The Portuguese movie “Mother Knows Best” (A Mãe É Que Sabe) will be shown at the Whaling Museum in New Bedford, on October 18th, at 6:30 PM.

The movie is a family comedy with parallel universes and soccer fanatics, in a fun portrait of Portugal from the 70’s to our days. A typical birthday lunch breaks out when Ana Luísa begins to remember caricature episodes from her childhood and adolescence. Between carrot soups, trips to the beach, mother’s advice, dating, and weddings, she thinks of things that might have changed in her past. But those memories will have unbelievable effects.

Synopsis: The family of Ana Luisa meets at home to celebrate her father’s birthday. As the guests sit around the table, they will share memories of the past, in which all have a common denominator: the late Josefa, Ana Luisa’s mother. Hearing the stories, Ana Luisa realizes the impact that his late mother had on their life choices and imagines what would have happened if she had followed other paths, taken other options and said what was unsaid. At the same time, an event of unknown origin causes a change in space and time, enabling people all over the world the access to parallel universes. Ana Luisa will thus have the opportunity to change the past…

The comedy was produced by Ukbar Filmes in 2016.  Directed by Nuno Rocha have the participation of Maria João Abreu, Joana Pais de Brito, Filipa Ariosa, Filipe Vargas, Adriano Carvalho, Manuel Cavaco, Dalila Carmo, and many others.

The movie has subtitles in English and audio in Portuguese. The event is free and it’s sponsored by Camões Institute, Consulate of Portugal In New Bedford, and the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

No dia 18 de outubro será exibido o filme português “A Mãe é que Sabe” no Museu da Baleação, em New Bedford, às 18:30 horas.

Um típico almoço de aniversário dá para o torto quando Ana Luísa se começa a lembrar de episódios caricatos da sua infância e adolescência. Entre sopas de cenoura, idas à praia, conselhos de mãe, namoros e casamentos, ela pensa nas coisas que podia ter mudado no seu passado. Mas estas recordações vão ter efeitos inacreditáveis. Esta é uma comédia familiar com universos paralelos e fanáticos de futebol, num divertido retrato do Portugal dos anos 70 aos nossos dias.
