LOWELL – Democrat Lori Loureiro Trahan won the Massachusetts Congressional election last night, becoming first Massachusetts appointed Luso American and the first Luso American woman Representative to the US Congress.
“My grandparents, immigrants from Portugal, would be very proud tonight. My grandmother worked in the mills, my grandfather was a professional carpenter, they would not believe that two generations later her granddaughter would be the first Luso American to represent the US House of American Representatives.” Lori said, after thanking her family, campaign staff and supporters.
With the victory in the midterm elections on Tuesday, Lori has assured that Massachusetts’ 3rd district will continue to be represented by Democrats, as it has been for three and a half decades. “For the first time in the Commonwealth’s history in MA 3rd district has elected two women in a row to the US house of representatives,” said Niki Tsongas, who was elected in 2007, announced she would retire from public life to enjoy her children and grandchildren.
Trahan, who ran for the first time, won 61.9 percent of the votes, confirming her victory over Republican candidate Rick Green with 33.5 percent and independent candidate Mike Mullen with 4.5 percent.This was the only race in the state of Massachusetts for an open seat in Congress.
Lori’s victory celebration took place at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, in the city of Lowell, where her campaign staff and supporters enthusiastically awaited the results of an overwhelming victory.

Trahan took the stage around 10 pm after her opponent conceded. She said that the people of this district can count on her and it was a privilege to have received their votes. “In exchange for that vote, for that trust, I will fight for you, your families and your futures every single day,” Lori said.
Lori resides in Westford but was born and raised in Lowell, a city with a historic Portuguese community with Azorean roots and where she learned to fight for family values. This community now sees a Luso-descendant being elected for the first time to the United States Congress.
The elected congresswomen recalled that her father was a union ironworker and her mother cleaned houses. Both of her parents worked hard to provide for and educate their three daughters. During the campaign, Lori identified issues that affect working-class families and promised that she will go to Washington to work in defense of these families.
Lori vowed to uphold the Affordable Care Act and lower medications costs. She also wants to ensure that everyone has health insurance and is protected against diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and multiple sclerosis.
She promised to find real solutions to combat the opioid epidemic, protect the environment, advocate for gender equality, equal pay for women, better wages, as well as reform the immigration law to protect “Dreamers”, extend DACA, and ensure the path to American citizenship.
“If you live here, then I have your back. I’m in your corner. The fight of our lives is just beginning and it’s a great honor to get in the ring with you.” said Lori as she ended her speech.
In Massachusetts, four more Luso-Americans were elected.
For Massachusetts State House Senate, Marc Pacheco of Taunton and Michael Rodrigues of Westport (both of the 1st District of Plymouth and Bristol) were elected without opponents.
For the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, Tony Cabral, who has been in office for 28 years, was re-elected by the 13th District (Bristol), with a wide margin over independent Michael Janson.
Also, Tami Gouveia, granddaughter of Portuguese immigrants, was elected for the first time by the 14th District (Middlesex) with 64.4% of the votes for the Massachusetts State House of Representatives.

Com a vitória nas eleições intercalares de terça-feira, Lori garantiu que o 3.º distrito do Massachusetts continuará a ser representado pelos democratas, como tem vindo a acontecer há três décadas e meia, e pela primeira vez de forma consecutiva por duas mulheres, depois da atual congressista Niki Tsongas, eleita em 2007, ter anunciado não se candidatar por motivos de reforma .

A festa da eleição de Lori teve lugar no centro de conferências do hotel da Universidade Massachusetts na cidade de Lowell onde algumas centenas de apoiantes aguardavam com grande entusiasmo os resultados de uma vitória esmagadora.
A luso-americana subiu ao palco por volta das 10 da noite, após ser reconhecida como vencedora pelo seu opositor, para celebrar e dizer que as pessoas deste distrito podem contar com ela. Lori sublinhou ter sido um privilégio receber os votos deles. “Em troca desta votação, e pela vossa confiança, lutarei por vocês, pelas vossas famílias e pelo vosso futuro todos os dias.” disse.
Lori reside em Westford, mas nasceu e cresceu em Lowell, cidade com uma histórica comunidade portuguesa de raízes açorianas e onde Lori aprendeu a lutar pelos valores familiares. Comunidade essa que vê agora ser eleita pela primeira vez uma lusodescendente para o Congresso americano.
A congressista eleita lembrou que o seu pai foi um metalúrgico sindicalizado e que a mãe trabalhava nas limpezas, trabalhando ambos arduamente para manter e educar as três filhas. Durante a campanha, Lori identificou políticas que afetam as famílias da classe operária e prometeu que irá para Washington trabalhar em defesa dessas famílias.
Lori jurou defender o programa de seguro de saúde acessível (Affordable Care Act) e o preço baixo dos medicamentos. E garantiu ainda que pretende assegurar que todos tenham seguro de saúde e estejam protegidos contra doenças como a diabetes, cancro e esclerose múltipla.
Prometeu encontrar soluções reais para combater a epidemia de opioides, proteger o ambiente, defender a igualdade de género e a igualdade de salários para as mulheres, e uma melhor remuneração, assim como a reforma da lei de imigração, para que proteja os “Dreamers” [filhos de imigrantes ilegais chegados aos EUA em crianças e que receberam proteção legal na era Barack Obama, uma lei que o presidente Donald Trump suspendeu e pretende rever], prorrogue o DACA e que assegure o caminho para a cidadania americana.
Para o Senado estadual, Marc Pacheco de Taunton e Michael Rodrigues de Westport (ambos do 1º Distrito de Plymouth e Bristol) foram eleitos sem adversários.
Para a Câmara dos Representantes estadual, Tony Cabral, que está no cargo há 28 anos, foi mais uma vez eleito, pelo 13.º Distrito (Bristol), com grande margem sobre o independente Michael Janson.
Também para a Câmara dos Representantes estadual Tami Gouveia, neta de imigrantes portugueses, foi eleita pelo 14.º Distrito (Middlesex) com 64,4% dos votos.
