Conhecida como a primeira festa do verão, a Festa da Santíssima Trindade, é uma das tradições portuguesas da cidade de Lowell, MA, que se realizou nos dias 26, 27 e 28 de maio. Este evento de três dias reuniu jovens e idosos à volta da tão popular celebração religiosa.
Falamos com Avlynn Calheta, que é a atual presidente da organização da Santissima Trindade. A jovem presidente nasceu nos EUA, está casada há menos de um ano com Ivan Calheta, de São Miguel, a mãe é natural da Covilhã, e o pai é natural da Graciosa.
Tenho um casal na minha direção que nunca estiveram envolvidos, e eles hoje olharam para mim e disseram-me, que não se apercebiam quanto trabalho dava organizar a festa. Como resultado, eles passaram a apreciar melhor esta festa.” Disse-nos Avlynn Calheta.
É reconfortante ver as gerações mais jovens darem continuidade às tradições portuguesas, a atual direção de 15 membros é composta principalmente por jovens que trabalham lado a lado com os mais veteranos que fornecem a orientação que tem como base a experiência.
“Tenho um casal na minha direção que nunca estiveram envolvidos, e hoje eles olharam para mim e disseram-me, que não se apercebiam quanto trabalho dava organizar a festa. Como resultado, eles passaram a apreciar melhor esta festa.” Disse-nos Avlynn Calheta.
Avlynn fica triste ao saber que algumas organizações antigas estão a desaparecer lentamente e está determinada a não deixar que isso aconteça. Ela tem lembranças maravilhosas de sua infância quando tinha seis, sete anos de idade e participava nas festas de Lowell onde via tantas pessoas a celebrar como se fossem sardinhas enlatadas.
Questionada sobre o que pretende fazer para envolver mais pessoas? Ela disse: “Apenas pergunto às pessoas se elas querem fazer parte da direção e isso tem sido o suficiente, tenho estado envolvida nisto desde que era criança e era algo que sempre desejava fazer. Muitas pessoas não se apercebem do trabalho que dá. ”
Este ano, havia cerca de 30 pares de crianças no concurso tradicional, a princesa e o príncipe vencedores foram a Christina e o Justin ambos com oito anos de idade.
Famílias e amigos dos membros do direção também se oferecem para ajudar a concretizar este evento, incluindo alguns famíliares da Avlynn que a visitavam de Port St Lucy, na Flórida, e que ficaram em Lowell por mais de uma semana para ajudar no banquete.
A mão direita de Avlynn na cozinha é a Senhora Leocadia, que lhe tem ensinado imenso, “só esta semana aprendi muitas coisas, agora entendo o que é preciso para por tudo isto em prática,” disse Avlynn.

Leocadia Sousa nasceu em São Jorge e veio para Lowell há cerca de 44 anos, é diretora da Santissima Trindade há três anos, e esteve na direção do Lowell Holy Ghost entre 1996 e 2014.
Leocadia aprendeu a fazer malassadas no Campo do Espírito Santo em Lowell há muitos anos e agora é consierada profissional na receita. Ela inicialmente começou como ajudante lançando a massa enquanto fritava, ao longo do tempo aprendeu com os outros e hoje conhece cada passo do processo desde fazer a massa até que esteja frita. Leocadia é uma das veteranas entre muitos rostos jovens da organização Santissima Trindade.

Os destaques dos festejos deste ano foram: O desfile tradicional – Bodo de Leite no sábado à tarde que começou na Crosby Street até a Central Street e terminou no Portuguese American Civic (PAC – Blues Club) onde foi servido pão doce, queijo, leite e vinho. À noite, a música para dançar ficou a cargo da Band Faith. No domingo, a festa continuou com a missa e a procissão. À tarde, ouve um concerto realizado pela Filarmônica de Trindade de Lowell, na Sociedade do Espírito Santo, e à noite a música para dançar com a atuação do grupo musical Edge. As festividades terminaram na segunda-feira, dia 28, com o grupo musical Som Atlântico.

