The saga of five Portuguese who, without practicing the sport, created a team and qualified in bobsled in less than a year for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary will give origin to a documentary film.
The information was given to Lusa news agency by the producer Diogo Machado, who was interested in the Portuguese-style story of the ‘desenrasca, insólita” of António Reis, João Poupada, Jorge Magalhães, João Pires and Rogério Bernardes, emigrants in Canada and former Olympic athletes in a sport that in Portugal is not practiced and is relatively unknown.
The five Portuguese, four of them students at the time and all athletes in other disciplines, aspired to be in the Olympic Games in the host country. After many adventures, they managed to compete wearing the Portuguese colors and using the Portuguese colors rented sleds.
The group ended up tearing up an inhospitable path in an expensive sport. From a mirage turned the dream into reality, a journey that caught the attention of the production company PawkPawkPawk, from Santo Tirso.
“We want to tell the epic journey of the hero who manages to overcome all adversities and reach his peak, in this case the Olympic Games. It is a message that it is possible to knock down obstacles and, together, achieve something greater, take an idea to the end,” anticipated, in statements to the Lusa agency, Diogo Machado, according to which the project is still “in an embryonic phase.

The fifth film of director Dinis Machado is in a development period until the end of 2022, for the “raising of funding, partnerships, construction of the base and production.” However, the producer guarantees that even if applications submitted for this purpose are not approved, “the film will be made” in partnership with teams in Canada.
Diogo Machado foresees that shooting will only begin at the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023 for the film to be released in 2024.
António Reis, one of the protagonists of the story, said that if someone told him what he did with his four colleagues as an idea for a film, “he would say it’s unreal.”
“It’s a story that transcends us, bigger than us, and we were proud to live it,” he stressed.
The marketing consultant and former political and advertising advisor said he was “overjoyed” to hear of the production company’s interest because he believes that “it’s a story that deserves to be told.
“It’s a typically Portuguese story, of improvisation, of emigrants, of adventure, of going against the wind and getting there. I am proud to be able to tell it,” António Reis, a native of Avintes, Gaia, now 65 years old, told Lusa.
The former Olympic athlete, American soccer and rowing champion, who got enthusiastic about the sport, practiced in a sled with blades, in which you go down a winding and steep ice track at high speed, after being given balance with the race, then challenged four other Portuguese with physical preparation, three university students and one still in high school, to embark on “the adventure” Olympic.
“This is the Portuguese who dare and do it. It is the story of Portugal, a country of adventurers. Metaphorically, it represents what we are, being Portuguese,” António Reis, 31 years old at the time, the oldest of the five, summarized to Lusa news agency.
Diogo Machado said that the film would be based on first-person testimonies. However, he has not yet guaranteed the participation of all former athletes, and plans to film in places where they trained, also in Calgary, and use archival footage, to contract them with the current, as well as give an idea of what bobsled is and what represented at the time the Portuguese participation in the Winter Olympics, until today the most numerous ever.

Santo Tirso, Porto, 05 fev 2022 (Lusa) – A saga de cinco portugueses que, sem praticarem a modalidade, criaram uma equipa e, em menos de um ano, se apuraram no bobsleigh para os Jogos Olímpicos de Inverno Calgary1988 vai dar origem a um filme documental.
A informação foi adiantada à agência Lusa pelo produtor, Diogo Machado, que se interessou pela “história ao estilo português do desenrasca, insólita”, de António Reis, João Poupada, Jorge Magalhães, João Pires e Rogério Bernardes, emigrantes no Canadá e ex-atletas olímpicos numa modalidade que em Portugal não se pratica e é relativamente desconhecida.
Os cinco portugueses, quatro deles estudantes na altura e todos atletas de outras modalidades, ambicionaram estar nos Jogos Olímpicos que iam decorrer no país de acolhimento e, depois de muitas peripécias, conseguiram estar na competição com as cores lusas vestidas e a utilizar trenós alugados.
O grupo acabou por rasgar um caminho inóspito, num desporto dispendioso, e de uma miragem transformou o sonho em realidade, jornada que chamou a atenção da produtora PawkPawkPawk, de Santo Tirso.
“Queremos contar a jornada épica do herói que consegue ultrapassar todas as adversidades e chegar ao seu auge, neste caso os Jogos Olímpicos. É uma mensagem de que é possível derrubar obstáculos e, em conjunto, alcançar algo maior, levar uma ideia até ao fim”, antecipou, em declarações à agência Lusa, Diogo Machado, segundo o qual o projeto está ainda “numa fase embrionária”.
O quinto filme do realizador Dinis Machado encontra-se em período de desenvolvimento até ao final de 2022, para a “angariação de financiamento, parcerias, construção da base e da produção”, embora o produtor garanta que mesmo que candidaturas apresentadas para o efeito não sejam aprovadas, “o filme será feito”, em parceria com equipas no Canadá.
Diogo Machado prevê que a rodagem só comece no final de 2022 ou no início de 2023, para a película ser lançada em 2024.
António Reis, um dos protagonistas da história, disse que se alguém lhe contasse o que ele fez com os quatro colegas como ideia para um filme, “diria que é inverosímil”.
“É uma história que nos transcende, maior do que nós, e tivemos orgulho de a viver”, vincou.
O consultor em marketing e antigo assessor político e publicitário afirmou ter ficado “supercontente” ao saber do interesse da produtora, por entender que “é uma história que merece ser contada”.
“É uma história tipicamente portuguesa, de improviso, de emigrantes, de aventura, de ir contra o vento e chegar lá. Tenho orgulho de a poder contar”, frisou, à Lusa, António Reis, natural de Avintes, Gaia, agora com 65 anos.
O ex-atleta olímpico, campeão de futebol americano e de remo, que se entusiasmou pelo desporto praticado num trenó com lâminas, no qual se desce uma pista de gelo sinuosa e íngreme a alta velocidade, depois de lhe ser dado balanço com a corrida, desafiou depois quatro outros portugueses com preparação física, três estudantes universitários e um ainda no liceu, para embarcarem “na aventura” olímpica.
“Isto é o português que se atreve e faz. É a história de Portugal, um país de aventureiros. Metaforicamente, representa o que somos, o ser português”, sintetizou, à agência Lusa, António Reis, na altura com 31 anos, o mais velho dos cinco.
Diogo Machado adiantou que o filme se vai basear em testemunhos na primeira pessoa, embora ainda não tenha a garantia da participação de todos os antigos atletas, e prevê filmar nos locais onde treinaram, também em Calgary, e recorrer a imagens de arquivo, para as contratar com as atuais, assim como dar uma ideia do que é o bobsleigh e o que representou na altura a participação portuguesa nos Jogos Olímpicos de Inverno, até hoje a mais numerosa de sempre.
