Washington, Oct 30, 2021 (Lusa) – Randi Charno Levine, a philanthropist, and cultural diplomat, will be the new U.S. ambassador to Portugal, according to a statement posted on the White House official website, becoming the second woman to head the American diplomatic representation in Lisbon.
The “intended appointment” of Randi Charno Levine was announced by US President Joe Biden on Friday, along with nine other names of officials appointed to various “key positions.
Randi Charno Levine is presented by the White House as “an arts advocate and leader in cultural diplomacy,” currently serving as a commissioner and member of the Executive Committee for Special Projects at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington.
“She has helped maintain and expand the museum’s permanent collection, chaired the 2019 ‘Portrait of a Nation’ gala, and revitalized its corporate partnership program,” the release reads.
Charno Levine is also a curator at the Meridian International Centre in Washington, DC, where she chairs the ‘Meridian Center for Cultural Diplomacy’ and is responsible for “guiding and leading its international exchange programs, exhibition development, and strategic and commercial partnerships.”
The future new US ambassador to Portugal is also a curator at the New Museum, in New York City, and a member of this museum’s Artemis Council, where she “supported diversity and equality of women in the arts and promoted global dialogues during her trips to China, Italy, Peru, Portugal, and Turkey.”
A published author, Charno Levine is a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s ‘Friends of the Costume Institute’ and a FACES board member of New York University’s ‘Comprehensive Epilepsy Center,’ having earned her BA in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
After Elizabeth Bagley, who served as US Ambassador to Portugal under President Bill Clinton from 1994 to 1997, Randi Charno Levine will be the second woman to head the US diplomatic representation in Lisbon.
Levine succeeds George E. Glass, who left Lisbon in January with the end of Donald Trump’s presidency, who had appointed him, and since then the US representation has been led by Kristin Kane.

Washington, 30 out 2021 (Lusa) – A filantropa e diplomata cultural Randi Charno Levine será a nova embaixadora dos EUA em Portugal, segundo um comunicado publicado na página oficial da Casa Branca, tornando-se a segunda mulher a chefiar a representação diplomática norte-americana em Lisboa.
A “intenção de nomeação” de Randi Charno Levine foi anunciada pelo presidente dos EUA, Joe Biden, na sexta-feira, juntamente com a de outros nove nomes de responsáveis apontados para diversos “cargos chave”.
Randi Charno Levine é apresentada pela Casa Branca como “uma defensora das artes e líder da diplomacia cultural”, desempenhando atualmente o cargo de comissária e membro do Comité Executivo para Projetos Especiais na Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, em Washington.
“Ela ajudou a manter e expandir a coleção permanente do museu, presidiu à gala ‘Portrait of a Nation’ de 2019 e revitalizou seu programa de parceria corporativa”, lê-se no comunicado.
Charno Levine é também curadora no Meridian International Centre, em Washington, onde preside ao ‘Meridian Center for Cultural Diplomacy’, sendo responsável por “orientar e liderar os seus programas de intercâmbio internacional, desenvolvimento de exposições e parcerias estratégicas e comerciais”.
A futura nova embaixadora dos EUA em Portugal é ainda curadora do New Museum, na cidade de Nova York, e membro do Artemis Council deste museu, onde “apoiou a diversidade e a igualdade das mulheres nas artes e promoveu diálogos globais durante suas viagens à China, Itália, Peru, Portugal e Turquia”.
Autora publicada, Charno Levine é membro do ‘Friends of the Costume Institute’ do Metropolitan Museum of Art e membro do conselho da FACES do ‘Comprehensive Epilepsy Center’ da Universidade de Nova Iorque, tendo obtido o seu bacharelado em jornalismo na Universidade do Missouri-Columbia.
Depois de Elizabeth Bagley, que entre 1994 e 1997 foi embaixadora dos EUA em Portugal, na presidência de Bill Clinton, Randi Charno Levine será a segunda mulher a chefiar a representação diplomática norte-americana em Lisboa.
Levine sucede a George E. Glass, que deixou Lisboa em janeiro com o fim da presidência de Donald Trump, que o tinha nomeado, tendo desde então a representação norte-americana sido conduzida pela encarregada de negócios Kristin Kane.
