President of the Government begins visit to the US leaving “a fraternal embrace of the Azores and Azoreanity” to the Diaspora

The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, and the Vice-President of the Government, Artur Lima, started today a visit to the Azorean diaspora of New England, in the United States of America (USA), leaving in East Providence “a fraternal embrace of the Azores and Azoreanity.

“As an Azorean, I am very proud of our community, of your success. The Azores benefit greatly from your ability to succeed in life,” said the President of the Government, addressing a few dozen leaders of cultural and economic associations of Azorean communities in the state of Rhode Island, in East Providence.

Azoreanity and Portugality “are projected throughout the world, especially within the Diaspora, in the hosting country,” due to the “prestige and merit” of those who emigrated, “there is the consideration for the Azores and for Portugal.

José Manuel Bolieiro left the assurance, from the 13th Regional Government of the Azores, of wanting to promote a “future relationship that confirms, consolidates and innovates” the role of the Azorean diaspora, always with dialogue and “humility and interest” in listening to the wishes of the people.

“I fight against the illusion that we know everything without listening to anyone, and that we determine, as leaders, without others having a chance to listen and welcome a top-down decision. These community and entrepreneur meetings can also be an opportunity for us to hear suggestions and critical appraisals of how to do more and better,” he proceeded.

The structure of the Executive, he also recalled, has instilled the tutelage of the communities in the Vice-Presidency, proof of the importance given to all those who, coming from the Azores or being descendants of Azoreans, are deserving of “prestige, gratitude, and recognition.

José Manuel Bolieiro also recalled the investment opportunities in the nine islands of the Region, and valued the role of the Azores as a tourist destination capable of creating wealth and employment, always focusing on “environmental sustainability.”

“Nature is our goose that lays the golden eggs,” he told those present at the East Providence session.

The governor then gave a contextualization of the current political situation in the Azores, where there is now a government that is not just of one party but is rather the result of “democratic humility” and “understanding, concerted action, and reasonableness for common causes.

“Our path is not to do what has always been done. Otherwise, the results will be the same,” he also said, guaranteeing commitment to “resolve the burdens” for the sake of the Region’s stability.

The day’s work on the American continent ends at the New England Azorean House, in Fall River, with the launching of the book about Azorean Emigration to the US (“Volume 1 – From Columbus to World War I”), published by the Azorean Emigrants Association.

Tomorrow, and after contacts with representatives of the media that serve the Azorean communities in the area, José Manuel Bolieiro and Artur Lima will join the lunch commemorating the 30th anniversary of the New England Azorean House.

In parallel, an exhibition on Azorean emigration to the United States will be presented.

The New England Azorean House (CANI) was officially founded as the “Rhode Island State House of the Azores” in the state of East Providence on June 8, 1982, and its first president was Senator John Correia.

It was created with the goal of providing services to the community where it is located in a wide range of areas (educational, cultural, and social opportunities), as well as cultural and logistical exchange between the Azorean immigrant community in Southwest New England and the Azores.

After an interregnum of about eight years, on October 16, 1991, Leonardo Oliveira and a group of friends from his countrymen reopened the institution, already under the name Casa dos Açores da New England. Its first president was Paulo Bettencourt (1991), followed by José Soares (1993), Mariano Alves (2004) and João Luís Morgado Pacheco (1995 and 2006).

In 2010, Mário Ventura assumed the presidency until 2012, when Nélia Alves-Guimarães was elected the first woman president of this institution. In 2018, Francisco Viveiros assumed the presidency, which he still holds today.

Presidente do Governo inicia visita aos EUA deixando “um abraço fraterno dos Açores e da Açorianidade” à diáspora

O Presidente do Governo Regional dos Açores, José Manuel Bolieiro, iniciou hoje, juntamente com o Vice-Presidente do Governo, Artur Lima, uma visita à diáspora Açoriana da Nova Inglaterra, nos Estados Unidos da América (EUA), deixando em East Providence “um abraço fraterno dos Açores e da Açorianidade”.

