Portuguese organizations in New York award Secretary of State for Communities

Organizações portuguesas de Nova Iorque premeiam Secretário de Estado das Comunidades Portuguesas

Nova Iorque, 12 mai 2019 (Lusa) – Uma associação de 68 organizações portuguesas do Estado de Nova Iorque, a NYPALC, atribuiu um prémio ao Secretário de Estado das Comunidades Portuguesas, José Luís Carneiro, pela presença ativa na vida da diáspora.

A presidente da NYPALC, Isabelle Coelho-Marques, disse à Lusa que a decisão foi unânime, porque o Secretário de Estado “está sempre disponível para ouvir a comunidade”. “Nós acreditamos, independentemente de opiniões partidárias, que o nosso Secretário de Estado das Comunidades Portuguesas tem sido bastante ativo nas comunidades, tem tido uma presença assídua. Sempre que precisamos de alguma coisa ele está sempre disponível para ouvir a comunidade”, disse a responsável.

A distinção da NYPALC foi atribuída durante a gala anual de prémios de liderança da comunidade luso-americana, realizada na noite de sábado (madrugada de domingo em Portugal) no Portuguese American Center of Suffolk, onde estiveram cerca de 600 pessoas. José Luís Carneiro, presente na cerimónia, saudou a iniciativa da NYPALC de juntar a comunidade de portugueses e lusodescendentes e o esforço da associação “para manter vivos os laços históricos” que ligam Portugal aos EUA e que se traduzem em “raízes de valores fundamentais” de liberdade, justiça e igualdade. O Secretário de Estado declarou que os cidadãos migrantes e diáspora portuguesa dão contributos de trabalho, de desenvolvimento e de solidariedade ao país de origem e aos países de acolhimento. O presidente honorário da sétima edição da gala de prémios da NYPALC, Miguel de Serpa Soares, subsecretário-geral da Organização das Nações Unidas para Assuntos Jurídicos, disse que a ocasião era uma celebração do “espírito de cooperação, compromisso e generosidade” que os portugueses tanto valorizam e levam “a todos os cantos do mundo”. “Esta tem sido a minha experiência em Portugal, na Bélgica, em vários sítios onde vivi e agora em Nova Iorque desde há seis anos como consultor jurídico das Nações Unidas. Tenho testemunhado muitas vezes o compromisso de Portugal e de todos os representantes com as iniciativas e processos que refletem as aspirações mais nobres da comunidade internacional”, continuou Miguel de Serpa Soares. Isabelle Coelho-Marques, que termina o mandato como presidente da associação em dezembro, fez um balanço à Lusa dos últimos anos, afirmando que a comunidade luso-americana “começou a unir-se” e está num “trajeto de unificação e de fortalecer a sua presença no estado de Nova Iorque”. “Eu herdei uma NYPALC com vinte e poucas organizações, neste momento somos 68. É algo que me dá uma grande satisfação”, disse Coelho-Marques, acrescentando que os membros trabalhavam antes “sozinhos e independentes” e agora funcionam “muito em conjunto”.

“Mas, claro, isto é um trabalho que tem de ser contínuo, nada disto é momentâneo, tem de ser continuado, tem de ser trabalhado e eu acredito que temos líderes na comunidade que estão à altura disso”, afirmou a responsável. A NYPALC, fundada em 1973, é uma associação sem fins lucrativos e sem filiações políticas e conta atualmente com 68 organizações como membros, que capacitam os cidadãos portugueses e lusodescendentes de Nova Iorque por meio de advocacia, participação cívica, desenvolvimento comunitário e educação.
