A group of Ribeira Grandenses from New England will participate with about thirty other local groups in the 25th anniversary of Cantar às Estrelas (Singing to the Stars), in Ribeira Grande, São Miguel. The event takes place on Friday, February 1, 2019, and starts at 7 pm. The groups will travel along Rua Direita, until they arrive at the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Estrela church, after passing Câmara Municipal of Ribeira Grande building.

This year there is an increase in the participation of children and youth in this event. Organizers expect about two thousand people of all ages to sing along Rua Direita and are delighted to see the Cantar às Estrelas tradition continue from generation to generation.

The Cantar às Estrelas tradition is considered the last “mijinha” of the year and the groups that participate in the Cantar às Estrelas parade will also sing in private homes and in local businesses. This year, once again, there will be more than three dozen individuals, cafes and local shops opening their doors to this tradition.

One of the highlights of this year’s feast is the presence of a group from the United States of America, the Friends of Ribeira Grande of New England, composed of about thirty members who will, for the first time, relive this tradition in their native land.

This year the Cantar às Estrelas parade has more events of interest. Among them was the launch of a book “Cidade das Estrelas” (City of Stars) by António Pedro Costa took place on Wednesday, January 30 at the Ribeiragrandense Theatre, with a presentation by João Bosco Mota Amaral.

On Thursday, January 31st, at 8:30 pm, a serenade will be given to Nossa Senhora da Estrela, with the presence of fado singer Miguel Bandeirinha, who will perform at the Audience newspaper gala on Saturday, February 2nd. The delegation comprises of about one hundred people and is led by the mayor of Câmara Municipal de Gaia, Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues.

Since 1994, on a proposal by the councilor Francisco Xavier Araújo Rodrigues, the local authority has taken charge of organizing the feast. This year celebrates 25 years of Cantar às Estrelas in Ribeira Grande.

Nossa Senhora da Estrela is the mother feast of the parish and closes the Christmas cycle that opens on December 8 with Our Lady of the Conception. As early as the sixteenth century there are records that the Ribeira Grande Town Hall paid the religious expenses of the church like the wax, musicians and preachers.

In ending, the feast of the Estrela, the Estrelas or the Nossa Senhora da Estrela, is a community feast, with a tradition in Matriz parish which gathers groups of people who, during the night, visit friends and neighbors houses and ends with praising the Matriz church’s patroness.

Grupo de Amigos da Ribeira Grande da Nova Inglaterra Participa no 25º Cantar às Estrelas

Um grupo de Ribeira Grandenses da Nova Inglaterra participam com cerca de trinta grupos Locais nos 25 anos do Cantar às Estrelas, na Ribeira Grande, evento que se realiza no próximo dia 1 de fevereiro, sexta-feira, a partir das 19.00 horas, percorrendo toda a rua Direita até à chegada a igreja Matriz, passando pelo edifício dos Paços do Concelho.

Este ano o evento conta com a presença de cerca de duas mil pessoas de todas as idades que vão cantar ao longo da rua Direita, registando-se uma crescente adesão por parte de crianças e jovens, o que permite transmitir os valores do Cantar às Estrelas de geração em geração.

O realce deste ano vai para a presença de um grupo oriundo dos Estados Unidos da América, mais concretamente o Grupo de Amigos da Ribeira Grande da Nova Inglaterra, composto por cerca de trinta elementos que pela primeira vez vão reviver esta tradição na sua terra de origem.

O desfile do Cantar às Estrelas é um dos pontos altos da festa, que este ano conta com mais motivos de interesse. Desde logo, o lançamento do livro “Cidade das Estrelas”, de António Pedro Costa, a ter lugar às 20.30 horas do dia 30 de janeiro, no Teatro Ribeiragrandense, com apresentação de João Bosco Mota Amaral.

No dia 31, às 20.30 horas, terá lugar uma serenata a Nossa Senhora da Estrela, com a presença do fadista Miguel Bandeirinha que, no sábado, estará presente na gala do jornal Audiência. A comitiva engloba cerca de cem pessoas e é liderada pelo presidente da Câmara Municipal de Gaia, Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues.

Desde 1994, sob proposta do vereador Francisco Xavier Araújo Rodrigues, a autarquia tomou a seu cargo organizar a parte exterior e profana da festa. Este ano celebram-se, portanto, os 25 anos do Cantar às Estrelas na Ribeira Grande.

Recorde-se que a festa em honra a Nossa Senhora da Estrela é a festa mãe da freguesia de Matriz e encerra o ciclo natalício que se abre a 8 de dezembro com Nossa Senhora da Conceição. Já no século XVI existem registos de que a Câmara Municipal da Ribeira Grande arcava com as despesas religiosas da igreja quanto a cera, músicos e pregadores.

No fundo, a festa da Estrela, das Estrelas ou de Nossa Senhora da Estrela, é uma festa de uma comunidade com tradição na Ribeira Grande, que junta grupos ou ranchos informais de gente que durante a noite vão de casa em casa de amigos e conhecidos, finalizando com louvores à padroeira na igreja Matriz.
