The Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, begins on Saturday a visit to the Portuguese-American communities in California, the state with the largest community of Portuguese origin and where there is a strong desire to strengthen the connection to Portugal.
“It’s been a while since a President of Portugal visited California and spent so much time here, so I think the community, in general, is very excited about the visit,” Angela Simões, a Lusodescendant and former President of the Portuguese-American Leadership Council (PALCUS), told Lusa.
She stressed that there are two areas of great importance to the Portuguese community: teaching the Portuguese language and improving consular services, which need more support from the Portuguese authorities in this direction.
The largest state on the West Coast, with approximately 347,000 Luso-Americans, has communities concentrated in critical points that the President will visit. His itinerary includes San Diego, Artesia (near Los Angeles), San Jose, and San Francisco, with stops in the important communities of the central valley in Turlock and Gustine.
“I am very excited for the opportunity to meet the President and, if the room is not too crowded, to be able to exchange a few words with him,” told Lusa, the community leader Zachery Ramos, a member of the Gustine school board.
The village is very active in Portuguese traditions and has been well known for a long time for having one of the most significant Portuguese feasts in the United States.
The President will visit the G.P.S. Portuguese Hall of Gustine, which is one of about a hundred Portuguese halls throughout California that operate as hubs for several generations of Portuguese-Americans. They serve as points of support to keep the Portuguese heritage alive, celebrate cultural, gastronomic, and religious traditions, and organize “Festas” that attract thousands of people.
“I believe we have many Portuguese-Americans who are very interested in supporting both California’s and Portugal’s economy,” said Zachery Ramos. “This could be an opportunity for businesses and community leaders here in Gustine to hear the President’s vision and help make it a reality.”

California’s central valley has some of the largest concentrations of Portuguese-Americans in the state, mainly from the Azores. Here is where the Portuguese descendent congress members elected to the House of Representatives are working, Jim Costa for the 16th district and David Valadão for the 21st district. Many of these Portuguese-Americans are entrepreneurs in farming and dairy farming.
“I want to share some of the good things about our town and the importance of the economic partnership between our state and Portugal,” said Zachery Ramos. “I hope we can discuss ways to work together to boost both economies.”
Closer economic ties between California and Portugal have been a relevant theme recently, with several initiatives designed to foster investment.
In June, the Secretary of State for Internationalization, Bernardo Ivo Cruz, traveled to California and met with several technology companies in Silicon Valley to attract foreign investment to Portugal.
Shortly before, in May, a Portuguese delegation that had participated in the NAFSA 2022 education event visited several higher education institutions in California.
This is also on President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s itinerary on this visit, fulfilling his promise to the Portuguese communities made on the East Coast in 2018.
The Portuguese head of state has on his schedule a trip to Stanford University, where he will meet with President Marc Tessier-Lavigne, followed by a meeting with Portuguese entrepreneurs in San Francisco, where the community has links to technological and scientific activities.
Before that, he will have lunch with the San Diego community, participate in the Santos Populares party in Artesia, listen to folkloric ranches in Gustine, and have dinner with Luso-elected representatives in Turlock.
The agenda also includes the leadoff ball at a baseball game during the S.F. Giants’ Portuguese Heritage Night in San Francisco and the groundbreaking of a monument to the state’s Portuguese dairy farmers.
The visit ends on September 28, and he returns to Portugal the following day.

Marcelo visita comunidades na Califórnia sedentas de maior ligação a Portugal
O Presidente da República, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, inicia no sábado uma visita às comunidades luso-americanas da Califórnia, o estado com maior diáspora de origem portuguesa e onde há vontade de reforçar a ligação a Portugal.
“Faz algum tempo desde que um Presidente de Portugal veio à Califórnia e passou tanto tempo aqui, por isso penso que a comunidade, no geral, está muito entusiasmada com a visita”, disse à Lusa a lusodescendente Angela Simões, até há pouco tempo presidente do Conselho de Liderança Luso-americano (PALCUS).
