The last time a Portuguese Navy ship was in New York was in 1997, but on Sunday D. Francisco de Almeida celebrated its debut in one of the most important cities in the world, opening the doors to some Portuguese residents in the USA
“We haven’t had a Portuguese Navy ship since 1997 in New York, so [the meeting with the community] has a very particular symbolism, not only for the but also for these people, who are here and have the pleasure. to be treading national territory, ”
said Commander Ricardo José Gomes da Silva Inácio.
The Bartolomeu Dias class frigate, who arrived in the US on Friday, is part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) “Standing NATO Maritime Group 1” force and is on the course that began on August 1 and ends. on November 12th.
The reception to the community took place over four hours of conviviality, and some immigrants in the US were able to review family members, honor the Navy, and hear stories of the ship from all corners of the world.
Everything happened with the taste of Portuguese dishes and wines, the sound of fado and the view over the waters of Pier 88 of the New York Ship Terminal, from where D. Francisco de Almeida departs for Canada on Tuesday.
When NYPALC, an association of 69 Portuguese-American organizations in New York, learned that the D. Francisco de Almeida ship was stopping on the US east coast, it came up with the idea of bringing the Portuguese community together.
Isabelle Coelho-Marques, president of NYPALC and community representative, said that Portuguese immigrants in the United States feel “a sense of belonging” because they can be inside the frigate, which they consider a “Portuguese space in the host country.”
The association’s representative said the meeting was a “very symbolic and exciting” moment for immigrants.
“They often say that we are not immigrants, but we are Portuguese residing outside Portugal. I like the word ‘immigrant’ and I’m very proud of it, ”
explained Isabelle Coelho-Marques.
“Despite the distance, we have from Portugal, (…) after all, we are Portugal, even though we are far from our homeland, we live with excitement everything that happens,”
said the NYPALC representative.

Commander Ricardo Jose Gomes da Silva Inacio said: “The Portuguese Navy has 700 years of history, so we understand very well this surroundings and the dynamics that exist in Portuguese communities around the world.”
The Consulate of Portugal in New York and the Consulate General of Portugal in Newark help to plan meetings with the Sagres School Ship, but on this occasion, NATO authorization was required because the Portuguese frigate travels along with four ships from Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, USA
New York is part of a set of exercises and points of scale that the Navy does in the “Maritime Express 2019” plan which, according to the Portuguese commander, “have as their main objective to guarantee the operability and real-time capability” of the force — standing NATO Maritime Group 1 force.

Navio D.Francisco de Almeida recebe comunidade portuguesa em Nova Iorque
Nova Iorque, Estados Unidos, 02 set 2019 (Lusa) – O navio da Marinha Portuguesa D. Francisco de Almeida atracou no domingo à noite em Nova Iorque pela primeira vez na sua história e recebeu a bordo membros da comunidade portuguesa nos Estados Unidos da América.
A última vez que um navio da Marinha de Guerra Portuguesa esteve em Nova Iorque foi em 1997, mas no domingo o navio D. Francisco de Almeida celebrou a sua estreia numa das cidades mais importantes do mundo, abrindo as portas a alguns portugueses residentes nos EUA.
“Já não tínhamos um navio da Marinha de Guerra Portuguesa desde 1997 em Nova Iorque, portanto [o encontro com a comunidade] tem um simbolismo muito particular, não só para a guarnição, mas também para estas pessoas, que estão aqui e têm o prazer de estar a pisar território nacional”,
disse à Lusa o comandante Ricardo José Gomes da Silva Inácio.
A fragata, da classe Bartolomeu Dias, que chegou aos EUA na sexta-feira, está enquadrada na força “Standing NATO Maritime Group 1” da Organização do Tratado do Atlântico Norte (NATO) e está no percurso que começou a 01 de agosto e termina em 12 de novembro.
A receção à comunidade decorreu ao longo de quatro horas de convívio e alguns imigrantes nos EUA puderam rever familiares, homenagear a Marinha e ouvir histórias do navio, de todos os cantos do mundo.
Tudo aconteceu ao sabor de pratos e vinhos portugueses, ao som do fado e com a vista sobre as águas do Pier 88 do Terminal de Navios de Nova Iorque, de onde o D. Francisco de Almeida parte na terça-feira para o Canadá.
Quando a NYPALC, uma associação de 69 organizações luso-americanas em Nova Iorque, soube que o navio D. Francisco de Almeida parava na costa leste dos EUA, teve a ideia de juntar a comunidade portuguesa.
Isabelle Coelho-Marques, presidente da NYPALC e representante da comunidade, disse que os imigrantes portugueses nos Estados Unidos sentem “um sentimento de pertença” por poderem estar dentro da fragata, que consideram um “espaço português no país de acolhimento”.
A representante da associação disse que o encontro foi um momento “muito simbólico e emocionante” para os imigrantes.
“Costumam dizer que nós não somos imigrantes, mas somos portugueses a residirem fora de Portugal. Eu gosto da palavra ‘imigrante’ e tenho muito orgulho dela”,
explicou Isabelle Coelho-Marques.
“Apesar da distância que temos daqui a Portugal, (…) afinal de contas, nós somos Portugal, mesmo apesar de estar longe da pátria, vivemos com emoção tudo o que acontece”,
disse a representante da NYPALC.

O comandante Ricardo José Gomes da Silva Inácio sustentou: “A Marinha Portuguesa tem 700 anos de história, portanto nós compreendemos muito bem esta envolvência e esta dinâmica que existe nas comunidades portuguesas espalhadas pelo mundo”.
O Consulado de Portugal em Nova Iorque e o Consulado de Newark ajudam a programar encontros com o Navio Escola de Sagres, mas nesta ocasião, foi preciso autorização da NATO, porque a fragata portuguesa viaja junto com quatro navios da Bélgica, Holanda, Noruega, EUA.
Nova Iorque faz parte de um conjunto de exercícios e de pontos de escala que a Marinha faz no plano “Maritime Express 2019” e que, segundo o comandante português, “têm como grande objetivo garantir a operacionalidade e a capacidade em tempo real” da força de reação imediata da força “Standing NATO Maritime Group 1”.
