Angra do Heroísmo, Azores, June 20, 2019 (Lusa) – The Sanjoninas festivities, which run from Friday to June 30 in Angra do Heroísmo in the Azores, marks the 350th anniversary of the arrival of King Afonso VI, exile in Terceira island for five years.
“A land without history has no future. That is why we remember, and we will continue to remember our history for all those who visit us and for those who live here, so that in fact it will be remembered for all that we have played an important role in the national context,” said the vice president of the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, José Gaspar Lima, justifying the choice of the theme of this edition of the festas.
Dubbed “the victor,” for having won the wars of the Restoration and for having signed a peace treaty with Spain that guaranteed the independence of Portugal, D. Afonso VI was eventually removed from power for alleged inability to exercise and ensure the continuity of the royal lineage.
Between 1669 and 1674, he lived in exile in the Castle of St. John the Baptist, in Angra (which at the time did not yet have the title of Heroism), forbidden to contact foreign princes and leave Monte Brasil until, following an attempt of blow to regain the power, was shut down in the Palace of Sintra, where it died in 1983.
Although deprived of executive power, given to his brother, he always remained king until he died, being the first, recognized as such, to live in Angra do Heroísmo.
Hours before the official start of the Sanjoaninas celebrations, on Friday, the Angrenese municipality will inaugurate a statue in honor of D. Afonso VI, precisely in Monte Brasil.
The president of the Municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, Álamo Meneses justifies the distinction with the intention of recovering the memory of the king and of repositioning his image “now freed from the stigma that for so long has hovered over his figure.”
“We believe that 350 years later, Angra continues to be a community capable of welcoming all those who come for the good, in the diversity of their conditions and options. The statue of the king also celebrates this tolerance and hospitality, “says the author in the preface to the book” The Reign of King Afonso VI on Terceira Island (1669-1674) “, released this Friday with a text by journalist Armando Mendes and an excerpt from “Fénix Angrense” by Father Manuel Luís Maldonado, transcribed into current Portuguese by Sérgio Toste.
The exile of D. Afonso VI will also give the motto for the opening parade of the Sanjoaninas, one of the moments that attract more people to the city, during ten days of festivities, where musical spectacles, popular marches, bullfighting, handicrafts, exhibitions, sports activities, and gastronomy, among other initiatives.

On Saint John’s night, before the bonfires, 24 marches march through the main streets of the city, but the adhesion is so great that the next nine marches (five of children and four of adults) take the same route.
In addition to the marches on Terceira Island, there are six marches from other islands of the archipelago (from São Miguel, Faial, São Jorge, and Pico), one from Madeira and another from Viseu.
The main stage of the parties will include names like The Gipsy Kings, Ana Moura, Nego de Borel, David Carreira, Anjos, Os Quatro e Meia, and Jimmy P., but there are several stages throughout the city with free concerts, especially with local bands.
The municipality estimates that thousands of people, including hundreds of emigrants from the United States and Canada, will travel to Terceira Island at this time of year.
“Everyone has fun. In addition to listening to music, interacting with the population, living day-to-day with our residents, our culture, our tradition and what comes the first time, it will probably come second because [visitors] are astonished that what we do during these 10 days of parties in Angra do Heroísmo, “he said.
The feasts have a budget of 600 thousand euros, a figure that according to José Gaspar Lima has remained the same for several years.

Angra do Heroísmo, Açores, 20 jun 2019 (Lusa) – As festas Sanjoninas, que decorrem de sexta-feira a 30 de junho em Angra do Heroísmo, nos Açores, assinalam os 350 anos da chegada à cidade do rei D. Afonso VI, exilado na ilha Terceira durante cinco anos.
“Uma terra sem história não tem futuro. Por isso mesmo é que nós relembramos e continuaremos a relembrar a nossa história para todos aqueles que nos visitam e para os que aqui vivem, para que de facto fique na memória de todos que tivemos um papel importante no contexto nacional”, adiantou, em declarações à Lusa, o vice-presidente do município de Angra do Heroísmo, José Gaspar Lima, justificando a escolha do tema desta edição das festas.
Apelidado como “o vitorioso”, por ter vencido as guerras da Restauração e por ter assinado um tratado de paz com Espanha que garantiu a independência de Portugal, D. Afonso VI acabou por ser afastado do poder por alegada incapacidade de o exercer e de assegurar a continuidade da linhagem real.
Entre 1669 e 1674, viveu exilado no Castelo de São João Baptista, em Angra (que na altura ainda não tinha o título de Heroísmo), proibido de contactar com príncipes estrangeiros e de sair do Monte Brasil, até que, na sequência de uma tentativa de golpe para recuperar o poder, foi encerrado no Palácio de Sintra, onde veio a falecer em 1983.
Apesar de destituído de poder executivo, entregue ao irmão, manteve-se sempre como rei até morrer, sendo o primeiro, reconhecido como tal, a viver em Angra do Heroísmo.
Horas antes do arranque oficial das festas Sanjoaninas, na sexta-feira, o município angrense vai inaugurar uma estátua em homenagem de D. Afonso VI, precisamente no Monte Brasil.
O presidente da Câmara Municipal de Angra do Heroísmo, Álamo Meneses, justifica a distinção com a intenção de recuperar a memória do rei e de reposicionar a sua imagem “agora liberta do estigma que durante tanto tempo pairou sobre a sua figura”.
“Cremos que 350 anos depois, Angra continua a ser uma comunidade capaz de bem acolher todos os que vierem por bem, na diversidade das suas condições e opções. A estátua do rei também celebra essa tolerância e hospitalidade”, aponta o autarca no prefácio do livro “O Reinado de D. Afonso VI na Ilha Terceira (1669-1674)”, lançado esta sexta-feira, com um texto do jornalista Armando Mendes e um excerto da “Fénix Angrense”, do padre Manuel Luís Maldonado, transcrito para português atual por Sérgio Toste.
O exílio de D. Afonso VI dará também o mote para o desfile de abertura das Sanjoaninas, um dos momentos que mais gente atrai à cidade, durante 10 dias de festas, em que estão previstos espetáculos musicais, marchas populares, tauromaquia, artesanato, exposições, atividades desportivas e gastronomia, entre outras iniciativas.
Na noite de São João, antes dos saltos à fogueira, desfilam pelas principais ruas da cidade 24 marchas, mas a adesão é tanta que no dia seguinte outras nove marchas (cinco de crianças e quatro de adultos) fazem o mesmo percurso.
Para além das marchas da ilha Terceira, participam seis marchas de outras ilhas do arquipélago (de São Miguel, Faial, São Jorge e Pico), uma da Madeira e outra de Viseu.
Pelo palco principal das festas vão passar nomes como The Gipsy Kings, Ana Moura, Nego do Borel, David Carreira, Anjos, Os Quatro e Meia e Jimmy P., mas há vários palcos espalhados pela cidade com concertos gratuitos, sobretudo com bandas locais.
O município estima que se desloquem à ilha Terceira, por esta altura do ano, milhares de pessoas, incluindo centenas de emigrantes dos Estados Unidos e do Canadá.
“Todas as pessoas se divertem. Além de ouvirem a música, interagem com a população, vivem o dia-a-dia com os nossos residentes, com a nossa cultura, com a nossa tradição e o que vem a primeira vez, provavelmente virá a segunda, porque [os visitantes] ficam admiradíssimos com que aquilo que nós fazemos durante estes 10 dias de festas em Angra do Heroísmo”, salientou.
As festas têm um orçamento de 600 mil euros, um valor que segundo José Gaspar Lima se mantém igual há vários anos.
