We remember that it was 2 years ago on April 1 that the crystal clear, loving voice of Suzy Fagundes passed into eternity and left her mark on our Hearts.
Suzy Fagundes (Suzanne Fagundes) of New Bedford, passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital on April 1, 2019. She was 36 years old at the time.
The lyrics of the song “Paizinho” by the late Jack Sebastião, connected with the sweetness of its performer, and thus the song, and the performer, became a hit.
Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, with Azorean roots, from Terceira Island on her father’s side and São Miguel on her mother’s side, her kindness, affection, sympathy, and humility captivated the world.
Since the age of 5 she became interested in music, later studying piano, clarinet and voice.
Her love for everything Portuguese led her to the folkloric ranch of the Azorean Cultural Society [SCA], at that time under the direction of the late Norma Santos. “She was the first little one to sing here in our area with the help of Jack Sebastião who helped her develop,” said Fernando Santos, who led the SCA for 20 years.
“She loved the music,” recalls Santos who started the SCA Mini Miss pageant sometime in 1986 with the help of his wife.
Suzy won the SCA Mini Miss pageant a few years later. “She always belonged to the Society’s activities … she was a very active girl,” he pointed out.

Mário Costa, the former owner of Henda Records, remembers Suzy fondly. “Time runs fast, but the good memories remain,” he commented.
“When through the years we learn to love a nice family and a young artist, in particular, it becomes difficult, to write or talk about them, without running the risk of exaggerating, this in the case of the ill-fated Suzy,” Costa added recalling that in 1997 the album “PAIZINHO” was released. “… and she became a pleasant surprise at the opening of the big HENDA shows, and success began to knock on her door,” concludes Costa.

Nancy Simão remembers her friend since she was 8 years old from the SCA parties. “When I was sad, Suzy was the one who made me smile, we were very good friends” recalls Nancy, who was one of the dancers in Suzy’s shows, when the bonds of friendship between them solidified even more.
“We both grew up and didn’t see each other that much, but there was always contact on birthdays,” Nancy added. “What I remember most is her joy and smile,” she stated wistfully.
The pain felt is palpable when talking to her parents, Luis and Irene Fagundes. “Suzy started with Dionisio Garcia at the Song Festival in New Jersey, he did a children’s song and wanted Suzy to go and she sang with other children,” explained Ms. Fagundes with tears dancing in her eyes and the audible lump in her throat.
“Then it was Mr. Viriato Costa, and piano lessons … she learned a lot,” said Ms. Fagundes. A few years later she chose music and performed at a big party at the Fisherman’s Club in our parish, and never stopped,” stressed her mother with a sad smile.

“Helping everyone, that’s what she wanted to do,” offered her father, Luís Fagundes, during the short interview I conducted a few weeks ago.
“Even if she didn’t have a dime, she would give and go looking to give to people–she was always like that,” he added about his little girl.
“She was always ready to sing at events to benefit any cause or person … even when they had a big party to raise money to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, she went there to help, too,” Fagundes said.
Suzy toured Bermuda, the Azores, Canada, and California. On one of those trips to the West Coast, she worked with Alcides Machado.

“I met Suzy when she was still a little child starting her artistic career,” Alcides shared. “An innocent little girl, very well educated and always with a happy smile,” the veteran singer further said. “I had the privilege of singing with her not only on various stages on the East Coast of the United States but also many times in California … several times in Canada, as well as on cruises,” he recalls.
It was at the age of 22 that the ill-fated throat cancer disease appeared, but then it stalled, due to treatments, surgery removing 7 tumors from the vocal cords, and chemotherapy.
But in 2012 it came back strongly, we quote Irene Fagundes’ words here. Other troubled years welcomed her in 2012, but the cancer spread to her ovaries later. Still, she felt the happiness of giving birth to a little girl named Tatiana, now 13 years old, and remembering her mother with many Saudades.
Another adjective with which to describe Suzy is hardworking. She took courses in medical assistant, plus hairdressing. Always willing to work covering shifts of colleagues when they were absent.
The cancer was relentless, and it really got worse in late 2018. “She was admitted to the hospital in Boston on March 1 and died on April 1, 2019,” her mother told us in tears.
On a personal note, when I celebrated 20 years of my radio career, several artists came to the event, and Suzy also showed up. I remember when she came on stage singing “Yellow Roses” wearing a bouquet of those flowers. As she finished the song, she addressed me and presented me with the roses.
When I posthumously went to say goodbye to her, I reciprocated with a bouquet of yellow roses, as a symbol of our friendship.

Nascida em New Bedford, Massachusetts, com raízes Açorianas, da Ilha Terceira pela parte do pai e de São Miguel, do lado materno, a sua bondade, carinho, simpatia e humildade, cativou o mundo.
Desde os 5 anos interessou-se pela música, mais tarde estudou piano, clarinete e voz.
O seu amor por tudo que era Português levou-se ao rancho folclórico da Sociedade Cultural Açoriana [SCA], nessa altura sob a direção da saudosa Norma Santos. Entrou ainda em peças de teatro na mesma organização onde mostrou os seus multitalentos.

