Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Takes Place December 9, 2021, at 490 Central Street
The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) is inviting the community to attend the grand opening of the organization’s new Lowell office in the heart of the Portuguese-speaking community at 490 Central Street. The inauguration ceremony will take place on Thursday, December 9, 2021, from 4 to 7 pm.
In addition to taking a tour of the newly renovated building, community members attending the ceremony will be able to meet the organization’s Lowell staff, learn about its many free health and social services programs, and enjoy local musical entertainment, appetizers, wine, and other refreshments. With this new space, MAPS hopes to improve access and increase its visibility, creating a new vibrant community hub. The new building will also allow the organization to become more self-sufficient by saving on rental costs and generating rental income from the second-floor unit, which the organization hopes to lease.
“After 24 years of being in Lowell, this is a great milestone for MAPS, and we are so happy to welcome the community to our newly-renovated office building,” said Paulo Pinto, MPA, MAPS Executive Director. “This new location in the heart of the Portuguese-speaking community in Lowell will allow us to increase our accessibility and provide even more services to thousands of community members.”
The two-story brick building was purchased in February of 2021 and underwent extensive renovation work from May until November, including building six new private offices, a reception area, conference room, kitchen, and restrooms on the first floor, and partially renovating the second floor, including the installation of a new wheelchair lift funded by a grant from the Theodore Edson Parker Foundation.
MAPS expanded its services to Lowell in 1997 at the request of the city’s growing Portuguese-speaking community. The organization provides free citizenship assistance, immigrant integration, HIV/STI, domestic violence and sexual assault and family support services, and more to thousands of Lowell-area community members each year.
MAPS has served the Portuguese-speaking communities of Massachusetts and others since 1970. The organization offers a wide range of free health and social services through its six offices in Cambridge, Somerville, Brighton, Dorchester, Framingham, and Lowell. To learn more, visit www.maps-inc.org.

MAPS Convida a Comunidade para a Grande Inauguração do seu Novo Edifício Lowell

A Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) convida a comunidade a assistir à grande inauguração do novo escritório da organização em Lowell, no coração da comunidade de língua portuguesa, na 490 Central Street. A cerimónia de inauguração terá lugar na quinta-feira, 9 de Dezembro de 2021, das 16 às 19 horas.
Além de fazerem uma visita guiada ao edifício recentemente renovado, os membros da comunidade presentes na cerimónia poderão conhecer o pessoal da organização em Lowell, conhecer os seus muitos programas gratuitos de serviços sociais e de saúde, e desfrutar de entretenimento musical local, aperitivos, vinho, e outros refrescos.

Com este novo espaço, a MAPS espera melhorar o seu acesso e aumentar a sua visibilidade, criando um novo e vibrante centro comunitário. O novo edifício permitirá também que a organização se torne mais auto-suficiente, economizando nos custos de aluguer e gerando receitas de aluguer da unidade do segundo andar, que a organização espera conseguir alugar.
“Após 24 anos de permanência em Lowell, este é um grande marco para a MAPS, e estamos muito felizes por acolher a comunidade no nosso recém-renovado edifício de escritórios,” disse Paulo Pinto, MPA, Director Executivo da MAPS. “Esta nova localização no coração da comunidade de língua portuguesa em Lowell permitir-nos-á aumentar a nossa acessibilidade e prestar ainda mais serviços a milhares de membros da comunidade”.
O edifício de tijolo de dois andares foi comprado em Fevereiro de 2021 e passou por extensos trabalhos de renovação entre Maio e Novembro, incluindo a construção de seis novos escritórios privados, uma área de recepção, sala de conferências, cozinha e sanitários no primeiro andar, e a renovação parcial do segundo andar, incluindo a instalação de um novo elevador para cadeira de rodas financiado por uma subvenção da Theodore Edson Parker Foundation.
A MAPS expandiu os seus serviços para Lowell em 1997, a pedido da crescente comunidade lusófona da cidade. A organização fornece assistência gratuita de cidadania, integração de imigrantes, VIH/DST, violência doméstica e agressão sexual e serviços de apoio à família, e mais a milhares de membros da comunidade da zona de Lowell todos os anos.
