Los Angeles, United States, 05 Oct 2019 – The “Portugal no Coração” program will take 15 Portuguese emigrants living abroad and who have not visited Portugal for more than 20 years, to rediscover their native country on a sightseeing tour between 11 and 20 November.
The program, which is only valid for immigrants from outside of Europe, is promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the office of the Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, the Ministry of Solidarity, Employment and Social Security, through the Inatel Foundation, and by TAP Portugal.
“The initiative is intended to include a visit to Portugal for national citizens who, due to their economic situation, their advanced age and the distance between them and their homeland, could hardly do so by their own means,” he told Lusa official source of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The applications ended on 30 September and are now being evaluated by the office of the Secretary of State of the Portuguese Communities, who is responsible for selecting the emigrants who will benefit from the program. The decision should be based on the proposal of the jury appointed by the Directorate-General for Consular Affairs and Portuguese Communities (DGACCP), which is implementing the program.
Some of the application requirements are age 65 or over, a physical condition that allows them to travel independently and having a period of more than twenty years without visiting Portugal.

The regulation indicates, however, that candidates who meet these requirements but have advantageous economic conditions will not be considered since the program aims to bridge the gap with emigrants who are away from Portugal for lack of means.
There is also the possibility of extending the period of stay after the program if the emigrant has relatives or friends who can cover the costs of accommodation.
The program promises to introduce “modern museums and historical monuments”, provide “the dishes and sweets that make Portuguese gastronomy one of the best in the world” and show emigrants “how much their home country has changed”, in a full-board trip in the company of other Portuguese from the diaspora.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this program was created in 1996 and interrupted only in 2015 “due to a lack of candidates in sufficient numbers to hold the annual edition”.
In California, where the largest Portuguese-American community in the United States is concentrated, the president of the Portuguese-American coalition in California (CPAC), Diniz Borges, said that knowledge of the program is scarce, even if there are emigrants who qualify under the requirements.
The MNE’s accounts indicate that, since its inception, the “Portugal no Coração” program has brought to Portugal 840 emigrants residing in 25 countries, including the United States and Canada.

Los Angeles, Estados Unidos, 05 out 2019 (Lusa) – O programa “Portugal no Coração” vai levar 15 emigrantes portugueses no estrangeiro que não visitam o país há mais de vinte anos a redescobrirem o país natal, numa viagem de turismo entre 11 e 20 de novembro.
O programa, válido apenas para emigrantes de fora da Europa, é promovido pelo Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros, através do gabinete do secretário de Estado das Comunidades Portuguesas, Ministério da Solidariedade, Emprego e Segurança Social, através da Fundação Inatel, e pela TAP Portugal.
“A iniciativa destina-se a contemplar com uma visita a Portugal aos cidadãos nacionais que pela sua situação económica, pelo avançado da idade e pela distância que os separa da sua terra natal, dificilmente o poderiam fazer pelos seus próprios meios”, disse à Lusa fonte oficial do Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros.
As candidaturas terminaram em 30 de setembro e estão agora a ser avaliadas pelo gabinete do secretário de Estado das Comunidades Portuguesas, a quem cabe selecionar os emigrantes que vão beneficiar do programa. A decisão deverá basear-se na proposta do júri designado pela Direção-Geral dos Assuntos Consulares e das Comunidades Portuguesas (DGACCP), que executa o programa.
Entre os requisitos de candidatura estão idade igual ou superior a 65 anos, condição física que lhes permita viajar autonomamente e um período de mais de vinte anos sem visitar Portugal.

O regulamento indica, no entanto, que os candidatos que cumpram estes requisitos mas tenham condições económicas vantajosas não serão considerados, visto que o programa pretende fazer a ponte com os emigrantes que estão afastados de Portugal por falta de meios.
Existe ainda a possibilidade de alargar a temporada de estadia após o programa, caso o emigrante tenha familiares ou amigos que possam suportar os encargos de alojamento.
O programa promete dar a conhecer “museus modernos e monumentos históricos”, proporcionar “os pratos e doçaria que fazem da gastronomia portuguesa uma das melhores do mundo” e mostrar aos emigrantes “o quanto o seu país natal mudou”, numa viagem em pensão completa na companhia de outros portugueses da diáspora.
De acordo com o Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros, este programa foi criado em 1996 e interrompido apenas em 2015 “por falta de candidatos em número suficiente para a realização da edição anual”.
Na Califórnia, onde se concentra a maior comunidade luso-americana dos Estados Unidos, o presidente da coligação de luso-americanos na Califórnia (CPAC), Diniz Borges, referiu que o conhecimento do programa é escasso, mesmo que haja emigrantes que se qualificam no âmbito dos requisitos.
