Boston, US, 12, Feb (Lusa) – The President of the Government of the Azores, Vasco Cordeiro, is in the United States, where he inaugurates an academic institute and visits Azorean communities in California, dividing the visit between “institutional contacts” and “affectionate”.

“At this moment we are pursuing work to give practical consistency in the field of political relationship, but also in the economic and effective relationship with this state [California] that has a very large community of the Azores and descendants,” said the Azorean chief executive on Sunday evening.

Vasco Cordeiro was speaking to journalists in Boston, on a stopover between Ponta Delgada and California, where an official visit begins Friday. This will be an “opportunity to develop institutional contacts”, with the “desire to strengthen the link between the Azores and California” as a background, assured Vasco Cordeiro who will address the “Azores today” to the descendants and Azoreans residing in the localities through which the governmental and parliamentary delegation will visit.

Vasco Cordeiro presided at the inauguration of the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute on Wednesday, at the invitation of the president of the University of California, to promote Portuguese culture and Portuguese, with a special focus on the Azorean diaspora.

After the institute’s inauguration, headed by university professor Diniz Borges, a native of Terceira island, the president of the Regional Government gives the inaugural lecture, under the theme “The Azores in the XXI Century”, under the ‘Speakers Series’ an initiative that includes a series of lectures by speakers invited by the institute.

Today, upon arrival in California, Vasco Cordeiro will meet with the state’s deputy governor, Eleni Kounalakis, and meet with leaders of the Sacramento community.

On Tuesday, the governor visits two farms belonging to the agricultural sector, owned by Azorean emigrants, followed by a meeting with the community at the Casa dos Açores de Hilmar.

After the day at the institute, a meeting with Artesia mayor, Tony Lima, as well as with the Azorean community in the Los Angeles area and a session promoted by the Azores Business Development Society (SDEA) in Los Angeles on opportunities for foreign investment in the region.

On Friday, the last day of the visit, the program includes a meeting with the mayor of San Diego, Kevin Faulconer, a visit to the memorial in honor of the tuna fishermen, activity with great connection to the Azorean emigration, a tribute to the emigrants Azoreans from San Diego and a meeting with the resident community in this area of California.

According to official data, the population of Portuguese origin in California is about 345 thousand people, estimated that about 70% come from the Azores.

During this official visit, the President of the Government of the Azores will be accompanied by the regional secretary responsible for External Relations, Rui Bettencourt, and PS and PSD deputies to the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

Also included in the program are visits to the Azorean communities of the cities of Sacramento, Hilmar, Fresno, Artesia, and San Diego.

Visita aos EUA significativa a nível institucional e afetuosa – Vasco Cordeiro

Boston, Estados Unidos, 11 fev (Lusa) – O presidente do Governo dos Açores, Vasco Cordeiro, encontra-se nos Estados Unidos, onde inaugura um instituto académico e visita comunidades açorianas na Califórnia, dividindo a visita entre “contactos institucionais” e “afetuosos”.

“Prosseguimos neste momento um trabalho de dar consistência prática no domínio do relacionamento político, mas também no relacionamento económico e afetivo com este estado [Califórnia] que tem uma larguíssima comunidade dos Açores e de descendentes”, vincou no domingo à noite o chefe do executivo açoriano.

Vasco Cordeiro falava aos jornalistas em Boston, numa escala entre Ponta Delgada e a Califórnia, onde arranca hoje uma visita oficial que dura até sexta-feira.

Esta será uma “oportunidade de desenvolver contactos institucionais”, com o “desejo do fortalecimento da ligação entre os Açores e a Califórnia” como pano de fundo, garantindo Vasco Cordeiro que irá abordar os “Açores de hoje” aos descendentes e açorianos que residam nas localidades por onde passará a comitiva governamental e parlamentar.

Vasco Cordeiro preside na quarta-feira, e a convite do presidente da Universidade da Califórnia, à inauguração do instituto Portuguese Beyond Borders, que se destina a promover a cultura e a língua portuguesa, com um foco especial na diáspora açoriana.

Após a inauguração do instituto, que tem como diretor o professor universitário Diniz Borges, natural da ilha Terceira, o presidente do Governo Regional profere a aula inaugural, subordinada ao tema “Os Açores no Século XXI”, no âmbito do ‘Speakers Series’, iniciativa que inclui um conjunto de palestras por oradores convidados pelo instituto.

Hoje, na chegada à Califórnia, Vasco Cordeiro terá uma reunião com a vice-governadora desse Estado, Eleni Kounalakis, encontrando-se depois com líderes da comunidade açoriana de Sacramento.

Na terça-feira, o governante visita duas explorações do setor agrícola, propriedade de emigrantes açorianos, seguindo-se um encontro com a comunidade na Casa dos Açores de Hilmar.

Depois do dia no instituto, está previsto para quinta-feira um encontro com o autarca (‘mayor’) de Artesia, Tony Lima, assim como com a comunidade açoriana da área de Los Angeles e uma sessão promovida pela Sociedade de Desenvolvimento Empresarial dos Açores (SDEA) em Los Angeles sobre as oportunidades de investimento externo na região.

Na sexta-feira, último dia da visita, o programa inclui um encontro com o ‘mayor’ de San Diego, Kevin Faulconer, uma visita ao memorial em honra dos pescadores de atum, atividade com grande ligação à emigração açoriana, uma homenagem aos emigrantes açorianos de San Diego e um encontro com a comunidade residente nesta zona da Califórnia.

Segundo dados oficiais, a população de origem portuguesa na Califórnia é de cerca de 345 mil pessoas, estimando-se que cerca de 70% seja oriunda dos Açores.

Nesta deslocação oficial, o presidente do Governo dos Açores será acompanhado pelo secretário regional com a tutela das Relações Externas, Rui Bettencourt, e por deputados do PS e do PSD à Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma dos Açores.

Estão ainda previstas no programa visitas às comunidades açorianas das cidades de Sacramento, Hilmar, Fresno, Artesia e San Diego.
