A Massachuesets Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) teve no dia 28 de abril, uma excitante noite de Gala, com prémios inspiradores, entretenimento cultural, chegada de glamour em tapete vermelho, leilão silencioso, sorteios e um banquete elegante que ajudaram esta organização sem frins lucrastivos a arrecadar quase US $ 200 mil na sua Gala anual.
Este ano a MAPS entregou o prémio Personalidade do Ano ao Secretário-Geral das Nações Unidas, António Guterres, em reconhecimento pela sua excelente carreira diplomática e política e pela sua dedicação aos direitos e dignidade dos imigrantes e refugiados. O Secretário-Geral Guterres esteve representado neste evento por Miguel de Serpa Soares, subsecretário-geral das Nações Unidas para Assuntos Jurídicos.
Em mensagem de vídeo gravada, o Secretário-Geral saudou os mais de 420 convidados, líderes comunitários e empresariais e dignitários públicos que participaram do evento e agradeceu a MAPS pelo reconhecimento. “Muitas pessoas, especialmente aquelas que mais precisam, beneficiam do apoio e aconselhamento que a MAPS oferece, fazendo a diferença na vida de muitas pessoas”, disse Guterres. “O apoio da MAPS também contribui para a integração de muitos membros das comunidades imigrantes de língua portuguesa na sociedade americana. Por isso, quero elogiar o trabalho admirável realizado pela MAPS e deixar uma mensagem de apoio para que continuem com seu trabalho, o que mostra claramente que podemos transformar, para melhor, as comunidades em que vivemos. ”
Regina Rodrigues, uma brasileira que se voluntariou por muitos anos com os serviços de HIV / STI da MAPS, foi agraciada com o Prêmio MAPS Voluntário de Excelência de Manuel N. Coutinho. Por oito anos, Regina ofereceu o seu tempo para colaborar com os Educadores de Saúde da MAPS no fornecimento de testes gratuitos de HIV / IST e informações sobre o programa para centenas de clientes com quem ela interage no nightclub de Boston onde trabalha.
“Quero agradecer à MAPS por esse reconhecimento e por me dar a oportunidade de ajudar a nossa comunidade”, disse Regina emocionda ao receber seu prêmio.
Fernando Castro, o proprietário brasileiro da Income Tax Plus, Inc., com sede em Framingham, foi homenageado com o prémio MAPS Álvaro Lima Outstanding Business Award. Um representante perfeito da história de imigrante de sucesso, o generoso filantropo apoia várias organizações comunitárias e é membro co-fundador do Digaaí, um espaço cultural em Boston dedicado a preservar e promover a cultura brasileira.
“Quero dizer aos mais jovens, aqui nesta noite que podem ganhar todo o dinheiro do mundo, mas esse dinheiro só vale algo quando vocês retribuirem à comunidade”, disse Castro, relembrando a sua própria experiência de imigrante e os desafios que teve que superar. “Quando as pessoas dizem que não acreditam que os imigrantes pagam os seus impostos, peçam para falarem comigo”, brincou.
Osvalda Rodrigues, MA, imigrante portuguesa de São Miguel, Açores, recebeu o prémio MAPS Mary & Manuel Rogers Lifetime Community Service, em reconhecimento dos seus 13 anos de trabalho extraordinário com a MAPS como diretora de vários programas desta organização, e o seu profundo compromisso de ajudar as comunidades de língua portuguesa. Ela foi fundamental no crescimento dos serviços de Apoio à Família e Violência Doméstica na MAPS, e também responsável por adicionar os tão necessários serviços de apoio às vitimas de Agressão Sexual – criando na comunidade o único programa de apoio às vitimas de Violência Doméstica e Agressão Sexual que atende imigrantes no Estado.
“Estou feliz, humilde e honrada por receber este prêmio esta noite”, disse Rodrigues. “Eu quero dar uma grande saudação a todos os outros premiados nesta noite. Cada um deles deu uma incrível contribuição às nossas comunidades, e estamos todos muito orgulhosos disso. Estou orgulhosa e feliz em dizer que faço parte da família MAPS.”
