The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will visit the Portuguese immigrant communities in the US state of California, between San Diego and San Francisco, starting this Saturday, fulfilling a promise he made in 2018.
According to a note posted today on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic, during his visit to the West Coast of the United States of America, the head of state will pass through San Diego, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, including also the city of San Jose, and the San Joaquin Valley.
During this five-day visit, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will go to Stanford University in Palo Alto, “where there is a Portuguese scientific community,” and he will participate in the kick-off of the construction of a monument to honor Portuguese milk producers, the same note said.
The state of California is the US state with more Luso-Americans, currently with approximately 300,000 inhabitants of Portuguese origin.
In 2018, the President of the Republic, along with Prime Minister António Costa, celebrated June 10 in the US cities of Boston, Providence and New Bradford with Portuguese immigrants and Lusodescendants from the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
During a speech in Boston, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa promised to return soon to other Portuguese communities “who were very sad” for not being able to be visited on that occasion, such as the ones on the West Coast.
At the time, the Head of State had indicated that this visit would take place in November 2018, but it only ended up happening now.
Two weeks ago, the Portuguese Parliament unanimously approved this trip of the President of the Republic to California, with the dates September 23 to 29, which include the departure and return days to Portugal.

Marcelo cumpre promessa e visita Comunidades Portuguesas na Califórnia
O Presidente da República, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, vai visitar comunidades emigrantes portuguesas no estado norte-americano da Califórnia, entre São Diego e São Francisco, a partir de sábado, cumprindo uma promessa que fez em 2018.
De acordo com uma nota hoje divulgada no sítio oficial da Presidência da República na Internet, na Costa Oeste dos Estados Unidos da América o chefe de Estado passará por São Diego, Los Angeles, pela área da baía de São Francisco, incluindo também a cidade de São José, e pelo Vale de São Joaquim.
Durante esta visita de cinco dias, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa irá à Universidade de Stanford, em Palo Alto, “onde existe uma comunidade científica portuguesa”, e participará no lançamento da construção de um monumento de homenagem a produtores de leite portugueses, refere a mesma nota.
A Califórnia é o estado norte-americano com mais luso-americanos, atualmente com cerca de 300 mil habitantes de origem portuguesa.
Em 2018, o Presidente da República, juntamente com o primeiro-ministro, António Costa, celebrou o 10 de Junho nas cidades norte-americanas de Boston, Providence e New Bradford junto de emigrantes portugueses e lusodescendentes dos estados de Massachusetts e Rhode Island.
Numa intervenção em Boston, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa prometeu voltar em breve para estar outras comunidades portuguesas “que ficaram muito tristes” por não as visitar naquela ocasião, como as da Costa Oeste.
Na altura, o chefe de Estado apontou essa visita para novembro de 2018, mas acaba por apenas se concretizar agora.
Há duas semanas, o parlamento aprovou por unanimidade esta deslocação do Presidente da República à Califórnia, com as datas de 23 a 29 de setembro, que incluem os dias de ida e de regresso a Portugal.