A irmandade foi encontrada por um grupo de paroquianos portugueses, após a descoberta de uma antiga bandeira e uma coroa que continha as inscrições da Trindade, num anexo junto à Igreja de Santo Antônio de Lowell, igreja da Santíssima Trindade. O número atual de membros é de aproximadamente 320, a maioria deles são membros com raizes Açoreanas. A maioria dos membros da irmandade vem da Ilha Terceira, mas também há membros da Graciosa, São Jorge e Faial. A Irmandade organiza muitas atividades de angariação de fundos durante o ano, sendo a mais importante, o jantar para o príncipe e a princesa da festa, seis semanas antes da festa da Trindade.

Known as the first feast of the summer, The Festa da Santíssima Trindade, a Portuguese tradition in Lowell, MA took place on May 26, 27 and 28. The three-day event brought together young and old to celebrate.
Feel Portugal in The USA magazine spoke with Avlynn Calheta, President of the Santissima Trindade organization. The young president was born in the US and she has been married for less than one year to Ivan Calheta, from Sao Miguel. Her mother is from Covilhã, Portugal and her father from Graciosa, Azores.
I have a couple on my board that has never done this and today they just looked at me and said they did not realize how much work goes into it. As a result, they developed a new appreciation for the feast. Said Avlynn Calheta.
Avlynn Calheta, president of the Santissima Trindade organization, is 26 years old and was born in the US. She has been married for less than one year to Ivan Calheta, from Sao Miguel. Her mother is from Covilhã, and her father from Graciosa.
It’s heartwarming to see a younger generation providing continuity to Portuguese traditions. The current board of 15 members is composed mostly of younger members working alongside with veteran members who provide the guidance that only comes from experience.
“I have a couple on my board that has never done this and today they just looked at me and said they did not realize how much work goes into it,” said Avlynn Calheta. As a result “they developed a new appreciation for the feast”.
It saddens Avlynn to see some old established organizations slowly die and she is determined not to let it happen. She has wonderful memories, from her childhood, of coming to Lowell feasts, when she was only six years old, and seeing “so many people packed like sardines.” said Avlynn.
When we asked Avlynn what is being done to get more people involved in theHoly Trinity Feast, she said: “Just asking people if they want to be part of the board is all it takes. I have been involved in this ever since I was a child and it was something that I always looked forward to doing” She then went on to say: “A lot of people don’t realize the work that has gone into it.”
This year there were about 30 pairs of children in the traditional pageant. The princess and prince title winners, both around eight years of age, were: Christina and Justin.
Families and friends of board members also volunteer to help make the event happen. Even some of Avlynn’s family members, who were visiting from Port St Lucy in Florida, stayed in Lowell an extra week to help her with the feast.
The right hand in the kitchen is Senhora Leocadia. Avlynn said ” I learned so much from this lady. Just this week I’ve learned so many things. I now understand what it takes to make them happen.”
Leocadia Sousa was born in São Jorge and came to Lowell some 44 years ago and has been one of the directors on the board of Santissima Trindade board for three years. She previously served on the Lowell Holy Ghost board in 1996 and 2014.

Leocadia learned how to make malassadas (Portuguese donuts) at the Holy Ghost Field in Lowell many years ago. She is now a pro at it. Initially starting as a helper, flipping the dough as it fried, she then learned from others as she went along, Today she knows every step of the process of making the dough until it is ready to be eaten. Leocadia is one of the veterans among many youthful faces in the Santissima Trindade organization.

This year’s festivity highlights were: The traditional parade – Bodo de Leite on Saturday afternoon which started at Crosby Street to Central Street and ended at Portuguese American Civic (PAC – Blues Club) where free sweet bread, cheese, milk, and wine was served. At night there was music for dancing was performed by Band Faith. On Sunday the feast continued with Mass and Procession. In the afternoon a concert at the Holy Ghost Society was performed by the Trindade Philarmonic Band of Lowell, and at night there was music for dancing performed by the musical group Edge. The festivities ended on Monday the 28th with the musical group Som Atlântico.

About The Brotherhood:
The brotherhood was found by a group of Portuguese parishioners, after the discovery of an old flag and a crown that had the inscriptions of the Trinity, in an outbuilding next to the Church of St. Anthony of Lowell, a church of the Holy Trinity. The current number of members is approximately 320, most of them are members in relation to the Azores. The majority of the members of the brotherhood come from Terceira Island, but there are also members from Graciosa, São Jorge, and Faial. The Brotherhood organize many fundraising activities during the year, with the most important one, the dinner for the prince and princess of the Feast, six weeks before the feast of the Trinity.
