Around 900 passengers on SATA flights are expected to be affected on Wednesday by the passage of hurricane “Lorenzo” through the Azores, according to an estimate by the airline’s emergency office released to Lusa agency.
The SATA group met today with its emergency office to take measures to minimize the possible impact that the passage of hurricane “Lorenzo” through the Azores may have on scheduled flights.
According to the SATA group spokesperson, António Portugal, depending on the likely course of the hurricane – which “should affect mostly” the islands of the Central Group (Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira) and Western (Flores and Corvo) -, precautionary measures were taken in terms of airport facilities and the fleet of Azores Airlines and SATA Air Açores.
According to António Portugal, SATA’s emergency office, chaired by the member of the board of directors Ana Azevedo, said that, in addition to “quantifying the flights and passengers that could be affected by these operational irregularities”, it is already “providing the respective protection or re-routing on the day and the following days”.
It is estimated that, in the case of Azores Airlines, which operates the archipelago’s external connections, 500 passengers will be affected on flights with the islands of Pico and Faial, in both directions.
In the case of SATA Air Açores, which guarantees inter-island connections, Flores, Corvo, Faial, Pico, Graciosa, and São Jorge should be affected, with an estimated 400 passengers being affected.
The SATA group anticipates the possibility of making “operational changes aimed at quickly placing passengers on flights that may be affected by the hurricane at their destinations”.
Hurricane “Lorenzo”, which today became Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, was in the morning at approximately 1,800 kilometers southwest of the Azores, but a “decrease in intensity is expected in the coming days”.
According to a statement issued this morning by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), at 09:00 the hurricane – which on Sunday night was described as category 4 and already had other classifications – was moving “north/northeast at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.
The Saffir-Simpson scale measures the intensity of hurricanes between levels 1 and 5, 5 being the most intense level.

“Keeping the predictions of the trajectory, the center of the hurricane should pass very close to the Western group (Flores and Corvo), thus affecting the entire archipelago next Wednesday,” reads the statement signed by meteorologist Elsa Vieira, the delegation of the Azores IPMA.
However, “due to the distance, the hurricane is at”, the IPMA reiterates that “there is still uncertainty regarding the exact trajectory and the respective intensity with which it may reach the archipelago”.
A new IPMA communiqué will be issued tonight at 21:00 local time (another hour in Lisbon).

Açores/Mau Tempo: Cerca de 900 passageiros da SATA poderão ser afetados pelo “Lorenzo”
Ponta Delgada, Açores, 30 set 2019 (Lusa) – Cerca de 900 passageiros de voos do grupo SATA deverão ser afetados na quarta-feira pela passagem do furacão “Lorenzo” pelos Açores, segundo uma estimativa do gabinete de emergência da operadora aérea divulgada à agência Lusa.
O grupo SATA reuniu hoje o seu gabinete de emergência para tomar medidas que visam minimizar os eventuais impactos que a passagem do furacão “Lorenzo” pelos Açores venha a provocar nos voos programados.
Segundo o porta-voz do grupo SATA, António Portugal, em função do provável percurso do furacão – que “deverá afetar maioritariamente” as ilhas do grupo Central (Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa e Terceira) e Ocidental (Flores e Corvo) -, foram tomadas medidas de precaução em termos de instalações aeroportuárias e da frota da Azores Airlines e da SATA Air Açores.
De acordo Com António Portugal, o gabinete de emergência da SATA, presidido pela vogal do conselho de administração Ana Azevedo, referiu que, além de estarem já “quantificados os voos e passageiros que poderão ser afetados por essas irregularidades operacionais”, já está “providenciada a respetiva proteção ou reencaminhamento ainda no dia e nos dias subsequentes”.
Estima-se que, no caso da Azores Airlines, que assegura as ligações do arquipélago com o exterior, sejam afetados 500 passageiros nos voos com as ilhas do Pico e Faial, nos dois sentidos.
No caso da SATA Air Açores, que garante as ligações interilhas, Flores, Corvo, Faial, Pico, Graciosa e São Jorge deverão ser atingidas, estimando-se que 400 passageiros sejam afetados.
O grupo SATA prevê a possibilidade de se realizarem “alterações no plano operacional que visam colocar rapidamente nos seus destinos os passageiros dos voos que eventualmente possam ser afetados pelo furacão”.
O furacão “Lorenzo”, que hoje passou à categoria 2 na escala de Saffir-Simpson, encontrava-se de manhã a aproximadamente 1.800 quilómetros a sudoeste dos Açores, mas está prevista uma “diminuição da intensidade nos próximos dias”.
Segundo um comunicado emitido esta manhã pelo Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), às 09:00 o furacão – que na noite de domingo era descrito como de categoria 4 e já teve outras classificações – deslocava-se “para norte/nordeste a uma velocidade de 20 quilómetros por hora”.
A escala de Saffir-Simpson mede a intensidade dos furacões entre os níveis 1 e 5, sendo 5 o nível mais intenso.

“Mantendo-se as previsões da trajetória, o centro do furacão deverá passar muito próximo do grupo Ocidental (Flores e Corvo), afetando assim todo o arquipélago na próxima quarta-feira”, lê-se no comunicado assinado pela meteorologista Elsa Vieira, da delegação dos Açores do IPMA.
No entanto, “devido à distância a que o furacão se encontra”, o IPMA reitera que “existe ainda incerteza relativamente à trajetória exata e à respetiva intensidade com que poderá atingir o arquipélago”.
Um novo comunicado do IPMA será emitido esta noite às 21:00 locais (mais uma hora em Lisboa).
