Washington, Jan 14 (Lusa) – The Terras Sem Sombra festival began Sunday with a presentation visit to the United States, the guest country of this year’s edition, with the goal of creating political and economic synergies through culture.

The delegation, which is visiting the United States until Wednesday, includes organizers of the festival Terras Sem Sombra, the Group of Singers of Aldeia Nova de São Bento, local councilors of Alentejo municipalities and representatives of some Portuguese companies, traveling to create connections with potential US partners.

José António Falcão, director general of Terras Sem Sombra, told reporters that the purpose of the visit is to “internationalize the Alentejo” as in previous editions, after extending the program to Brazil, Spain and Hungary.

The visit began with the Portuguese Community Center of Virgínia in Manassas where a lunch was held with the Portuguese community and the Portuguese Embassy in Washington.

The ambition, said José António Falcão, is to have Alentejo become known as “top destination for art, music, and nature” and as “a very cosmopolitan destination, which aligns with the vanguard of what creation is in international terms “.

In this sense, says the official, institutions such as city councils, companies, and community centers, which are next to the organization, “seek to give their best” for this territorial promotion of Alentejo.

The Terras Sem Sombra Festival begins on January 26 and runs through July, with programming in 11 municipalities in Alentejo and in two municipalities in Extremadura, with the United States as a guest country.

In this 15th edition, the theme of the festival is “On the Earth, on the Sea – Voyage and Travels in Music (Centuries XV-XXI)” and, in addition to music, includes promotion activities for tourism, environmental, business and of local politics.

Festival Terras Sem Sombra apresenta-se nos EUA com cultura, política e economia

Washington, 14 jan (Lusa) – O festival Terras Sem Sombra começou, no domingo, a visita de apresentação aos Estados Unidos, país convidado da edição deste ano, com o objetivo de criar sinergias políticas e económicas através da cultura.

A comitiva, que está de visita nos Estados Unidos até quarta-feira, inclui organizadores do festival Terras Sem Sombra, o Grupo de Cantadores da Aldeia Nova de São Bento, autarcas de municípios alentejanos e representantes de algumas empresas portuguesas, em deslocação para criar ligações com potenciais parceiros norte-americanos.

José António Falcão, diretor-geral do Terras Sem Sombra, disse aos jornalistas que o objetivo da visita é “internacionalizar o Alentejo”, tal como se tem feito em todas as edições, depois de estender a programação ao Brasil, Espanha e Hungria.

A visita começou pelo Centro Comunitário Português de Virgínia, na cidade de Manassas, onde se realizou um almoço com a comunidade portuguesa, contando também com a presença da Embaixada de Portugal em Washington.

A ambição, disse José António Falcão, é que o Alentejo se dê a conhecer como “um destino de arte, de música e de natureza de primeira ordem” e também como “destino muito cosmopolita, que alinha com a vanguarda daquilo que á a criação em termos internacionais”.

Neste sentido, diz o responsável, as instituições como câmaras municipais, empresas e centros comunitários, que estão ao lado da organização, “procuram dar o seu melhor” para esta promoção territorial do Alentejo.

O embaixador de Portugal nos Estados Unidos, Domingos Fezas Vital, disse que as reuniões que vão acontecer entre entidades portuguesas e norte-americanas foram marcadas para que cultura abra “uma porta económica e institucional”, mostrando que esta é “a diplomacia dos nossos tempos”, com múltiplas vertentes.

Hoje, os representantes das autarquias alentejanas vão ter um encontro na Prefeitura de Washington e uma reunião de trabalho sobre o conceito de ‘smart cities’: “o que são as cidades de hoje e no que estão a apostar nos Estados Unidos em termos de inovação”, disse o embaixador.

A Associação de Agricultores do Sul (ACOS), a Empresa de Desenvolvimento e Infraestruturas do Alqueva (EDIA), o Porto de Sines e a Adega Cooperativa da Vidigueira têm vários encontros ao longo do dia de hoje e terça-feira com associações e membros do Congresso.

Na terça-feira, os congressistas luso-americanos Jim Costa, Devin Nunes e Lori Trahan vão receber os presidentes das câmaras de Beja, Cuba, Ferreira do Alentejo, Serpa, Sines e Vidigueira, os representantes das empresas e membros da embaixada portuguesa nos EUA para conversações a nível de política local e regional.

Domingos Fezas Vital declarou que os encontros marcados não foram fáceis de conseguir, porque passaram pelo período de Natal, Ano Novo e ainda, atualmente, o ‘shutdown’ (encerramento parcial do governo norte-americano), que “afeta 25% da administração norte-americana e que desmobiliza as pessoas e não contribui para que se obtenham as respostas tão depressa quanto [se gostaria]”.

O almoço cultural, realizado no Centro Comunitário Português de Virgínia, contou com a atuação musical do Grupo de Cantadores da Aldeia Nova de São Bento.

O ensaiador, Pedro Mestre, disse que o coro trabalha sempre para “apresentar o Alentejo no seu melhor, (…) no seu todo” e preservar “o mais genuíno cante” – o cante alentejano – considerado Património Imaterial da Humanidade.

O Festival Terras Sem Sombra tem início no dia 26 de janeiro e estende-se até julho, com programação em 11 concelhos alentejanos e em dois municípios da Extremadura espanhola, tendo, nesta edição, os Estados Unidos como país convidado.

Nesta 15.ª edição, o tema do festival é “Sobre a Terra, sobre o Mar – Viagem e Viagens na Música (Séculos XV-XXI)” e, para além da música, inclui atividades de promoção turística, ambiental, empresarial e de política local.
