From Drums to the Microphone
One of the most recognizable voices heard through the airwaves, and not only, is the voice of Dionísio Garcia. From the tone to his linguistic capacities, Garcia dominates the language of Camões (the poet laureate) notwithstanding having immigrated to the United States in 1980.
“… I left the island., but the island has never exited from me,” he said in an interview a few days ago. St. Michael is the island where he was born, in Calheta in the village of São Pedro, and was raised in Santa Clara.
Over two decades ago he became an announcer at the Portuguese radio station WJFD-FM and he continues to be ever-present every day at the end of the day. “Even today I am proud to be part of this so prestigious radio station,” he commented.
As a vocal ambassador of The Capitalists for four decades, Dionisio exchanged the drum sticks for a microphone and continues performing in many Portuguese clubs and associations throughout the entire United States, including Florida, California, and even Canada.
With two record deals with the group and one as a solo artist, Dionísio will be presenting his new solo work to celebrate his 50 years on stage to be entitled Half Century in Music.
His musical talent has come to light at the tender age of 10 as part of various musical group projects with childhood friends in small projects, even without a sound system.
With much willpower and natural talent, the big break took place at the hand of Victor Melo, at the time the bassist in the Teófilo Frazão Orchestra at the Solar da Graça, who tested him on drums. Although with some difficulty at his new instrument, even Maestro Teófilo and the great Victor Cruz lent their efforts and he surpassed some obstacles.
Years passed and Other groups such as Bet Calis, Estrelas do Monte with Mário Gerónimo were made to sound better with Garcia at drums. Many musical projects with Zeca Sousa, a childhood friend, followed. Garcia was also a founding member of the Folk Group Santa Cecília back in St. Michael.
Later he joined the Green Band, a heavy metal rock group, with the late Arnaldo Furtado on the microphone. When this band folded in 1976, Os Coriscos appeared, and that group also doubling up as the musical support for the very popular Açorianíssimo, directed and produced by Victor Cruz.
About 100 shows performed throughout the archipelago and the United States and Canada gave another musical stepping stone to many artists in the Project, including Garcia.
In 2015 he received the prestigious Portuguese Heritage Award from the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. “I have had a career which I am very proud of, not only in music but also in having been responsible for great musical events in the Portuguese community,” commented Garcia.
Although having attained the age of retirement, music is his constant companion, something he shares daily with the Portuguese Community which receives with open Arms and Much love for Half a century, whether he holds the drumsticks or the microphone.

DIONISIO GARCIA – 50 ANOS NA MÚSICA
Da Bateria ao Microfone
Uma das vozes Portuguesas mais reconhecidas através das ondas hertzianas, e não só, é a de Dionísio Garcia. Desde o timbre aos dotes linguísticos, Garcia domina a língua de Camões não obstante ter emigrado para os Estados Unidos em 1980.
“… deixei a ilha, mas a ilha nunca saiu de mim,” disse ele numa entrevista há poucos dias. São Miguel é a ilha que lhe serviu de berço, tendo nascido na Calheta na freguesia de São Pedro, e cresceu em Santa Clara.
Há mais de duas décadas ingressou como locutor na rádio Portuguesa WJFD-FM e lá continua a marcar presença todos os dias ao fim da tarde. “Ainda hoje me sinto orgulhoso de fazer parte de tão prestigiada estação,” comentou ele.
Como embaixador vocal dos Grupo Capitalistas há quatro décadas, Dionísio trocou as baguetes pelo microfone e continua atuando em inúmeros clubes e associações Portuguesas por quase todos os Estados Unidos, incluindo Flórida, Califórnia e mesmo no Canadá.
Várias gravações com o grupo e uma a solo solidificaram a sua estatura como músico, tendo em mãos um novo trabalho celebrando os seus 50 anos de carreira artística, o qual será intitulado Meio Século de Música, projetado para chegar às bancas dentro de algumas semanas.
A sua veia musical demonstrou-se aos dez anos de idade fazendo parte de grupos musicais com amigos de infância em projetos caseiros, mesmo sem aparelhagem sonora.
Assim com muita força de vontade e talento natural demonstrado a grande oportunidade surgiu pelas mãos de Victor Melo, nessa altura baixista da orquestra Teófilo Frazão no Solar da Graça, que o testou para tocar bateria. A formação for um tanto ou quanto difícil, mas o maestro Teófilo e o grande Victor Cruz prestaram os apoios imprescindíveis para vencer alguns obstáculos.
Os anos passaram e outros conjuntos como Bet Calis, Estrelas do Monte com Mário Gerónimo apresentaram mais tonalidade com Garcia à bateria. Muitos projetos musicais com Zeca Sousa, seu amigo de infância, sucederam-se. Garcia também foi membro fundador do Rancho Folclórico de Santa Cecília lá em São Miguel.
Mais tarde ingressou no grupo Green Band, um agrupamento de rock tipo heavy metal, com o saudoso vocalista Arnaldo Furtado. Quando essa banda atingiu o ponto final em 1976, Os Coriscos surgiram, tendo esse agrupamento prestado o apoio musical ao Açorianíssimo, sob a direção, produção e realização de Victor Cruz.
Uma centena de espetáculos com digressões pelo arquipélago e aos Estados Unidos e Canadá deram outro patamar musical a muitos integrados nesse projeto, incluindo a Garcia.
Em 2015 foi-lhe atribuído o Prémio da Herança Portuguesa pela Casa dos Representantes do Estado de Massachusetts. “Tenho tido uma carreira que me orgulho muito, não só na musica como também na realização de grandes eventos musicais na comunidade Portuguesa,” comentou Garcia.
Apesar de já ter atingido a idade da reforma, a música é a sua companhia constante, algo que ele partilha diariamente com a comunidade Portuguesa que o abraça e acarinha há meio século, quer segurando as baguetes ou o microfone.
