“The Death of Carlos Gardel” (2011) by director Solveig Nordlund, is the chosen Portuguese film for the 21st edition of the Ibero-American Film Festival in Boston. The screening date will be Friday, November 4, 2016, by 6:00 pm at TUFTS University, Olin Center, Room 012, 180 Packard Avenue, Medford, MA.
This year the Festival started on November 2nd, and it will screen films from the participating countries until November 18th. The Festival is an annual showcase of contemporary films from Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula with consular representation in Boston. The Portuguese screening counts with the support of Camões, IP, in close collaboration with the Portuguese Education Office and the Consulate General of Portugal in Boston.
The film is inspired by the work of the writer António Lobo Antunes and counts with the participation of Albano Jerónimo, Carla Maciel, Joana de Verona, Rui Morrison and Ruy de Carvalho, in the cast of actors. The story of Nuno, a young drug addict in a coma, dying in a hospital. During the two days between life and death, each of the relatives evokes with him a web of memories of the past, through which we perceive the gift of Nuno. Alvaro and Claudia, divorced parents and their new dysfunctional relationships, Graça, the medical aunt who will never have children because she lives with Cristiana, they all feel guilty for the state of Nuno, for the discouragement of life, but also for the dreams they have created. His father, Alvaro, in love with tango, refuses to accept Nuno’s death, letting himself to be carried away in a spiral of delirium and confusing an imitator with his favorite Argentinean tango singer Carlos Gardel.
The Festival is open to the public, and the admission is free.