O Prêmio Serviço Comunitário Jorge Fidalgo da MAPS foi entregue ao Doutor Lourenço Garcia, Diretor da Revere High School. Desde que assumiu o cargo de diretor, Garcia liderou a transformação da Revere High School de uma boa escola que o estado chamou de “baixo desempenho” para uma que ganhou prêmios educacionais nacionais – incluindo o 2014 High School Gold Award do National Center for Urban School Transformation. um ranking de prata da pesquisa do US News and World sobre as melhores escolas de ensino médio dos Estados Unidos e muito mais. Imigrante cabo-verdiano, da ilha do Fogo, Garcia recordou à audiência que “nenhum ser humano é ilegal”. Invocando a dedicação de Jorge Fidalgo aos direitos dos imigrantes e à comunidade de língua portuguesa, Garcia referiu que “há uma coisa que define todos nós imigrantes – o que chamamos de ‘resiliência’. Nós nunca desistimos.”
O Diretor Executivo da MAPS Paulo Pinto e a Presidente da Assembleia Geral, Paula Coutinho deram os parabéns a todos os homenageados e agradeceram especialmente a todos os funcionários, membros da Direção, patrocinadores de empresas, patrocinadores média, anunciantes, doadores, convidados e artistas que fizeram da Gala um grande sucesso.
“Eu vejo nossos patrocinadores e generosos doadores aqui esta noite, muitos dos quais são imigrantes ou filhos de imigrantes, que compartilham com a MAPS os frutos de seu trabalho duro e sucesso para que possamos ajudar os outros a construir uma vida melhor livre de violência, abuso, negligência. , solidão, depressão e pobreza ”, disse Pinto. “Espero que você também se sinta inspirado e que essa inspiração continue a nos motivar a tornar este mundo um lugar melhor – ele está ao nosso alcance. A Gala dos Prêmios MAPS 2018 foi novamente patrocinada ao mais alto nível pelos empresários da cadeia Dunkin ‘Donuts, como a Apres Management Group (família Serpa), Cafua Management Group (família Cafua), Couto Management Group (família Couto) e Riverside Management Group (famílias Carvalho e Rodrigues ), e este ano contou com o novo empresário da cadeia Dunkin ‘Donuts, o Sardinha Family Trust, representado por Fernando Sardinha.
Desde o seu Tapete Vermelho “paparazzi” até à sua cerimónia de entrega de prémios, a Gala tevei uma noite festiva pontuada com entretenimento do mundo de língua portuguesa. Os distintos convidados, incluindo os Cônsules do Brasil, Cabo Verde e Portugal, membros da extensa família da MAPS e apoiadores das comunidades empresarial e profissional, foram recebidos pelos ritmos e sons calorosos do Brasil, Portugal e Cabo Verde. da banda local Spencer & Band, enquanto tomavam seus lugares para jantar no elegante salão do Royal Sonesta Hotel.
Após a cerimónia de entrega de prémios, os convidados puderam dançar na festa pós-festa de gala que durou até a meia-noite, com a musica do premiado DJ Melo e da restante equipa Melo Musik.

An exciting evening of inspiring award recipients, cultural entertainment, glamorous red carpet arrival, silent auction and a grand raffle, and an elegant banquet helped the Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) raise nearly $200,000 at the nonprofit organization’s 2018 Awards Gala in Cambridge on April 28th
MAPS presented its Person of the Year Award to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, in recognition of his outstanding diplomatic and political career and his life of dedication to immigrant and refugee rights and dignity. Secretary-General Guterres was represented at the event by Miguel de Serpa Soares, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs.
In a recorded video message, the Secretary-General greeted the more than 420 community and business leaders and public dignitaries who attended the event and thanked MAPS for the recognition. “Many people, particularly those who need it the most, have benefited from the support and advice that MAPS provides, which makes a difference in the lives of so many people”, said Guterres. “MAPS’ support contributes as well to the integration of many members of the immigrant Portuguese-speaking communities in American society. Therefore, I want to commend the admirable work carried out by MAPS and leave a message of support so that they carry on with their work, which clearly shows that we can transform, for the better, the communities in which we live.”
Regina Rodrigues, a Brazilian-American who has volunteered for many years with the MAPS HIV/ STI Services, was awarded the MAPS Manuel N. Coutinho Outstanding Volunteer Award. For eight years, Regina has volunteered her time to collaborate with MAPS Health Educators in providing outreach, free HIV/STI testing, and information about the program to the hundreds of clients she interacts with at the Boston nightclub where she works.
