Serra da Estrela’s candidacy for World Geopark was approved by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at the 4th Session of the World Geoparks Council, held in Indonesia, was announced today.
“The Serra da Estrela region saw last Monday its application for World Geopark been approved by the UNESCO World Geopark Council, and now, is just waiting for the confirmation of the Executive Board of the United Nations agency,” said the Estrela Geopark Association in a statement sent to Lusa agency today.
According to Joaquim , president of the Estrela Geopark Association and the Guarda Polytechnic Institute (IPG), UNESCO’s approval of the candidacy “is the recognition of the geological potential of the territory and its natural and cultural heritage and, thus, a first step towards the sustainable development of the entire Estrela region. ”
“A natural effect of this first step will be the increase of the tourist, economic and social potential for the municipalities that are part of the territory. And, therefore, the increase in the quality of life of the population”, predicts Joaquim .
Estrela’s candidacy for World Geopark was approved by UNESCO at the 4th Session of the World Geopark Council, which took place in Gili, Indonesia.
The Estrelas Geopark Association is composed of nine municipalities in the districts of Guarda, Castelo Branco and Coimbra (Belmonte, Celorico da Beira, Covilhã, Fornos de Algodres, Gouveia, Guarda, Manteigas, Oliveira do Hospital and Seia) and also by IPG and the University. from Beira Interior (UBI).
The presidency of the association is held by IPG president Joaquim Brigas and the vice presidency by José Easter Marques, vice-rector of UBI.
“The two institutions of higher education in the region intend to invest in scientific research to ensure the best possible knowledge of the characteristics of the territory and its geological and landscape potential,” said Joaquim in a statement sent today to the Lusa agency.
According to the note, training of specialists in ecological preservation, environmental protection tourism management are some of the priorities of the IPG and UBI.
“We intend to meet the needs that need to be addressed in order to be able to keep the Serra Estrela area protected and make good use of the available resources,” he said.
The role of municipalities in the region is also highlighted by the president of Estrela Geopark Association, who said that “the involvement of all municipalities in this project, was more than an important pillar for the application process to progress, was paramount to the success achieved”.
“Also, it should be highlighted the work of the executive team, based at the Polytechnic Institute of Guarda, without which this result would not have been possible,” he added.

According to Joaquim Brigas, from now on, “only with a similar focus on the dissemination of the territory, its natural heritage and its endogenous products will it be possible to continue contributing to the development of Serra da Estrela”.
“The promotion, enhancement, and defense of the territory, its geological and cultural heritage, the development of local economic activities and the organization of awareness-raising and cooperation with other entities are central”, he concluded.

UNESCO atribuiu à Serra da Estrela estatuto de Geopark Mundial
Guarda, 03 set 2019 (Lusa) – A candidatura da Serra da Estrela a Geopark Mundial foi aprovada pela Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura (UNESCO) na 4.ª Sessão do Conselho de Geoparks Mundiais, realizada na Indonésia, foi hoje anunciado.
“A região da Serra da Estrela viu ontem [segunda-feira] aprovada pelo Conselho de Geoparks Mundiais da UNESCO a sua candidatura a Geopark Mundial e fica agora apenas a aguardar o parecer do Conselho Executivo da agência das Nações Unidas”, refere a Associação Geopark Estrela em comunicado hoje enviado à agência Lusa.
Segundo Joaquim Brigas, presidente da Associação Geopark Estrela e do Instituto Politécnico da Guarda (IPG), a aprovação da candidatura por parte da UNESCO “é o reconhecimento do potencial geológico do território e do seu património natural e cultural e, nessa medida, um primeiro passo para o desenvolvimento sustentável de toda a região da Estrela”.
“Um efeito natural deste primeiro passo será o aumento do potencial turístico, económico e social dos municípios que fazem parte do território. E, por conseguinte, o aumento da qualidade de vida das populações”, vaticina Joaquim Brigas.
A candidatura da Estrela a Geopark Mundial foi aprovada pela UNESCO na 4.ª Sessão do Conselho de Geoparks Mundiais, que decorreu em Gili, na Indonésia.
A Associação Geopark Estrela é composta por nove municípios dos distritos da Guarda, Castelo Branco e Coimbra (Belmonte, Celorico da Beira, Covilhã, Fornos de Algodres, Gouveia, Guarda, Manteigas, Oliveira do Hospital e Seia) e também pelo IPG e pela Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI).
A presidência da associação é assegurada pelo presidente do IPG, Joaquim Brigas, e a vice-presidência por José Páscoa Marques, vice-reitor da UBI.
“As duas instituições de ensino superior da região pretendem apostar na investigação científica para garantir o melhor conhecimento possível das características do território e as suas potencialidades geológicas e paisagísticas”, afirma Joaquim Brigas no comunicado hoje enviado à agência Lusa.
Segundo a nota, a formação de quadros especializados na preservação ecológica, proteção ambiental e na gestão do turismo são algumas das prioridades do IPG e da UBI.
“Pretendemos dar resposta às necessidades que precisam de ser colmatadas para conseguirmos manter a área da Serra Estrela protegida e fazermos um bom uso dos recursos disponíveis”, adianta.
O papel dos municípios da região também é destacado pelo presidente da Associação Geopark Estrela, ao afirmar que “o envolvimento de todos os municípios neste projeto, mais do que um pilar importante para o processo de candidatura progredir, foi primordial para o sucesso obtido”.
“E deve ser também destacado o trabalho da equipa executiva, sediada no Instituto Politécnico da Guarda, sem o qual este resultado não teria sido possível”, acrescenta.

Segundo Joaquim Brigas, a partir de agora, “só com um foco semelhante na divulgação do território, do seu património natural e dos seus produtos endógenos será possível continuar a contribuir para o desenvolvimento da Serra da Estrela”.
“A promoção, valorização e defesa do território, do seu património geológico e cultural, o desenvolvimento de atividades económicas locais e a organização de ações de sensibilização e de cooperação com outras entidades são fulcrais”, conclui.
