Sopa de Pedra or stone soup is a traditional Portuguese soup. It is more associated with the city of Almeirim, which is located in the heart of the Ribatejo region of Portugal and is considered the city of Portuguese stone soup.
The Portuguese Legend
A poor friar, while on a pilgrimage, arrived one day in the city of Almeirim, Portugal. Being too proud to beg for food, he asked the locals if they could lend him a pot so that he could prepare his Stone Soup.
The villagers were curious to see how he made the stone soup and he pulled out a beautiful, smooth, well-washed stone from his pouch.
The friar then said that he needed a wood fire and the villagers helped him gather some wood to start a fire.
He then asked if someone could let him borrow a large kettle with water to make his stone soup, and one of the villagers went home, brought back a kettle with water, and set it over the fire.
The friar gently placed the stone in the kettle and, after the water started boiling, he tasted it and said that the soup needed to be seasoned with a little salt.
One of the villagers offered to go home and get some salt for seasoning, but the friar suggested that it would taste even better if it was a chouriço (sausage) or touçinho (bacon).
The villager went home and brought back the chouriço and touçinho and the friar added it to the kettle.
The friar then asked if someone had anything to thicken the soup, like potatoes, beans, or other vegetables, and several of the villagers went home to gather more ingredients for the soup.
A short time later a delicious soup was ready to be eaten and the friar invited the villagers to join him in eating the soup together.
They all ate the soup and after they were done the friar removed the stone from the kettle, washed it, and carefully placed it back in his pouch ready for the next soup.
Sopa da Pedra Portuguesa is a traditional dish from Almeirim, in Santarém, and is part of a popular European folk story. The story has several variations of a similar theme, hungry travelers arrive in a new place and start begging for food.
This story is believed to have a moral connotation to reinforce the importance of sharing in times of need.

Perguntou então se alguém lhe podia emprestar uma grande chaleira com água para fazer a sua sopa de pedra, e um dos aldeões foi para casa, trouxe de volta uma chaleira com água, e colocou-a sobre a fogueira.
O frade colocou gentilmente a pedra na caldeirão e, depois da água começar a ferver, disse que a sopa precisava de ser temperada.
Um dos aldeões ofereceu-se para ir para casa e trazer sal para temperar, mas o frade sugeriu que seria melhor se tambem tivesse chouriço e touçinho.
O aldeão foi para casa e trouxe de volta o sal, chouriço e touçinho para o frade adicionar ao caldeirão.
O frade perguntou então se alguém tinha algo para engrossar a sopa, como batatas, feijão, ou outros vegetais, e vários dos aldeões foram para casa para recolher mais ingredientes para a sopa.
Pouco tempo depois, uma sopa deliciosa estava pronta para ser comida e o frade convidou os aldeões a juntarem-se a ele para comerem juntos a sopa.
Todos comeram a sopa e depois de terminada, o frade retirou a pedra da chaleira, lavou-a, e colocou-a cuidadosamente na sua bolsa pronta para a sopa seguinte.
Sopa da Pedra Portuguesa é um prato tradicional de Almeirim, em Santarém, e faz parte de uma popular história popular europeia. A história tem várias variações de um tema semelhante, viajantes famintos chegam a um novo lugar e começam a mendigar por comida.
