The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020 with a series of initiatives, including a special Gala taking place on April 25 at the Boston Marriott Hotel in Cambridge, which will focus on honoring “the builders of MAPS”, a group of approximately 50 individuals who have played crucial roles in the creation, establishment, and expansion of the health and social services nonprofit organization over the past half-century.
“This is an outstanding milestone for any organization, but especially for a community-based nonprofit like MAPS,” said Paulo Pinto, MPA, who has served as MAPS’ Executive Director for the past 20 years. “For this special event, we wanted the focus to be on the long history of the organization, as we highlight the incredible group of people who, over the past 50 years, were instrumental in creating and supporting MAPS, developing its programs, expanding its area of service, and strengthening its position as a highly-respected organization serving the Portuguese-speaking communities and others in Massachusetts.”
MAPS had its start as two separate organizations – The Cambridge Organization of Portuguese Americans (COPA), founded in 1970; and the Somerville Portuguese American League (SPAL), created in 1973, who separately served the large population of Portuguese immigrants in these cities for 20 years, focusing mostly in Immigrant Integration Services and Citizenship assistance.
In 1991, SPAL and COPA formally affiliated, and officially merged in July of 1993 to become MAPS. Among the new organization’s goals were improving service provision, ending program duplication, increasing financial stability and including and unifying the many segments of the Portuguese-speaking community in eastern Massachusetts, which now included growing Brazilian and Cabo Verdean communities.
Since then, the organization greatly expanded its programs and services to include support for victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, prevention and screening of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, family support services, and elder services; opened new offices in Lowell, Brighton, Dorchester, and Framingham, and increased its yearly budget to more than $3 million, allowing the organization to serve tens of thousands of community members each year.

The MAPS 50th Anniversary Gala is proudly presented at the Diamond sponsorship level by a group of Dunkin’ franchise owners – the Cafua, Carvalho, Couto, Rodrigues, Sardinha, and Serpa families. The Gala will be a glamorous black-tie event featuring musical entertainment, a keynote address, a fun cocktail reception, a delicious banquet with complimentary wine service, exciting live and silent auctions, a special anniversary ceremony with the presentation of commemorative medals and a celebration of the organizations’ rich history.

A Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) comemora o seu 50º aniversário em 2020 com uma série de iniciativas, incluindo uma Gala especial no dia 25 de abril no Boston Marriott Hotel em Cambridge, que terá como objetivo homenagear “os fundadores da MAPS”, um grupo de aproximadamente 50 indivíduos que desempenharam papéis cruciais na criação, estabelecimento e expansão da organização sem fins lucrativos de serviços sociais e de saúde ao longo do último meio século.
“Este é um marco marcante para qualquer organização, mas especialmente para uma organização sem fins lucrativos como a MAPS,” disse Paulo Pinto, MPA, que tem servido como Diretor Executivo da MAPS nos últimos 20 anos. “Para este evento especial, nós queríamos que o foco fosse a longa história da organização, pois destacamos o incrível grupo de pessoas que, nos últimos 50 anos, foram fundamentais para criar e apoiar a MAPS, desenvolver seus programas, expandir sua área de serviço e fortalecer sua posição como uma organização altamente respeitada servindo as comunidades de língua portuguesa e outras em Massachusetts“.
A MAPS teve inicio através de duas organizações separadas – a Organização de Cambridge de Portugueses Americanos (COPA), fundada em 1970; e a Liga Portuguesa Americana de Somerville (SPAL), criada em 1973, que atendeu separadamente a grande população de imigrantes portugueses nessas cidades por 20 anos, com foco principalmente nos Serviços de Integração de Imigrantes e na assistência à Cidadania.
Em 1991, a SPAL e a COPA se afiliaram formalmente, e se fundiram oficialmente em julho de 1993 para se tornarem na MAPS. Entre os objetivos da nova organização estavam melhorar a prestação de serviços, acabar com a duplicação de programas, aumentar a estabilidade financeira e incluir e unificar os muitos segmentos da comunidade de língua portuguesa no leste de Massachusetts, que agora incluía as crescentes comunidades brasileiras e cabo-verdianas.
Desde então, a organização expandiu grandemente os seus programas e serviços para incluir o apoio a vítimas e sobreviventes de violência doméstica e agressão sexual, prevenção e triagem do HIV e outras infecções sexualmente transmissíveis, serviços de apoio à família e serviços para idosos; abriu novos escritórios em Lowell, Brighton, Dorchester e Framingham, e aumentou o seu orçamento anual para mais de US$3 milhões, permitindo à organização servir dezenas de milhares de membros da comunidade a cada ano.
