[accordion title=”Artigo em Português” load=”hide”]O Fundo de Bolsas de Estudo Dr. Edward Leitão está agora aceitando candidaturas para bolsas de estudo destinadas a estudantes de medicina e médicos em treino Luso-Americanos, no seguimento do objetivo de colmatar a necessidade na comunidade de profissionais de saúde falantes de Português. Este é o segundo ano em que duas bolsas de estudo são disponibilizadas, desta vez no valor de $2000 cada, e a data limite para as candidaturas é 15 de dezembro, 2017, às 5 da tarde (hora de Boston).

Os candidatos deverão enviar uma carta de apresentação endereçada ao Dr. Edward Leitão Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee, descrevendo a sua relação linguística e cultural com a comunidade Luso-Americana e como pretendem fazer a diferença junto da comunidade, quando se tornarem médicos. Aos candidatos é também pedido que disponibilizem o valor médio obtido na Universidade e Escola de Medicina, bem como histórico escolar (Undergraduate and Medical School GPA’s with transcripts); valores do MCAT e USMLE, se aplicável, bem como duas cartas de recomendação de docentes da escola de Medicina que frequentam.

O fundo foi criado em 2015 em nome do muito respeitado médico, que faleceu no dia 4 de fevereiro de 2015, após uma batalha de oito anos com o cancro (câncer). O Dr. Leitão serviu a comunidade na Cambridge Health Alliancedurante várias décadas, enquanto Médico Internista e Diretor Clínico, cuidando de muitos pacientes da comunidade de Cambridge e arredores.

O fundo é gerido pela Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) e mais informação pode ser obtida em www.maps-inc.org.O Comité Consultivo anunciará os candidatos vencedores no final de dezembro e entregará as bolsas de estudo num evento de solidariedade que está sendo planeado para janeiro de 2018. The Dr. Edward Leitão Memorial Scholarship Fund is now accepting applications for scholarships from Portuguese-American medical students and physicians in training, following the fund’s goal of filling the need among the community for Portuguese-speaking medical professionals. This is the second year that the scholarships are being offered, this time up to two scholarships of $2,000 each, and the deadline for submission of applications is December 15, 2017, at 5PM EST.

To be considered for these scholarships, applicants are required to submit a cover Letter addressed to Dr. Edward Leitão Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee, describing their language and cultural connections to the Portuguese-American community and how they envision making a difference in this community once they become doctors. Students are also required to submit Undergraduate and Medical School GPA’s with transcripts; MCAT and USMLE score reports, as applicable, along with two Letters of Recommendation from medical school or residency faculty.

This Scholarship Fund was created in 2015 in the name of the much-loved and highly respected physician, who passed away after an eight-year struggle with cancer on February 4, 2015.  Dr. Leitão served at the Cambridge Health Alliance for several decades as a well-respected internist and medical director, caring for many patients in the Portuguese-speaking community of the Cambridge area. The Fund is managed by the Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) and more information is available at maps-inc.org.
