The Azorean Maritime Heritage Society (AMHS) is a nonprofit organization located in New Bedford, Massachusetts was created to promote the Azorean culture and the whaling heritage by raising awareness and pride within New England’s Azorean-American community and recognizing the rich maritime heritage commonly shared for longer than a century between the Whaling City of New Bedford and the Archipelago of the Azores.
The Society maintains three authentic Azorean whaleboats — Pico, Faial, and Bela Vista — which were built in the post-whaling era using traditional techniques and used for cultural, historical, and recreational events.
Currently, there are less than 70 Azorean whaleboats in the world; these
are the only ones in the United States.
The Society holds International Azorean Whaleboat Regatta, a major event and attraction alternating every other year between New Bedford and the Azores.
The spectacle attracts many spectators and wooden boat enthusiasts, civic leaders, and dignitaries from the U.S., Azores, and mainland Portugal.
The week of the Regatta is packed with activities from whaleboat rowing and sailing races to cultural presentations, lectures, and social events.
The New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Society have been staunch partners since the Society’s founding in 1997 and have worked together to promote Portuguese maritime history and culture in the community.
Every year, the Society awards scholarships to six adolescents. This year the awards totaled $8,000.00 and the ceremony was held at Pope’s Island Park, where the statue of Prince Henry the Navigator is located.
The reason for the choice was to maintain social distancing, while
recognizing deserving youngsters.
Barbara Traban is the chairman of the Scholarship Committee. “We had 65 applicants—they were all great students—hard to pick,” said Traban.
The current president, Paul Curado, has been very active in the organization, while teaching by example his son Cameron, one of the recipients.
Cameron Curado has been involved in the activities from volunteering at events to assisting with the support boat. He has a passion for culinary and will be attending Johnson & Wales University in the Fall.
“It’s been a tough year for the Club … but, we did have our scholarship dinner,” explained the President. “I love the people that are part of the organization … the members are like my extended family, really,” he concluded.

Christina Eckenreiter, who readily shared with us that she was adopted at the tender age of 13 months. “I was adopted into a wonderful American-Portuguese-German family and I grew up with 3 siblings, all biological to Sandra and Winfred Eckenreiter,” she said smiling.
Jillian Aguiar will be departing for Sacred Heart University in Virginia with Biology as her chosen major. She aspires to become a Pre-Physician Assistant/Nursing.
Phoenix Carreiro readily announced her Azorean heritage. “It’s very exciting [getting the scholarship]because my grandpa was from the Azores and he was a fisherman, so I am really proud,” she offered after getting her scholarship. Business major is her choice of studies at Babson College where she will start next Spring.
Gwendolyn Baptista has been acquainted with the Society for years, as her father, Paulo Baptista, has been involved for years. She chose UMass Amherst as she has interests in various fields. “They have a program where you can make your own major, so I am going to be doing Graphic Design, Marketing and I think they have a Fashion program, as I love to sew,” she
explained including her interest in American Sign Language, too.
Savanah Laroche, chose to study Nursing at UMass Dartmouth. “I like diversing in different cultures, and I am Portuguese,” she declared. Her Dad is of French descent, and Mom’s ancestors hail from the Azores.
The Society looks forward to another great celebration in 2021, as another year of regattas in New Bedford and all the traditional activities are being planned.

A Azorean Maritime Heritage Society (AMHS) é uma organização sem fins lucrativos localizada em New Bedford, Massachusetts e foi criada para promover a cultura e herança baleeira dos Açores desenvolvendo os conhecimentos e orgulho dentro da comunidade Açoreana da Nova
Inglaterra e reconhecendo a herança marítima rica partilhada durante mais de um século entre a cidade baleeira de New Bedford e o Arquipélago dos Açores.
A Sociedade abraça todas as culturas e etnias e foi fundada pela Dra. Mary Vermette, docente Luso-Americana que muito honrava a sua cultura Portuguesa herdada.
A Sociedade mantém três botes baleeiros Açorianos autênticos — Pico, Faial, e Bela Vista – os quais foram construídos após a era baleeira usando técnicas tradicionais e usados para eventos culturais, históricos e de
recreio.
Presentemente, existem menos de 70 botes baleeiros Açorianos no mundo, sendo estes três os únicos nos Estados Unidos.
A Sociedade é anfitriã da Regata Internacional de Botes Baleeiros Açorianos, um grande evento e atração alternando de dois em dois anos entre New Bedford e os Açores.
O espetáculo atrai muitos forasteiros entusiastas de botes de madeira, líderes civis, e dignitários dos Estados Unidos, Açores e de Portugal continental.
A semana da Regata é preenchida de atividades desde
corridas a remo e vela a apresentações culturais, palestras, e eventos sociais.
O Museu da Baleia de New Bedford e a Sociedade são parceiros desde a fundação da Sociedade em 1997 e têm promovido juntos a história marítima Portuguesa e a cultura na comunidade.
Todos os anos, a Sociedade atribui bolsas de estudos a seis alunos. Este ano no montante de $8,000.00 e a cerimónia teve lugar no Pope’s Island Park, onde a estátua do Infante D. Henrique está localizada.
A razão para a escola do local foi para manter distância social, enquanto
reconhecendo adolescentes merecedores dos prémios.
Barbara Traban, é a presidente da Comissão de Bolsas de Estudo, “Tivemos 65 candidatos—eles foram todos ótimos alunos—difícil a escolha,” disse Traban. “Este foi um ano fora do comum devido ao vírus … então leva-nos [a comissão]cerca de 16-20 horas,” disse ela referindo-se à escolha final dos premiados.
O Presidente, Paul Curado, tem sido um membro muito ativo da organização, enquanto ensinando por exemplo o seu filho Cameron, um dos premiados. Cameron tem estado envolvido em atividades como auxiliando durante eventos a assistir no barco de apoio.
“Tem sido um ano difícil para o Clube …mas, tivemos o nosso jantar para angariar fundos para as bolsas de estudo,” explicou o Presidente.
“Eu adoro as pessoas que fazem parte da organização … os membros são como família para mim, realmente,” concluiu ele.

Phoenix Carreiro apresentou-se como sendo de origem Açoriana. “É muito empolgante [receber a bolsa de estudo]porque o meu avô era dos Açores e ele era pescador, por isso tenho muito orgulho,” disse ela depois de receber o prémio. Ela escolheu Negócios como foco de estudos no Babson College onde irá ingressar na Primavera.
Gwendolyn Baptista há muitos anos que conhece a Sociedade, porque o pai, Pauo Baptista, está lá envolvido. Ela escolheu frequentar a UMass Amherst porque está interessada em várias áreas de estudos. “Eles têm um programa onde nós podemos desenvolver a nossa própria área de estudos, então vou estudar Desenho Gráfico, Marketing e acho que também têm um programa de Moda, e eu adoro cozer,” explicou ela incluindo o seu interesse na Língua Gestual Americana, também.
Savanah Laroche, escolheu estudar Enfermagem na UMass Dartmouth. “Gosto das diferenças em várias culturas, e eu sou Portuguesa,” declarou ela. O pai é descendente de Franceses, e os antepassados maternos emigraram dos Açores.
A Sociedade disfrutará de outra grande celebração em 2021, porque será outro ano de regatas em New Bedford e todas as atividades tradicionais estão em fase de planeamento.