“Ela adorava a música,” lembra Santos que iniciou o concurso da Mini Miss da SCA algures em 1986 com o auxílio da esposa.
Suzy ganhou o concurso da Mini Miss da SCA alguns anos depois. “Ela sempre pertenceu às atividades da Sociedade … era uma menina muito ativa,” apontou ele.

“Quando através dos anos aprendemos a gostar muito de uma simpática família e de uma jovem artista, em particular, torna-se difícil, escrever ou falar sobre eles, sem corrermos o risco de exagerar, isto no caso da malograda Suzy,” adicionou Costa recordando que em 1997 foi lançado o álbum “PAIZINHO”. “… e ela passou a ser uma agradável surpresa na abertura dos grandes espetáculos da HENDA, e o sucesso principiou a bater-lhe à porta,” conclui Costa.

Nancy Simão recorda a sua amiga desde os 8 anos das festas da SCA. “Quando eu estava triste, era a Suzy que me fazia sorrir, eramos muito amigas,” recorda Nancy, que foi uma das bailarinas em espetáculos da Suzy, quando os laços de amizade entre elas ainda solidificaram mais.
“Ambas crescemos e não nos víamos assim tanto, mas sempre havia contacto quando de aniversários,” acrescentou Nancy. “O que eu mais recordo é a sua alegria e sorriso,” declarou ela com saudade.
A dor sentida pelos progenitores é palpável quando falamos com os pais, Luís e Irene Fagundes. “A Suzy começou com o Dionísio Garcia no Festival da Canção em New Jersey, ele fez uma canção de crianças e quis que a Suzy fosse e ela cantou com outras crianças,” explicou a Senhora Fagundes com as lágrimas bailando nos olhos e o audível nó na garganta.
“Depois foi o Sr. Viriato Costa, e lições de piano … ela aprendeu muita coisa,” disse a Senhora Fagundes. Poucos anos depois ela optou pela música e apresentou-se numa grande festa no Fisherman Club da nossa freguesia, e nunca mais parou,” frisou a mãe envergando um sorriso triste.

“Ajudar a toda a gente, é o que ela queria fazer,” ofereceu o pai, Luís Fagundes durante a pequena entrevista por mim feita há poucas semanas.
“Mesmo que não tivesse um centavo, ela dava e ia procurar para dar às pessoas–sempre foi assim,” acrescentou ele sobre a sua menina.
“Ela sempre estava pronta para cantar em eventos em benefício de qualquer causa ou pessoa–até quando fizeram uma grande festa para angariar fundos para ajudar as vítimas do furacão Katrina, ela também foi lá ajudar,” disse Fagundes.
Suzy fez digressões à Bermuda, Açores, Canadá e Califórnia. Numa dessas viagens à Costa Oeste, trabalhou com Alcides Machado.
”Conheci a Suzy quando ela ainda era uma criancinha a iniciar a sua carreira artística,” partilhou ele.

“Uma menina inocente, muito bem educada e sempre com um sorriso alegre,” disse ainda o cantor veterano. “Tive o privilégio de cantar com ela não só em vários palcos da costa leste dos Estados Unidos, mas também muitas vezes na Califórnia … várias vezes no Canadá, como também em cruzeiros,” recorda ele.
Foi com 22 anos que a malograda doença de cancro na garganta apareceu, mas depois estagnou, devido a tratamentos, cirurgia retirando 7 tumores das cordas vocais, e incluindo quimioterapia. Mas em 2012 voltou com força, citamos aqui as palavras de Irene Fagundes.
Outros anos atribulados acolheram-na em 2012, mas o cancro alastrou para os ovários mais tarde. Mesmo assim, ela sentiu a felicidade de dar à luz uma menina de nome Tatiana, hoje com 13 anos de idade, e lembrando a mãe com muitas Saudades.
Outro adjetivo com que se pode descrever a Suzy é trabalhadeira. Tirou o curso de assistente médica, e ainda de cabeleireira. Sempre disposta a trabalhar cobrindo turnos de colegas quando ausentes.
O cancro não deu tréguas e já em fins de 2018 é que realmente piorou. “Deu entrada o hospital em Boston a 1 de Março vindo a falecer a 1 de Abril de 2019,” disse-nos a mãe chorando.
Numa nota pessoal, quando eu fiz 20 anos de carreira radiofónica, vários artistas vieram ao evento, e Suzy também apareceu. Lembro-me que ela entrou em palco cantando “Rosas Amarelas” envergando um buquê dessas flores. Ao terminar a cantiga, dirigiu-se a mim e presenteou-me com as rosas.
Quando postumamente fui-me despedir dela, retribui com um buquê de rosas amarelas, como símbolo da nossa amizade.
