The Regional Director of Tourism pointed out that the ‘Azores Windmills Trail Run’ event highlights the “most beautiful spaces” on Graciosa Island, one of UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserves, allowing “to explore some of its spectacular walking trails”.
Marlene Damião was speaking in Santa Cruz da Graciosa, at the start of this race, with approximately 40 kilometers long, which simultaneously hosts the Final of the Portuguese Trail Running Cup, with athletes from various parts of the country.
The Regional Director pointed out “the first edition of another major sports event with the brand Azores Trail Run, to join others that already take place on the islands of Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Santa Maria, Flores and Corvo which in recent years have taken the name of the Azores farther”.
Marlene Damião highlighted the organization of this “great event” the Azorean trail run, promoted by the Independent Athletics Club Blue Island, (Clube Independente de Atletismo Ilha Azul) ” for the challenge of bringing, at this time of year, about a hundred and fifty people” to Graciosa, “with direct impact to the local economy”, while “giving the opportunity to expose all the best we can offer to the nature lovers”
“The Regional Government has committed to holding major events like this as a way to increase the reputation of the Azores abroad as a nature destination,” said the Regional Director, adding that its international dimension generates “a great media exposure” of the region.

“Over the years with the number of events increasing, in this and in other sports, along with its international projection, we are more convinced than ever that this has been effectively a successful venture”, she reinforced, adding that “one of the best examples of this winning commitment is undoubtedly the events with the Azores Trail Run brand”.
“Year after year, the success of previous editions has reflected in gradual increases in the number of participants and nationalities in the multiple races, which is revealing in terms of image already achieved in a six-year space, and very promising in terms of the future, since that image has been strengthened with the continuity of the several events and with the expansion to the various islands,” said Marlene Damião.

Santa Cruz da Graciosa , 24 de Novembro de 2019 – A Diretora Regional do Turismo salientou que a prova ‘Azores Windmills Trail Run’ evidencia os “mais belos espaços” da ilha Graciosa, uma das Reservas da Biosfera da UNESCO, permitindo “explorar alguns dos seus espetaculares trilhos pedestres”.
Marlene Damião falava, em Santa Cruz da Graciosa, na partida desta prova, com aproximadamente 40 quilómetros de extensão, que acolhe, simultaneamente, a Final da Taça de Portugal de Trail Running, contando com atletas oriundos de várias partes do país.
A Diretora Regional sublinhou “a primeira edição de mais um grande evento desportivo com a marca Azores Trail Run, a juntar aos outros que já se realizam nas ilhas do Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Santa Maria, Flores e Corvo e que, nos últimos anos, têm levado o nome dos Açores mais longe”.
Marlene Damião realçou a organização deste “grande evento” açoriano de trail run, promovido pelo Clube Independente de Atletismo Ilha Azul, “pelo desafio que é trazer, nesta altura do ano, cerca de uma centena e meia de pessoas” à Graciosa, “com impacto direto na economia local”, ao mesmo tempo que “dá a oportunidade de mostrar aquilo que de melhor temos para oferecer aos amantes da natureza”.
“O Governo Regional apostou na realização de grandes eventos como este como forma de aumentar a notoriedade dos Açores no exterior como destino de natureza”, frisou a Diretora Regional, acrescentando que a sua dimensão internacional gera “uma grande exposição mediática” da Região.

“De ano para ano, o sucesso das edições anteriores tem-se refletido em aumentos graduais do número de participantes e nacionalidades nas várias provas, o que é revelador em termos de imagem já conquistada num espaço de seis anos, e muito animador em termos de futuro, uma vez que essa imagem tem vindo a ser reforçada com a continuidade dos vários eventos e com a expansão a várias ilhas”, afirmou Marlene Damião.
