Dr. Edward Leitão Memorial Scholarship Fund to Award Scholarships to 5 Portuguese-Americans Pursuing Health Careers

The Dr. Edward Leitão Memorial Scholarship Fund will award five scholarships totaling $7,500 to Portuguese-American students Tatiana Abrantes, Nathan Pacheco, Tristan Correia, Julia Terra-Salomão and Raquel da Costa, according to Dr. Helena Santos-Martins, Co-Founder and Chair of the Dr. Leitão Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee. The scholarships will be presented at an Awards and Fundraising Luncheon on January 26, 2020, at 1 PM at Filarmónica de Stº António Cultural Center, on 575 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA. 

“This is a special year as we will be celebrating our 5^th anniversary. We are thrilled with the number and excellence of our scholarship applicants,“ reported Dr. Santos-Martins. “The decision process was difficult, but it highlights the immense achievements and potential of our Portuguese-American students. We are counting on the support of our communities to enable us to continue expanding the Dr. Edward Leitão Memorial Scholarship Fund. We also strongly encourage the applicants not awarded scholarships to reapply in the future and to continue being in contact with us as we are available for mentoring and to help with networking,” emphasized the physician.

Tatiana Abrantes is a first-year medical student at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and she is the daughter of immigrants from the Aveiro region in continental Portugal who reside in the Cranston area of Rhode Island. “As a first-year medical student, I am not yet sure what type of medical specialty I will want to pursue, however, I am confident that I will be heavily involved in empowering immigrants to ask questions and find consolation in their physicians,” said Abrantes

Nathan Pacheco, a second-generation Portuguese-American raised in Fall River, Massachusetts, is a senior nursing honors student in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at UMass Dartmouth. “I’ve committed myself to continue my education and pursuing medical school. My aspirations to transition from nurse to physician stem from an experience I had shadowing a doctor in my area, Dr. Andrade, who is a Portuguese internist in Fall River. The community requires more Portuguese students to enter medicine and rectify their underrepresentation in the field,“ said the student. 

Tristan Correia is a freshman at Fairfield University in Connecticut, where he is majoring in  Biology with a concentration in Health and Human Biology, and minoring in Health Sciences. He is a first-generation Portuguese-American from Azorean parents with residence in Dracut, Massachusetts and active within the Portuguese community of Lowell, MA. “ For as long as I can remember, my life-long dream is to become a doctor. An event that fortified my decision of becoming a doctor happened on January 22, 2016. My father passed away unexpectedly of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. I was only 14 years old. By becoming a doctor, I hope to prevent other families from suffering a tragic loss like I have experienced,” said Correia.

Julia Terra-Salomão is a distinguished senior with highest honors at Hudson High School, and she will participate in the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad later this month. She is a first-generation Portuguese-American with family roots from both continental Portugal and the Azores. “At the end of the year, I’m on track to receive my certification to medically interpret. In the immediate future, I see myself medically interpreting while continuing to study Portuguese in college. Providing accurate medical information is essential, and language barriers should not prevent Portuguese people from being able to get medical treatment,” mentioned Terra-Salomão.

Raquel da Costa is a junior with highest honors at Bishop Tang High School in Marion, Massachusetts. She is a first-generation Portuguese-American with maternal family origins from the region of Aveiro in continental Portugal. “ I plan to take the pre-med track in the college that I attend. I would love to specialize in Dermatology. Living in the Southcoast (of MA) has empowered me to be an asset to the Portuguese community through medicine,“ stated da Costa.

O Dr. Edward Leitão Memorial Scholarship Fund vai atribuir cinco bolsas de estudo num total de $7.500 aos estudantes luso-americanos Tatiana Abrantes, Nathan Pacheco, Tristan Correia, Julia Terra-Salomão e Raquel da Costa, de acordo com a Dra. As bolsas de estudo serão apresentadas no Almoço Anual de Angariação de Fundos e Atribuição de Bolsas de Estudo no dia 26 de Janeiro de 2020, às 13 horas no Centro Cultural Filarmónica de Stº António, 575 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA. 

“Este é um ano muito especial, pois vamos comemorar o nosso 5º aniversário. Estamos bastante entusiasmados com o número e a excelência dos candidatos às nossas bolsas de estudo”, informou a Dra. Tatiana Abrantes é uma estudante de Medicina do primeiro ano em The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University e é filha de imigrantes da região de Aveiro em Portugal continental que residem na zona de Cranston em Rhode Island. “Como estudante do primeiro ano de Medicina, ainda não tenho a certeza do tipo de especialidade médica que vou querer seguir, no entanto estou confiante de que vou estar fortemente envolvida em incentivar os imigrantes a fazerem perguntas e a encontrarem conforto nos seus médicos”, disse Abrantes.

Nathan Pacheco, um luso-americano de segunda geração criado em Fall River, Massachusetts, é um estudante da lista de honra, finalista do curso de enfermagem no  College of Nursing and Health Sciences at UMass Dartmouth. “Comprometi-me a continuar a minha educação e a seguir os meus estudos na faculdade de Medicina. As minhas aspirações à transição de enfermeiro para médico resultam de uma experiência que tive na observação de um médico na minha área, o Dr. Andrade, que é um internista português em Fall River. A comunidade necessita de mais estudantes portugueses a seguir Medicina e assim corrigir a sua sub-representação nesta área”, disse o estudante. 

Tristan Correia é estudante do primeiro ano na Fairfield University em Connecticut, com major em Biologia, com concentração em Saúde e Biologia Humana e com minor em Ciências da Saúde. Ele é um luso-americano de primeira geração de pais açorianos com residência em Dracut, Massachusetts, e activo na comunidade portuguesa de Lowell, MA. “Desde que me lembro, o sonho da minha vida é ser médico. Um evento que reafirmou a minha decisão de me tornar médico aconteceu no dia 22 de Janeiro de 2016. O meu pai faleceu inesperadamente de doença cardiovascular arteriosclerótica. Eu tinha apenas 14 anos de idade. Ao me tornar médico, espero poder evitar que outras famílias sofram uma perda trágica como eu sofri”, disse Correia.

Julia Terra-Salomão é uma finalista de liceu distinguida com as mais altas honras na Hudson High School e irá participar na Olimpíada Norte-Americana de Linguística Computacional este mês. Ela é uma luso-americana de primeira geração com raízes familiares tanto de Portugal continental como dos Açores. “No final do ano, irei receber a minha certificação como intérprete médica. No futuro imediato, vejo-me como intérprete médica enquanto continuo a estudar Português na faculdade. Prestar informações médicas correctas é essencial, e as barreiras linguísticas não devem impedir que os portugueses possam obter tratamento médico”, mencionou Terra-Salomão.

Raquel da Costa é uma júnior de liceu com as mais altas honras na Bishop Tang High School em Marion, Massachusetts. Ela é uma luso-americana de primeira geração com origens familiares maternas da região de Aveiro, em Portugal continental. “Tenciono seguir Pré-Medicina no colégio que frequentarei. Gostaria de me especializar em Dermatologia. Viver na Costa Sul (de MA) encorajou-me a ser uma mais-valia para a comunidade portuguesa através da Medicina”, afirmou da Costa.
