The number of people displaced in the Azores due to the passage of hurricane “Lorenzo” has increased to 39 and the number of occurrences to 127, the Regional Civil Protection said on Wednesday. 

Hurricane “Lorenzo” caused more than 170 occurrences this early morning in the Azores and forced the resettlement of more than 50 people, revealed early afternoon the Regional Government.

“In terms of occurrences, 171, of which we have 66 in Faial, 23 in Flores, 28 in Pico, 21 in São Jorge, eight in Graciosa, 20 in Terceira, two in São Miguel and three in Corvo”, said, in a statement to journalists, the regional secretary of Health of the Azores, who is responsible for the Civil Protection, Teresa Machado Luciano.

According to the regional secretary, it was necessary to relocate 53 people on three islands: “4 in São Jorge, 42 in Faial, and 7 in Flores.

This morning was also considered the possibility of withdrawing a hundred people in Lajes do Pico, as a precaution, but after all there were only 50.

All the people were relocated in family homes or in solutions found by the Regional Direction of Housing and the Regional Secretariat of Social Solidarity.

Among the occurrences, the most common were “tree falls, floods, destroyed roads and coastal climbing”, but it is the damage to the Port of Lajes das Flores, the only commercial port on the island, that justifies most concern of the Azorean government.

“The most serious, and very complicated, occurrence is the pier protection of the Port of Lajes das Flores, which was totally destroyed,” said Teresa Machado Luciano.

The warning regarding the wind gusts on the western and central group of islands has already dropped to yellow (the third most serious), but the maritime unrest remains under orange warning (the second most serious of the scale), until 15:00 local time (16:00 in Lisbon).

In this sense, the Regional Service of Civil Protection and Firefighters of the Azores will remain “on alert” until a new assessment is made with the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

The maximum wind gust recorded by IPMA was 163 km / h, at 08:25, in Corvo.

Açores/Mau Tempo: Furacão “Lorenzo” provoca 171 ocorrências e 53 desalojados

Angra do Heroísmo, Açores, 02 out 2019 (Lusa) – O furacão “Lorenzo” provocou mais de 170 ocorrências esta madrugada e manhã nos Açores e obrigou ao realojamento de mais de 50 pessoas, revelou ao início da tarde o Governo Regional.

“Em termos de ocorrências, 171, sendo que temos 66 no Faial, 23 nas Flores, 28 no Pico, 21 em São Jorge, oito na Graciosa, 20 na Terceira, duas em São Miguel e três no Corvo”, adiantou, em declarações aos jornalistas, a secretária regional da Saúde dos Açores, que tutela a Proteção Civil, Teresa Machado Luciano.

Segundo a governante, foi necessário realojar 53 pessoas em três ilhas: “quatro em São Jorge, 42 no Faial e sete nas Flores”. 

Esta manhã foi ainda equacionada a possibilidade de se retirar uma centena de pessoas nas Lajes do Pico, por precaução, mas afinal foram apenas 50.

Todas as pessoas foram realojadas em casas de familiares ou em soluções encontradas pela Direção Regional da Habitação e pela Secretaria Regional da Solidariedade Social. 

Entre as ocorrências, as mais comuns foram “quedas de árvores, inundações, vias destruídas e galgamentos costeiros”, mas são os prejuízos no Porto das Lajes das Flores, o único porto comercial da ilha, que merecem maior preocupação do executivo açoriano.

“A ocorrência mais grave, muito complicada, é a questão do molhe de proteção do Porto das Lajes das Flores, que ficou totalmente destruído”, frisou Teresa Machado Luciano. 

O aviso relativo às rajadas de vento nas ilhas dos grupos ocidental e central já baixou para amarelo (o terceiro mais grave), mas a agitação marítima mantém-se sob aviso laranja (o segundo mais grave da escala), até às 15:00 locais (16:00 em Lisboa).

Nesse sentido, o Serviço Regional de Proteção Civil e Bombeiros dos Açores vai continuar “em alerta” até ser feita uma nova avaliação com o Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA). 

A rajada de vento máxima registada pelo IPMA foi de 163 km/h, às 08:25, no Corvo.
