Two of the brightest voices in Portuguese fado, the award-winning singers Joana Amendoeira and Duarte, will perform on November 3, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. at Durgin Hall at UMass Lowell.

Joana Amendoeira’s ninth CD, “Muito Depois” (Long After), explores the deepest traditions of fado—a music form recently recognized by UNESCO for its cultural uniqueness—through contemporary lyrics that speak to the rhythms of love and loss. Duarte’s third CD, “Sem Dor Nem Piedade” (Without Pain or Pity), has drawn broad acclaim for its exploration of fado’s darker subtexts paired with a steadfast belief in the human spirit. Individually, their music has been featured in the New York Times, the UK’s Guardian newspaper, on National Public Radio and Public Radio International, as well as in many international outlets. Both artists have garnered numerous awards, including recognition from Portugal’s prestigious Amália Rodrigues Foundation, and have performed extensively in Europe and elsewhere. This will be Joana Amendoeira’s debut East Coast performance.

Joana Amendoeira’s breakthrough 2003 album “Joana Amendoeira” brought her wide-scale recognition from critics and audiences. She toured nationally and internationally, including concerts in Holland, Spain, France and Austria. Two years (and two albums) later, she performed at some of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls, including in London’s Royal Opera House and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. In 2008, her CD “Joana Amendoeira & Mar Ensemble” won the Amália Foundation’s prize for Best Fado Album of 2008. Subsequent recordings, including the landmark 2012 release, “Amor Mais Perfeito” (A More Perfect Love), demonstrate her unbridled joy in fado and the abiding affection she feels for her audiences. London’s Guardian newspaper has highlighted both her “vocal command” and the “exceptional conviction” she brings “to these sad old songs.” As Joana herself said to the New York Times, “Like a lot of people I’ve got one foot in the past and one in the future, because I think that’s the best place to be.”

With the release of his latest album, “Sem Dor Nem Piedade” (Without Pain or Pity), Duarte has cemented his reputation as a living connection to fado’s roots as a music of Lisbon’s streets and alleyways. Like Joana Amendoeira, Duarte honed his craft and developed his musical sensibility through many nights performing at some of Lisbon’s most storied fado houses. Trained as a therapist, he knows all too well the deep secrets and unspoken emotions between lovers past and present. The lyrics of his latest recording, all written by Duarte himself, burst with urgency and passion as he leads us late at night through Lisbon’s dark and windy streets.

Joana Amendoeira and Duarte wil be accompanied by Pedro Amendoeira on the 12-string Portuguese guitar and Tiago Silva on the classical guitar.