A responsável sublinhou que há duas áreas de grande importância para a comunidade, nomeadamente o ensino da língua portuguesa e a melhoria dos serviços consulares, e a necessidade de mais apoios das autoridades portuguesas nesse sentido.
Com cerca de 347 mil luso-americanos, o maior estado da costa oeste tem comunidades concentradas em pontos-chave que o Presidente vai visitar no itinerário, que inclui San Diego, Artesia (perto de Los Angeles), São José e São Francisco, com passagens pelas importantes comunidades do vale central em Turlock e Gustine.
“Estou muito entusiasmado pela oportunidade de conhecer o Presidente e, se a sala não estiver muito cheia, poder trocar algumas palavras com ele”, disse à Lusa o líder comunitário Zachery Ramos, membro do conselho escolar de Gustine.
A vila é muito ativa nas tradições portuguesas e conhecida há bastante tempo por ter uma das maiores festas portuguesas dos Estados Unidos.
O G.P.S. Portuguese Hall of Gustine, que o Presidente vai visitar, é um de cerca de uma centena de salões portugueses, espalhados pela Califórnia, a funcionar como agregadores das várias gerações de luso-americanos. Servem como pontos de apoio, mantêm viva a herança portuguesa, celebram tradições culturais, gastronómicas e religiosas, e organizam “Festas” que atraem milhares de pessoas.
“Acredito que temos muitos luso-americanos deveras interessados em apoiar tanto a economia da Califórnia como a de Portugal”, afirmou Zachery Ramos. “Esta pode ser uma oportunidade para empresas e líderes comunitários aqui em Gustine ouvirem a visão do Presidente e ajudarem a torná-la realidade”.
O vale central da Califórnia tem algumas das maiores concentrações de luso-americanos do estado, em grande parte oriundos dos Açores. É aqui que trabalham os congressistas lusodescendentes eleitos para a Câmara dos Representantes, Jim Costa pelo 16.º distrito e David Valadão pelo 21.º distrito. Muitos destes luso-americanos são empresários em áreas como agropecuária e laticínios.
“Quero partilhar algumas das coisas boas da nossa vila e a importância da parceria económica entre o nosso Estado e Portugal”, referiu Zachery Ramos. “Espero que possamos falar de formas de trabalharmos juntos para impulsionarmos as duas economias”.
O estreitar dos laços económicos entre a Califórnia e Portugal tem sido um tema relevante nos últimos anos, com várias iniciativas desenhadas para fomentar investimentos.
Em junho, o secretário de Estado da Internacionalização, Bernardo Ivo Cruz, deslocou-se à Califórnia e reuniu-se com várias empresas tecnológicas em Silicon Valley, para atrair investimento estrangeiro para Portugal.
Pouco antes, em maio, uma comitiva portuguesa que tinha participado no evento de educação NAFSA 2022 visitou várias instituições de ensino superior na Califórnia.
Isso é algo que também consta do itinerário do Presidente Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa nesta visita, com a qual cumpre uma promessa que tinha feito às comunidades portuguesas da costa oeste em 2018.
O chefe de Estado português tem na agenda uma deslocação à Universidade de Stanford, onde se vai reunir com o presidente Marc Tessier-Lavigne, seguindo-se um encontro com empreendedores portugueses em São Francisco, onde a diáspora é mais ligada a atividades tecnológicas e científicas.
Antes disso, vai almoçar com a comunidade de São Diego, participar na festa dos Santos Populares em Artesia, ouvir ranchos folclóricos em Gustine e jantar com luso-eleitos em Turlock.
A agenda inclui ainda a bola de saída num jogo de beisebol, durante a Noite de Herança Portuguesa dos SF Giants em São Francisco e a primeira pedra de um monumento aos produtores de laticínios portugueses do Estado.
A visita termina a 28 de setembro, estando previsto o regresso a Portugal no dia seguinte.