“I want to thank MAPS for this recognition, and for giving me the opportunity to help our community,” said an emotional Regina, as she received her award.
Fernando Castro, the Brazilian owner of Framingham-based Income Tax Plus, Inc., was honored with the MAPS Alvaro Lima Outstanding Business Award. A perfect representative of the immigrant success story, the generous philanthropist, and supporter of several community-based organizations is also a co-founding member of Digaaí, a cultural space in Boston dedicated to preserving and promoting Brazilian culture.
“I want to tell the younger people here tonight that you can make all the money in the world, but that money is only worth something when you give back to the community,” said Castro, recalling his own immigrant experience and the challenges he had to overcome. “When people say to you that they don’t believe that immigrants pay their taxes, ask them to talk to me,” he joked.
Osvalda Rodrigues, MA, a Portuguese immigrant from São Miguel, Azores, received the MAPS Mary & Manuel Rogers Lifetime Community Service Award, in recognition of the 13 years of outstanding work with MAPS as a Director of several of the organization’s programs, and her deep commitment to helping the Portuguese-speaking communities. She was also instrumental in growing both Family Support and Domestic Violence services at MAPS, and she was responsible for adding much-needed Sexual Assault services as well—creating the state’s only linguistically and culturally competent, dual Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault program serving an immigrant community.
“I am happy, humbled and honored to receive this award tonight,” said Rodrigues. “I want to give a big salute to all the other award recipients this evening. Each one of them has made an incredible contribution to our communities, and we are very proud of that. I’m proud and happy to say that I am part of the MAPS family.”
The MAPS Jorge Fidalgo Community Service Award was presented to Doctor Lourenço Garcia, Principal of the Revere High School. Since taking over as Principal, Garcia led Revere High School’s transformation from a good school that the state called “low-performing,” to one that won national educational awards—including the 2014 High School Gold Award from the National Center for Urban School Transformation, a Silver ranking from U.S. News and World report’s survey of best U.S. high schools, and more.
A Cabo-Verdean immigrant himself, from the island of Fogo, Garcia reminded the audience that “no human being is illegal.” Invoking Jorge Fidalgo’s dedication to immigrant rights and the Portuguese-speaking community, Garcia noted that “there is one thing that defines all of us immigrants – it’s called ‘resilience’. We never give up.”
Executive Director Paulo Pinto and Board President Paula Coutinho congratulated all the honorees and gave special thanks to all the staff, Board members, business sponsors, media sponsors, advertisers, donors, guests and entertainers who made the Gala a great success.
“I see our sponsors and generous donors here tonight, many of whom are immigrants or children of immigrants, who share with MAPS the fruits of their hard work and success so that we can help others build a better life free from violence, abuse, neglect, loneliness, depression, and poverty,” said Pinto. “I hope that you too feel inspired and that this inspiration continues to motivate us to make this world a better place – it’s within our reach. We all can volunteer, make a donation, small or large, be kind and helpful to others, vote, run for office, use our success to create opportunities for others – and guess what, we are already doing it. So please, let us continue to spread this inspiration.”
The MAPS 2018 Awards Gala was once more sponsored at the highest level by Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees Apres Management Group (Serpa family), Cafua Management Group (Cafua family), Couto Management Group (Couto family) and Riverside Management Group (Carvalho and Rodrigues families), who were joined this year by a new Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee, the Sardinha Family Trust, represented by Fernando Sardinha.
From its “paparazzi”-lined Red Carpet to its awards ceremony, the black-tie-optional Gala was a festive evening punctuated with entertainment from the Portuguese-speaking world. Distinguished guests, including the Boston area Consuls of Brazil, Cabo Verde, and Portugal, members of the extended MAPS “family” and supporters from the business and professional communities, were greeted by the warm rhythms and sounds of Brazil, Portugal, and Cabo Verde performed by local band Spencer & Band, as they took their seats for dinner in the elegant Royal Sonesta Hotel’s ballroom.
Following the Awards ceremony, guests got to show off their dance moves at the Gala’s after party that ran until midnight under the command of award-winning DJ Melo and the rest of the Melo Musik team.
