Portugal’s leading male surfer, Frederico Morais, won the Azores Airlines Pro, part of the surfing qualification circuit, beating out Mitch Crews of Australia at the end of the competition on the Azores island of São Miguel.
‘Kikas’, as Morais is better known, secured 15.93 points (8.5 and 7.43) against 6.1 (4 and 2.1) for the Australian, clinching his second triumph of the year on the circuit, following his victory in the Pro Santa Cruz. That had brought him 3,000 points, against 6,000 from the Azores event, which bumped him up to 10th in the Qualifying Series ranking.
This was only the third QS win by Morais, who won the Martinique Pro in 2016 – the year he reached the finals of the Hawaiian Pro and the Vans World Cup.
On the world circuit, Morais’s best ever result was second at the Corona Open J-Bay in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, in 2017.
On his way to the final in the Azores, ‘Kikas’ had knocked out France’s Gatien Delahaye in the semi-finals, Jake Marshall of the US, in the quarter-finals, and Australia’s Jackson Baker in the fifth round.

Vasco Ribeiro, also from Portugal and ranked 69 in qualifying, also reached the fifth but was knocked out by Brazil’s Miguel Pupo, with 10.83 points (4 and 6.83), against 12.27 (6.5 and 5.77) for the Brazilian.

Frederico Morais vence etapa do circuito de qualificação de surf nos Açores
Ribeira Grande, Açores, 22 set (Lusa) – O português Frederico Morais venceu hoje o Azores Airlines Pro, do circuito de qualificação de surf, ao impor-se na final da prova disputada na ilha açoriana de São Miguel ao australiano Mitch Crews.
‘Kikas’, 30.º do ‘ranking’ de qualificação (QS), somou 15,93 pontos (8,5 e 7,43) contra 6,1 (4 e 2,1) do australiano, assegurando o segundo triunfo do ano no circuito, depois da vitória no Pro Santa Cruz, que valia 3.000 pontos, metade do campeonato que hoje terminou.
Este foi o terceiro triunfo no QS do surfista natural de Cascais, que também já tinha vencido o Martinique Pro em 2016, ano em que chegou às finais do Hawaiian Pro e do Vans World Cup.
No circuito mundial, o melhor resultado de Frederico Morais foi o segundo posto no Corona Open J-Bay, em Jeffreys Bay, na África do Sul, em 2017.
No caminho para a final, ‘Kikas’ eliminou o francês Gatien Delahaye, nas meias-finais, o norte-americano Jake Marshall, nos quartos de final, e o australiano Jackson Baker, na quinta ronda.
