Los Angeles, United States, Feb. 2, 2020 (Lusa) – The Azorean heritage of Devin Nunes, a Lusodescendant who represents California’s 22nd district, “shapes the way he sees America,” Lee Smith, author of a book about the congressman, told Lusa.
“The Portuguese community of California is an important part of the book,” Lee Smith said, “and also the way the congressman has grown,” she said.
The author wrote “The Plot Against the President: The True Story of How Congressman Devin Nunes Uncovered the Biggest Political Scandal in U.S. History,” published in late October 2019 by Hachette Central Street.
“Who he is as a person is very attached to this community. His sense of what America is, what duty and responsibility are, comes a lot from his family and feeling Azorean,” said Lee Smith, who spent time with Devin Nunes and his close circle in Tulare, central California, during research for the book.
According to Smith, who met with the Portuguese-American congressman in March 2017, Devin Nunes “feels extremely proud of his family’s history, the fact that they are Portuguese.

The Portuguese community, which is in great concentration in the central valley, is highlighted by its importance in California’s history. “They are farmers, hard-working people, milk producers, pistachio farmers”, Lee Smith stressed.
“It’s part of how the congressman views his American identity,” he said.
In the first chapter, Devin Nunes says that the Azores are “a beautiful place but also difficult to live in” and characterizes Azoreans as “resilient people” who “know they have to rely on themselves”.
His family, who owned a small farm, was poor but survived even during the depression, the book says.
“Portuguese readers may be surprised and at the same time pleased to know that this is about a man from an Azorean family whose heritage shapes the way he sees America and California,” Lee Smith said.
“The Portuguese were very important to the settlement and prosperity of California. Without their contribution and their farming, without their industry and hard work, this would be a very different place,” he said.
In some pages of the book, Lee Smith portrays an event of the Portuguese community near Tulare in which the congressman participated.
The lusodescendant has represented the 22nd district in the House of Representatives since 2002, having been re-elected in the midterm of November 2018 by the slightest margin of his career, something Lee Smith addressed in the book as a result of “a campaign against Devin Nunes.
The narrative characterizes ‘Russiagate’ as a “conspiracy theory” and takes the view of the congressman Lee Smith called a “Portuguese-American hero” because he “unmasked” a plot against Donald Trump perpetrated by agents of former President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party candidate defeated in 2016, Hillary Clinton.
The book was written based on conversations between the author and Devin Nunes over a period of about two years and depicts the period between the spring of 2017 and the summer of 2019, when Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller, who investigated the links between Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia, testified before the US Congress.
The Lusodescendant congressman is involved in several legal proceedings against his critics, including Republican strategist Liz Mair, the social network Twitter and some of its anonymous users, as well as media outlets such as CNN and Fresno Bee, the Californian daily of Fresno.
Devin Nunes is the grandson of Azoreans and one of three Portuguese-Americans in the U.S. Congress, along with Jim Costa, Democrat for the 16th District of California, and Lori Loureiro Trahan, Democrat for the 3rd District of Massachusetts.

“Quem ele é como pessoa está muito ligado a esta comunidade. O seu sentido do que é a América, o que é o dever e a responsabilidade, vêm muito da sua família e sentir-se açoriano”, afirmou Lee Smith, que passou algum tempo com Devin Nunes e o seu círculo próximo em Tulare, vale central da Califórnia, durante a pesquisa para o livro.
Segundo Smith, que travou conhecimento com o congressista luso-americano em março de 2017, Devin Nunes “sente-se extremamente orgulhoso da história da sua família, o facto de serem portugueses”.

No primeiro capítulo, Devin Nunes diz que os Açores são “um local lindíssimo mas também difícil de viver” e caracteriza os açorianos como “pessoas resistentes” que “sabem que têm de contar consigo próprias”.
A sua família, que detinha uma pequena propriedade agrícola, era pobre mas sobreviveu mesmo durante a depressão, lê-se no livro.
“Os leitores portugueses podem ficar surpreendidos e ao mesmo tempo agradados ao saberem que isto é sobre um homem de uma família açoriana cuja herança molda a forma como ele vê a América e a Califórnia”, disse Lee Smith.
“Os portugueses foram muito importantes para o assentamento e prosperidade da Califórnia. Sem o seu contributo e a sua lavoura, sem a sua indústria e trabalho árduo, isto seria um sítio muito diferente”, destacou.
Em algumas páginas do livro Lee Smith retrata um evento da comunidade portuguesa perto de Tulare em que o congressista participou.
O lusodescendente representa o 22.º distrito na Câmara dos Representantes desde 2002, tendo sido reeleito nas intercalares de novembro de 2018 pela menor margem da sua carreira, algo que Lee Smith abordou no livro como resultado de “uma campanha contra Devin Nunes”.
A narrativa caracteriza o ‘Russiagate’ como uma “teoria da conspiração” e toma o ponto de vista do congressista que Lee Smith chamou de “herói luso-americano” porque “desmascarou” uma trama contra Donald Trump, perpetrada por agentes do anterior Presidente, Barack Obama, e da candidata do Partido Democrata derrotada em 2016, Hillary Clinton.