“Como Açoriano, estou muito orgulhoso da nossa comunidade, do vosso sucesso. Os Açores beneficiam muito da vossa capacidade de singrar na vida”, declarou o Presidente do Governo, dirigindo-se a algumas dezenas de dirigentes associativos culturais e económicos das comunidades Açorianas do Estado de Rhode Island, em East Providence.

A Açorianidade e a Portugalidade “projetam-se pelo mundo fora, e sobretudo no quadro da diáspora, porque no país de acolhimento”, pelo “prestígio e mérito” de quem emigrou, “há consideração pelos Açores e por Portugal”.

José Manuel Bolieiro deixou a garantia, pelo XIII Governo Regional dos Açores, de querer promover um “relacionamento futuro que confirme, consolide e inove” o papel da diáspora Açoriana, sempre com diálogo e “humildade e interesse” em ouvir os anseios das pessoas.

“Luto contra a ilusão que sabemos tudo sem ouvir ninguém e que determinamos, como dirigentes, sem que os outros tenham uma oportunidade de ouvir e acolham uma decisão de cima para baixo. Estes encontros de comunidade e empreendedores também podem ser uma oportunidade para ouvirmos sugestões e apreciações críticas de como fazer mais e melhor”, prosseguiu.

A orgânica do Executivo, lembrou ainda, incutiu a tutela das comunidades na Vice-Presidência, prova da importância dada a todos os que, partindo dos Açores ou sendo descendentes de Açorianos, são merecedores de “prestígio, gratidão e reconhecimento”.

José Manuel Bolieiro lembrou ainda as oportunidades de investimento nas nove ilhas da Região e valorizou o papel dos Açores como destino turístico capaz de criar riqueza e emprego, sempre com foco na “sustentabilidade ambiental”.

“A Natureza é a nossa galinha dos ovos de ouro”, declarou aos presentes na sessão de East Providence.

O governante deixou posteriormente uma contextualização da atual situação política nos Açores, onde há agora um Governo que não é só de um partido e resulta antes de “humildade democrática” e de “entendimento, concertação e razoabilidade por causas comuns.

“O nosso percurso não é fazer o que sempre foi feito, se não os resultados serão os mesmos”, disse ainda, garantindo empenho em “resolver os encargos” em prol da estabilidade da Região.

O dia de trabalhos no continente Americano termina na Casa dos Açores da Nova Inglaterra, em Fall River, com o lançamento do livro sobre a Emigração Açoriana para os EUA (“Volume 1 – De Colombo à Primeira Guerra”), editado pela Associação dos Emigrantes Açorianos.

Amanhã, e após contactos com representantes dos órgãos de comunicação social que servem as comunidades Açorianas na zona, José Manuel Bolieiro e Artur Lima integram o almoço comemorativo dos 30 anos da Casa dos Açores da Nova Inglaterra.

Em paralelo, será apresentada uma exposição alusiva à emigração Açoriana para os Estados Unidos da América.

A Casa dos Açores da Nova Inglaterra (CANI) foi oficialmente fundada como “Casa dos Açores do Estado de Rhode Island”, no estado de East Providence, a 8 de junho de 1982 e teve como primeiro presidente o Senador John Correia.

Foi criada com o objetivo de prestar serviços à comunidade onde se encontra inserida nas mais variadas vertentes (oportunidades educacionais, culturais e sociais), bem como o intercâmbio cultural e logístico entre a comunidade Açoriana imigrante no Sudoeste da Nova Inglaterra e os Açores.

Após um interregno de cerva de oito anos, a 16 de outubro de 1991, Leonardo Oliveira e um grupo de amigos seus conterrâneos, reabriram a instituição, já sob a denominação de Casa dos Açores da Nova Inglaterra, sendo o seu primeiro presidente Paulo Bettencourt (1991), seguindo-se José Soares (1993), Mariano Alves (2004) e João Luís Morgado Pacheco (1995 e 2006).

Em 2010, Mário Ventura assumiu a presidência até 2012, altura em que Nélia Alves-Guimarães foi eleita a primeira mulher presidente desta instituição. Em 2018, Francisco Viveiros assumiu a presidência, que ainda exerce atualmente.
