The Deputy Regional Secretary of the Presidency for External Relations, Rui Bettencourt, argued today in Brussels that the Azores are “an exemplary region”, ensuring that there is a commitment to developing sustainable tourism of “excellence” in the archipelago.
“There is a global trend with increasing tourism, transportation, demand and a need for more nature tourism. With the Azores at the crossroads of this development and growth of tourism,” said Rui Bettencourt, who was speaking at a debate on new trends, challenges and solutions for sustainable tourism at the Regions’ meeting of the Committee on Natural Resources (NAT).
“Of course, the Azores have some challenges ahead, but they have come a long way in tourism management with a concern for environmental sustainability and the quality of tourism,” added the Deputy.
For the governor, the Region has difficulties that other regions also have in its growth but acknowledged that they also have a “good answer”, namely in the mission of having strong sustainability goals that highlight them at the European level.
In his speech, the Regional Secretary also said that the Azores “ special” and must be “well preserved”, stressing the importance of developing tourism in a sustainable way in the archipelago.
“There is international recognition for being a region with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability,” said Rui Bettencourt, highlighting the strategies that have been pursued by the Government of the Azores and the good indicators that exist at various levels, proving a consistent development with sustainability goals.

“All of this leads us to see this management of Azorean excellence in tourism,” he stressed, expressing the need to continue “preserving the environment, land, and sea”.
In that regard, the Regional Secretary also stressed the importance of “influence management” and “establishing partnerships”, involving social partners, stakeholders, commercial and tourism agents, among others.
“It is important to combine these various stakeholders so that our management of excellence is a reality,” he said
Bettencourt said it was “a good debate around a very important issue for the European Union right now, which is the development of tourism and sustainable quality tourism.”

O Secretário Regional Adjunto da Presidência para as Relações Externas defendeu hoje, em Bruxelas, que os Açores são “uma região exemplar“, assegurando que existe empenho em desenvolver um turismo sustentável de “excelência” no arquipélago.
“Há uma tendência global e mundial com o aumento do turismo, com o aumento dos transportes e com o aumento de uma procura e de uma necessidade um turismo mais de natureza, encontrando-se os Açores no cruzamento deste desenvolvimento e deste crescimento do turismo”, afirmou Rui Bettencourt, que falava num debate sobre as novas tendências, desafios e soluções para o turismo sustentável, no âmbito da reunião da Comissão dos Recursos Naturais (NAT) do Comité das Regiões.
“Evidentemente que os Açores têm alguns desafios pela frente nesta questão, mas têm-se aproximado muito na gestão do turismo de uma preocupação com a sustentabilidade ambiental e com a qualidade do turismo”, acrescentou o titular da pasta das Relações Externas.
Para o governante, a Região tem dificuldades que também outras regiões têm no seu crescimento, mas considerou que também têm “uma boa resposta”, nomeadamente na missão de terem objetivos de sustentabilidade forte que os destaque a nível europeu.
Na sua intervenção, o Secretário Regional disse ainda que os Açores “são especiais” e que devem ser “bem preservados”, frisando a importância de desenvolver o turismo de uma forma sustentável no arquipélago.
“Há um reconhecimento internacional por sermos uma região com um compromisso de sustentabilidade ambiental forte”, afirmou Rui Bettencourt, destacando as estratégias que têm sido levadas a cabo pelo Governo dos Açores e os bons indicadores que existem a vários níveis, provando um desenvolvimento de acordo com os objetivos de sustentabilidade.

“Tudo isso leva a constatarmos esta gestão da excelência açoriana no turismo”, salientou, realçando a necessidade de continuar a “preservar o meio ambiente, a terra e o mar”.
O Secretário Regional destacou ainda a importância de uma “gestão de influência” e de “estabelecer parcerias” nesse sentido, implicando os parceiros sociais, atores no terreno, agentes comerciais e turísticos, entre outros.
“É importante a conjugação destes vários atores para que essa gestão da nossa excelência seja uma realidade”, frisou.
Rui Bettencourt considerou ter sido “um bom debate à volta de uma questão muito importante para a União Europeia neste momento, que é o desenvolvimento do turismo e de um turismo sustentável de qualidade”.
