LOS ANGELES (Lusa) – The new film co-produced by Brad Pitt, “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” features the musical performance of Portugal’s Virginia Costa Figueiredo, a clarinetist based in Los Angeles.
The teacher, a doctorate in clarinet, recorded the song for the film, which will be presented at the Sundance festival on January 26.
The opportunity arose as a result of “networking with musicians and composers” that is fostered by the strong presence of the film industry in Los Angeles, explained Virginia Costa Figueiredo, who has lived in California for 16 years.
With Joe Talbot’s performance, “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” is produced by Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner, reuniting the producers responsible for “Moonlight”, winner of the Oscar for Best Picture in 2017. It is inspired by true story of Jimmie Fails and features actors Jonathan Majors, Danny Glover, Thora Birch, and Mike Epps.
“Los Angeles is a city with a very active industry for freelance musicians,” said the Portuguese, noting that “there is a lot of work that is not found in other places” and this has been reflected in the opportunities. The clarinetist works with companies that “employ musicians specifically to do this type of work” and intends to increase this component of her career.
Last year she recorded music for other films, including Ziyi Zheng’s “Hator” and the Japanese anime film “Circus Sam,” as well as several documentary series.
The industry’s dynamism also led her to take part in Alan Parsons’ new album, the first since 2004 and which will be released earlier this year. In 2018, Virginia Figueiredo also worked on an album by Chance the Rapper.
The artist prepares to launch her own album at the end of January, “Intuición”, performed in clarinet and piano and inspired by Latin American folk music.
Another project that is underway is the creation of an instruction book for elementary school students based on Portuguese popular music, “which is something that has never been done”. At this moment, Virginia Figueiredo is collecting the songs “to be transcribed as clarinet learning exercises”, targeting students in the schools of Portugal and Brazil.
At age 39, the Portuguese artist is a professor at Pierce College, Cerritos College, and Moorpark College and plays with the Pacific Opera Project, whose season will begin in February.
Virginia Figueiredo is a regular presence at events in the Portuguese community in California, especially when there are musical performances involved, but points out that there is little “Portuguese networking” compared to what is done in other immigrant communities.
It is a problem that derives from the smaller number of Portuguese and Luso-descendants, and which sharpens the differences between American and Portuguese society, which assumes “a very different attitude towards family and friends”, since the Americans “are very independent” and have a “somewhat solitary existence”.
The clarinetist, who arrived in Los Angeles in 2003 as a Gulbenkian Master’s degree student, does not set aside a return to Portugal “with the right opportunity,” but says that so far “nothing has come up that would have worked.”
Virginia Figueiredo turned out to be “the first Portuguese person to obtain a doctorate in clarinet”, at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) and stayed because “there are more opportunities, definitely”.

A clarinetista trabalha com empresas que “empregam músicos especificamente para fazer esse tipo de trabalho” e pretende aumentar esta componente da sua carreira.
No ano passado, gravou música para outros filmes, incluindo “Hator” de Ziyi Zheng e o filme ‘anime’ japonês “Circus Sam”, além de várias séries documentais.
O dinamismo da indústria também a levou a participar no novo álbum de Alan Parsons, o primeiro desde 2004 e que será lançado no início deste ano. Em 2018, Virginia Figueiredo trabalhou ainda num álbum de Chance the Rapper.

Neste momento, Virginia Figueiredo está a recolher as músicas “para depois transcrever como exercícios de aprendizagem de clarinete”, tendo como alvo alunos nas escolas de Portugal e do Brasil.

A clarinetista, que chegou a Los Angeles em 2003 como bolseira de Mestrado pela Gulbenkian, não põe de parte um regresso a Portugal “com a oportunidade certa”, mas refere que até agora “não surgiu nada que tivesse funcionado”.
Virginia Figueiredo acabou por ser “a primeira pessoa portuguesa a obter um doutoramento em clarinete”, na UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles), e ficou porque “há mais oportunidades, definitivamente”.[/accordion]
