Ponta Delgada, Azores, Feb 17, 2022 (Lusa) – The fire on the merchant ship “Felicity Ace,” whose 22 crew members were safely rescued Wednesday, “has progressed” and “is consuming various sectors” of the ship that “remains stable,” off Faial, Azores, the maritime authority said today.

“From yesterday to today, the ship maintains the same stability. There is a fire on board. It has progressed roughly from half a ship to the bridge and is consuming various sectors of the ship,” explained the captain of the Port of Horta, João Mendes Cabeças.

The merchant ship, which transported cars, issued an alert on Wednesday morning for having “active fire in the cargo hold.

The “Felicity Ace”, flying the flag of Panama, was sailing 90 nautical miles (about 170 km) southwest of the island of Faial, Azores when the alert was given.

Mendes Cabeças told Lusa that “there is currently no risk of fuel spillage” and ” there was no recorded source of pollution for now,” adding that the ship has onboard “diesel and oil.

As for the fire onboard the “Felicity Ace”, he admitted it is “difficult to extinguish” in the current situation.

“We never know how the fire will progress. If it might reach the fuel tanks. But for now, right now our biggest concern is navigational safety, because we have an unmanned ship with no crew on board. And the second problem will be to think about how to tow it away,” he stressed.

The ship “is in the middle of the sea and has a very large superstructure, so it is difficult to combat,” explained the captain of the Port of Horta.

The ocean patrol vessel “NRP Setúbal”, of the Portuguese Navy, remains on-site to monitor the situation, not being visible, so far, any trace of pollution in the area, according to information from the Navy today in a statement.

Progrediu incêndio em navio mercante ao largo do Faial

Ponta Delgada, Açores, 17 fev 2022 (Lusa) – O incêndio no navio mercante “Felicity Ace”, cujos 22 tripulantes foram resgatados na quarta-feira em segurança, “progrediu” e “está a consumir vários setores” do barco que “permanece estável”, ao largo do Faial, nos Açores, disse hoje a autoridade marítima.

“De ontem para hoje, o navio mantém a mesma estabilidade. Há um incêndio a bordo. Progrediu sensivelmente de meio navio até à ponte e está a consumir vários setores do navio”, explicou o capitão do Porto da Horta, João Mendes Cabeças.

O navio mercante, que transportava automóveis, emitiu na manhã de quarta-feira um alerta por ter “fogo ativo no porão de carga”.

O “Felicity Ace”, com bandeira do Panamá, navegava a 90 milhas náuticas (cerca de 170 km) a sudoeste da ilha do Faial, nos Açores, quando foi dado o alerta.

Mendes Cabeças adiantou à Lusa que “não há neste momento risco de derrame de combustível” e “não foi registado qualquer foco de poluição para já”, acrescentando que o navio tem a bordo “diesel e óleos”.

Quanto ao incêndio a bordo do “Felicity Ace”, admitiu ser “difícil de extinguir” na atual situação.

“Nunca sabemos como o incêndio vai progredir. Se poderá atingir os tanques de combustível. Mas, para já, neste momento a nossa maior preocupação é a segurança da navegação, porque temos um navio desgovernado e sem tripulantes a bordo. E o segundo problema será pensarmos na forma de o rebocar”, salientou.

O navio “está no meio do mar e tem uma superestrutura muito grande, pelo que é difícil o combate”, explicou ainda o capitão do Porto da Horta.

O navio patrulha oceânico “NRP Setúbal”, da Marinha Portuguesa, permanece no local a acompanhar a situação, não sendo visíveis, até ao momento, quaisquer vestígios de poluição na área, segundo informa hoje a Marinha em comunicado.
