On New Year’s Eve, sometime before midnight, a couple with two children entered the Mrs. Potato Restaurant in Orlando, Florida. Thanks to Flaviane Carvalho, an employee, help came at the right time!
When the server approached the table to take the order for food the parents didn’t order food for one of the children, an 11-year-old boy.
The boy, seated alone on one side of the table, looked very skinny and had noticeable bruises on his face.
Feeling the boy could be in a problematic situation, Flaviane Carvalho wrote, in large letters, on a piece of paper “ARE YOU OK?”
She then stood behind the parents back and held up the sign for the boy to read it. He nodded.
Then, she wrote again: “DO YOU NEED HELP?” and the boy once again nodded in the affirmative.
She quickly dialed 911 and the police showed up shortly after.
Questioned about the bruises, the boy said that the ones on his face took place when he fell out of his bed and the one on his arm happened when he was wrestling with his stepfather.
Taken to the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital it became clear that the boy had extensive injuries according to the information furnished by Detective Erin Lawler do the Orlando Police Department.
The boy was approximately 20 pounds underweight. Lawler referred to the injuries as “Torture”.
The boy also told authorities that, as punishment, he had to hang by his ankles on a door.
The detectives also determined that the boy was, on several occasions, forced to excessive exercise, beaten with a wooden broom, back scratcher or with closed fists, among other atrocities.
The boy explained to the detectives that the abuse started around Christmas, but the detectives suspect, based on their investigation, that it was more prolonged.
The stepfather, 34 year old Timothy Wilson II, arrested that night faces multiple charges of abuse and neglect of a minor.
Lawler said that he has no prior history of violent crime. The mother,
Kristen Swann, 31 years of age and also at the restaurant, confessed to knowing about the abusive actions and not seeking medical assistance for her son.
Kristen was arrested on January 6th and is facing charges of neglect of a minor.
The boy’s four-year old sister did not appear to have suffered any abuse.
The Florida Department of Children and Families removed both children from their home.
“This child was destined to be killed,” commented Orlando Rolón, Orlando police chief describing the abuse suffered by the boy as horrific.

AJUDA NA HORA CERTA
Na noite de ano novo, pouco antes da meia-noite, um casal com duas crianças entrou no restaurante
Mrs. Potato em Orlando, na Florida.
A gerente do restaurante foi atender e tomou nota dos pratos encomendados naquela mesa.
Poucos instantes depois notou que nada tinha sido encomendado para o rapaz de 11 anos, o único que estava sentado na cadeira fazendo frente à empregada que notou
também algumas nódoas negras na cara do rapaz.
Pressentindo séria a situação da criança, Flaviane Carvalho escreveu em letra grande numa folha de papel e mostrou-lhe: “ESTÁS BEM?”
O rapaz acenou negativamente com a cabeça. Então, certa de
possível problema grave, ela escreveu novamente no papel: “PRECISAS DE AJUDA? SIM.” E o rapaz acenou que sim com a cabeça.
Sem perder tempo, ela ligou para a polícia que acorreu ao local.
Questionado sobre os hematomas, o rapaz disse que as marcas na cara foram resultado de ter caído da cama, e que os ferimentos no braço ocorreram quando estava praticando luta livre com o padrasto.
As autoridades levaram a criança ao Hospital de Crianças Arnold Palmer, onde ficou plenamente claro que os ferimentos tinham sido mais extensos, conforme relatado pelo Detetive Erin Lawler do Departamento Policial de Orlando.
O rapaz estava muito magro e Lawler denominou os ferimentos de “Tortura”. O rapaz relatou às autoridades que tinha sido amarrado pelos tornozelos e dependurado de cabeça para baixo numa porta.
Os detetives descobriram que amiudadas vezes não lhe davam alimentos e fora obrigado a fazer exercícios excessivos.
Ele disse ainda que foi espancado com o cabo de uma vassoura, e objeto de murros, entre outras atrocidades.
Ele disse ainda aos detetives que o abuso iniciou pelo Natal, mas os detetives suspeitam, baseado nas investigações, que já perduram de longa data.
O padrasto, Timothy Wilson II, de 34 anos, foi apreendido nessa noite é acusado de abuso de menor, e abandono, conforme documentos judiciais. Lawler disse que Wilson não tem antecedentes policiais.
A mãe da criança, Kristen Swann, de 31 anos de idade, também presente no restaurante confessou ter conhecimento das ações abusivas mas não procurou assistência médica para o filho. Ela foi apreendida
a 6 de Janeiro e acusada de abandono.
A irmã do menino de 4 anos de idade não mostrou vestígios de abuso. Ambas as crianças foram retiradas da família e estão sobe a custódia do Departamento de Crianças e Famílias da Florida.
“Essa criança estava destinada a ser morta,” comentou Orlando Rolón, chefe da polícia de Orlando descrevendo os maus tratos partilhados pelo rapaz ás autoridades como horrível.
