Macedo de Cavaleiros, Bragança, 11 feb 2022 (Lusa) – The streets of the village of Podence, in Trás-os-Montes, will have again the color and the noise of the caretos with the return of the traditional Entrudo Chocalheiro, elevated two years ago to the Património Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade, informed today the responsible ones.
The Carnival “more genuine Portugal”, as claimed this village in the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, Bragança district, has four days, with various activities, between February 26 and March 1, and the caretos loose and rattle the women, with rattles that bring the waist of colorful costumes, supported by sticks to the pranks and disguised with the typical iron masks.
“This year we also want to mark the beginning of the end of covid with the Carnival of the Caretos of Podence,” said to Lusa the president of the Association of Caretos of Podence, António Carneiro, noting that all activities will be made in the air and were planned according to the recommendations of the Directorate General of Health (DGS).
There will be no concerts, as was usual in the program of the festivities, but there are walks, off-road bicycle rides in a territory that is Geopark, boat rides on the Azibo Reservoir, street entertainment, exhibitions, a traditional market, and the experience of being a caretos and painting your own mask, among other activities.
The Caretos of Podence were elevated by UNESCO to Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, in December 2019, and also celebrated the Entrudo Chocalheiro of 2020 with a “sea of people” in the small village, joined by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
A few weeks later the new coronavirus arrived in Portugal and, in 2021, forced the Caretos of Podence to stay at the windows and balconies of the village to mark Entrudo, which this year takes to the streets again.
“It is very important because people, with the pandemic, need to be happy, to have a party, and I think it is important to get out of this gray time that were these two years of pandemic without having this kind of cultural events, “said Antonio Carneiro.
The “caretos” “guarantee the coloring, guarantee the joy” and call again the emigrants that have always returned to the country on this date to join the tradition and wear the traditional masked costumes.
“Many emigrants of Podence descent will come to associate themselves and it is a pride for them to also be present,” stressed the president of the association, who also expects many other visitors, even because the Entrudo coincides with other festivities, such as the almond blossom, in the south of the district.
The disclosure of the Entrudo Chocalheiro program coincided with a position taken by the Intermunicipal Community (CIM) Terras de Trás-os-Montes that continues to recommend not to hold events that bring together many people in this region.
In reaction to the position of the CIM, which also includes the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, the responsible for the Caretos party, António Carneiro, stressed that the Entrudo of Podence is all done outdoors and similar to other thematic events that take place in other municipalities.
“The Entrudo is a street party and, as there are fairs and other events, I think it is justified to hold this event with all the concerns that the DGS imposes in these situations”, he considered.
The most emblematic masked figures of Transmontana traditions have represented Portugal in international events with a presence in 10 countries and, in March, will present themselves at Expo Dubai.

Entrudo Chocalheiro Património da Humanidade volta a sair à rua em Trás-os-Montes
Macedo de Cavaleiros, Bragança, 11 fev 2022 (Lusa) – As ruas da aldeia transmontana de Podence voltam a ter o colorido e a algazarra dos caretos com o regresso do tradicional Entrudo Chocalheiro, elevado há dois anos a Património Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade, informaram hoje os responsáveis.
O Carnaval “mais genuíno de Portugal”, como reclama esta aldeia do concelho de Macedo de Cavaleiros, no distrito de Bragança, tem quatro dias, com várias atividades, entre 26 de fevereiro e 01 de março, e os caretos à solta e a chocalhar as mulheres, com os chocalhos que trazem à cintura dos coloridos fatos, amparados por paus para as tropelias e disfarçados com as típicas máscaras de ferro.
“Este ano também queremos marcar o início do fim da covid com o Carnaval dos caretos de Podence”, afirmou à Lusa o presidente da Associação dos Caretos de Podence, António Carneiro, vincando que todas as atividades vão ser feita ao ar e foram planeadas de acordo com as recomendações da Direção-Geral da Saúde (DGS).
Não haverá concertos, como era habitual no programa das festas, mas há caminhadas, passeios de bicicleta todo-o-terreno num território que é Geoparque, passeios de barco na albufeira do Azibo, animação de rua, exposições, mercado tradicional e as experiências de ser careto e pintar a própria máscara, entre outras atividades.
Os Caretos de Podence foram elevados, pela UNESCO, a Património Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade, em dezembro de 2019, e ainda festejaram o Entrudo Chocalheiro de 2020 com um “mar de gente” na pequena aldeia, a que se juntou o Presidente da República, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
Poucas semanas depois o novo coranovírus chegou a Portugal e, em 2021, obrigou os Caretos de Podence a ficaram às janelas e varandas da aldeia para assinalar o Entrudo, que este ano volta a sair à rua.
“É muito importante porque as pessoas, com a pandemia, têm necessidade de haver alegria, de haver festa, e acho que é importante sair deste tempo cinzento que foram estes dois anos de pandemia sem haver este tipo de manifestações culturais”, considerou António Carneiro.
Os caretos “garantem o colorido, garantem a alegria” e voltam a chamar os emigrantes que sempre regressaram à terra nesta data para se associarem à tradição e vestirem o fato dos tradicionais mascarados.
“Virão muitos emigrantes descendentes de Podence, que se vêm associar e é um orgulho para eles também estarem presentes”, salientou o presidente da associação, que espera também muitos outros visitantes, até porque o Entrudo coincide com outras festas, como a amendoeira em flor, no sul do distrito.
A divulgação do programa do Entrudo Chocalheiro coincidiu com uma tomada de posição da Comunidade Intermunicipal (CIM) Terras de Trás-os-Montes que continua a recomendar a não realização de eventos que juntem muitas pessoas nesta região.
Em reação à posição da CIM, da qual também faz parte o município de Macedo de Cavaleiros, o responsável pela festa dos Caretos, António Carneiro, vincou que o Entrudo de Podence é todo feito ao ar livre e semelhante a outros eventos temáticos que se realizam noutros municípios.
“O Entrudo é uma festa de rua e, como há feiras e outros eventos, acho que se justifica a realização deste evento com todas as preocupações que a DGS impõe nestas situações”, considerou.
Os mais emblemáticos mascarados das tradições transmontanas têm representado Portugal em eventos internacionais com presença em 10 países e, em março, vão apresentar-se na Expo Dubai.
