Lisbon, Jan 31, 2023 (Lusa) – The emigrant Paulo Rodrigues Ferreira, living in the United States, is the winner of the fourth edition of the National Press/Ferreira de Castro Award, with the novel “Nobody returns to what they left behind”.
Nobody returns to what they left behind” is the winning work of the 4th edition of this award aimed at Portuguese living abroad and Lusodescendants,” reads a statement sent to Lusa, about the annual award given by Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, within the scope of cultural actions with the Portuguese communities.
The work was selected from among more than 60 applications from 14 countries, which, according to the organizers, “represents a solid adhesion and interest in this award, expressed not only in numbers but also in the quality of the works received.
The jury was composed by Luís Filipe de Castro Mendes (who presided), the editor-in-chief of Imprensa Nacional, Paula Mendes, and Professor Martina Matozzi, from Coimbra University, who classified the novel as “a narrative that maintains the tension of the writing from the first to the last page” and that is “coherent in its attitude and considers, with an original look and a captivating voice, the contemporary”.
Paulo Rodrigues Ferreira, who competed for the award under the pseudonym Penélope Rodrigues, was born in 1984 in Torres Vedras and has a PhD in Contemporary History. He is currently a Portuguese lecturer at the University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill, where he teaches Lusophone Language and Literature.
Besides the five thousand euro prize, the writer should see his work published later this year by the Portuguese public publishing house, Imprensa Nacional.

Lisboa, 31 jan 2023 (Lusa) – O emigrante Paulo Rodrigues Ferreira, a residir nos Estados Unidos da América, é o vencedor da quarta edição do Prémio Imprensa Nacional/Ferreira de Castro, com o romance “Ninguém volta ao que deixou”.
“‘Ninguém volta ao que deixou’ é a obra galardoada da 4.ª edição deste prémio dirigido a portugueses residentes no estrangeiro e a lusodescendentes”, lê-se num comunicado enviado à Lusa, sobre o prémio anual atribuído pela Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda em parceria com o Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros, no âmbito das ações culturais junto das comunidades portuguesas.
A obra foi selecionada de entre mais de 60 candidaturas provenientes de 14 países, o que, para os organizadores, “representa uma sólida adesão e interesse neste galardão, expressos não só nos números, mas também na qualidade dos trabalhos rececionados”.
O júri foi composto por Luís Filipe de Castro Mendes (que presidiu), pela editora-chefe da Imprensa Nacional, Paula Mendes, e pela professora Martina Matozzi, da Universidade de Coimbra, que classificaram o romance como “uma narrativa que mantém a tensão da escrita da primeira à última página” e que é “coerente na sua atitude e considera, com um olhar original e uma voz cativante, o contemporâneo”.
Paulo Rodrigues Ferreira, que concorreu ao prémio com o pseudónimo Penélope Rodrigues, nasceu em 1984, em Torres Vedras, e doutorou-se em História Contemporânea. É atualmente leitor de português na Universidade da Carolina do Norte, em Chapel Hill, onde ensina Língua e Literatura Lusófona.
Além do prémio de cinco mil euros, o escritor deverá ver, ainda este ano, a publicação do seu trabalho pela editora pública portuguesa, a Imprensa Nacional.
O galardão tem uma periodicidade anual e distingue trabalhos inéditos nas áreas de ficção e poesia, produzidos por portugueses a residir no estrangeiro e por lusodescendentes a residir no estrangeiro, conclui-se na nota.
