Lisbon, 04 Oct 2019 – A total of 97,244 Portuguese living abroad have so far voted by letter for the legislative elections, three times more than in 2015, according to the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Administration (SGMAI).
The latest SGMAI report with information and figures on the electoral process states that 88,244 response letters were received by Thursday, sent by voters living abroad, while in 2015 they voted 31,610.
However, an official source from the Ministry of Internal Administration told Lusa that 9,000 letters were received today from Portuguese residents abroad, totaling 97,244.
The SGMAI report indicates that of the 88,244 letters received, 69,053 were sent by the Portuguese who vote for the circle of Europe and 19,191 for Outside Europe.
The Portuguese residing in France were the ones who voted in the highest number, a total of 35,182, followed by Brazil (11,322) and Switzerland (9,779), according to the SGMAI report.
Last year, the automatic census of Portuguese living abroad was approved, enabling the number of voters to be increased from around 300,000 to 1.4 million.

In the last legislative elections in 2015, there were 242,852 registered voters and 31,610 voters voted, of which 28,354 were considered valid (11.68%).
SGMAI also reports that 87,521 ballot papers were returned “for various reasons”, compared to 38,367 four years ago.
Letters may be returned for various reasons, including the voter not residing at the address indicated, the ballot paper not having been claimed or the voter already having died.
Abroad, 1,464,514 voters are registered to vote by post, 895,386 of whom are from the circle of Europe and 569,128 from outside Europe, and 2,240 to vote in person, 204 from Europe and 2,036 from outside Europe.
For the Portuguese to vote in person, the Directorate General of Consular Affairs and Portuguese Communities will install 79 polling places in consulates.
The Electoral Administration sent a total of 1,464,709 letters, 1,464,508 sent initially, six additional expeditions resulting from complaints and 195 second mailings.
The vote of Portuguese emigrants by post will have to be sent by the day of the election (October 6) and arrive at the Assembly of Collection and Counting, in Lisbon, by October 16.

Lisboa, 04 out 2019 (Lusa) – Um total de 97.244 portugueses residentes no estrangeiro votaram até hoje por carta para as eleições legislativas, três vezes mais do que em 2015, segundo a Secretaria Geral do Ministério da Administração Interna (SGMAI).
O último relatório da SGMAI com informações e números sobre o processo eleitoral refere que foram rececionadas até quinta-feira 88.244 cartas resposta, remetidas pelos eleitores residentes no estrangeiro, enquanto em 2015 votaram 31.610.
Entretanto, fonte oficial do Ministério da Administração Interna indicou à Lusa que durante o dia de hoje foram recebidas 9.000 cartas de portugueses residentes no estrangeiro, totalizando 97.244.
O relatório da SGMAI indica que, das 88.244 cartas recebidas, 69.053 foram remetidas pelos portugueses que votam pelo círculo da Europa e 19.191 por Fora da Europa.
Os portugueses residentes em França foram os que votaram em maior número, um total de 35.182, seguido do Brasil (11.322) e Suíça (9.779), refere o relatório da SGMAI.
No ano passado foi aprovado o recenseamento automático dos portugueses residentes no estrangeiro, que permitiu alargar o número de eleitores de cerca de 300 mil para 1,4 milhões.
Nas últimas legislativas de 2015, o universo eleitoral era de 242.852 inscritos e votaram 31.610 votos eleitores, dos quais 28.354 foram considerados válidos (11,68%).
A SGMAI refere também que foram devolvidos “por motivos vários” 87.521 boletins de voto, contra os 38.367 de há quatro anos.
As cartas podem ser devolvidas por vários motivos, nomeadamente o eleitor não residir no endereço indicado, o boletim não ter sido reclamado ou o eleitor já ter morrido.
No estrangeiro, estão inscritos 1.464.514 eleitores para votar por via postal, 895.386 dos quais pelo círculo da Europa e 569.128 por Fora da Europa, e 2.240 para votar presencialmente, 204 da Europa e 2.036 de Fora da Europa.
Para os portugueses votarem presencialmente, a Direção Geral dos Assuntos Consulares e das Comunidades Portuguesas vai instalar 79 locais de voto nos consulados.
A Administração Eleitoral enviou no total 1.464.709 cartas, 1.464.508 expedidas inicialmente, seis expedições adicionais resultantes de reclamações e 195 segundos envios.
O voto dos emigrantes portugueses por via postal terá de ser expedido até ao dia da eleição (06 de outubro) e chegar à Assembleia de Recolha e Contagem, em Lisboa, até 16 de outubro.
