Lisbon, 26 fev 2022 (Lusa) – The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said today that “everything that is legitimate to do” regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine “the international community will do”, stressing that there are measures that take time to apply, such as sanctions.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was speaking to journalists in front of the Belem Palace in Lisbon, where he greeted the hundreds of people who gathered in the late afternoon today in solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

“I don’t want to go into details, but as you know, everything that can be considered to rethink the position of those who took the initiative to violate international law and to violate the fundamental principles of coexistence among peoples, everything that is legitimate to do, the international community will do,” he told reporters.

The President of the Republic recalled that this was the position “from the beginning” of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, “who was very strong, very clear, very determined and represented not only the European Union and its allies, but represented the overwhelming majority of states in the world that condemned” the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that international solidarity with Ukraine “has translated into a series of very harsh sanctions and penalties.”

“And you know how there is a concern, on the one hand, to maintain this firmness in the sanctions and, on the other hand, to go on helping – in the framework in which the European Union, the peoples of the European Union, are moving, helping in so many areas and the governments of the various countries are dealing with it – the Ukrainian people,” he said.

According to the Portuguese head of state, “the international community is acting, as has been public and notorious.”

“A lot of things are evident, other things take time to apply. The sanctions, even when they are instantaneous, nevertheless take a few days to take effect, but in addition, there is all the help that the countries of the European Union have provided,” he replied when confronted with the requests for help that Ukraine has made.

Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine early Thursday morning, with ground forces and shelling of targets in several cities, which has caused at least 198 deaths, including civilians, and more than 1,100 wounded, on Ukrainian territory, according to Kiev. The UN reported 150,000 displaced to Poland, Hungary, Moldova and Romania.

Ucrânia: “Tudo o que for legítimo fazer, a comunidade internacional fará” – Marcelo 

Lisboa, 26 fev 2022 (Lusa) – O Presidente da República, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, defendeu hoje que “tudo o que for legítimo fazer” quanto à invasão russa da Ucrânia “a comunidade internacional fará”, salientando que há medidas que demoram tempo a aplicar, como as sanções.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa falava aos jornalistas em frente ao Palácio de Belém, em Lisboa, onde saudou as centenas de pessoas que hoje se concentraram ao final da tarde em solidariedade com o povo ucraniano.

“Eu não queria entrar em pormenores, mas como sabem tudo o que seja possível considerar para fazer repensar a posição de quem tomou a iniciativa de violar o direito internacional e de violar princípios fundamentais da convivência entre os povos, tudo o que for legítimo fazer, a comunidade internacional fará”, respondeu aos jornalistas.

O Presidente da República recordou que esta foi a posição “desde o início” do secretário-geral da ONU, António Guterres, “que foi muito forte, muito claro, muito determinado e representava não apenas a União Europeia nem os aliados, mas representava a maioria esmagadora dos estados do mundo que condenou” a invasão da Ucrânia feita pela Rússia.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa referiu que a solidariedade internacional com a Ucrânia “têm-se traduzido numa série de sanções e sanções muito duras”.

“E sabem como há preocupação, por um lado, de manter essa firmeza nas sanções e, por outro lado, de ir ajudando – no quadro em que se move a União Europeia, os povos da União Europeia, ajudando em tantos domínios e os governos dos vários países estão a tratar disso – o povo ucraniano”, afirmou.

De acordo com o chefe de Estado português, “a comunidade internacional está a agir, como tem sido público e notório”.

“Muita coisa é evidente, outra coisa demora tempo a aplicar. As sanções, mesmo quando são instantâneas, apesar de tudo demoram uns dias a serem efetivadas, mas além disso há toda uma ajuda que os países da União Europeia têm proporcionado”, respondeu quando confrontado com os pedidos de ajuda que a Ucrânia tem feito.

A Rússia lançou na quinta-feira de madrugada uma ofensiva militar na Ucrânia, com forças terrestres e bombardeamento de alvos em várias cidades, que já provocaram pelo menos 198 mortos, incluindo civis, e mais de 1.100 feridos, em território ucraniano, segundo Kiev. A ONU deu conta de 150.000 deslocados para a Polónia, Hungria, Moldávia e Roménia.
