“Gostaria de agradecer à organização PPAO – Peabody Portuguese American Organizations – e a todos os que estão hoje aqui presentes. A comunidade portuguesa na área consular de Boston é muito ativa e tem muitas razões para celebrar o que foi realizado no mês de junho na Boston City Plaza quando recebemos o Presidente de Portugal. ”Disse o Cônsul Geral de Portugal em Boston, Dr. José Rui Caroço no seu discurso de encerramento na festa de despedida.
O almoço de despedida foi realizado no Clube Luís de Camões (CLC) e organizado pela Peabody Portuguese American Organizations (PPAO), uma aliança de organizações locais fundada há dois anos pelos clubes e associações portuguesas de Peabody quando a cidade celebrou o seu centenário.
O Cônsul Caroço, foi um dos responsáveis pela bem-sucedida visita do Presidente de Portugal às celebrações do Dia de Portugal em Boston, está agora a deixar o cargo, depois de 5 anos como Cônsul Geral, onde serviu a Comunidade Portuguesa e representou o Governo Português junto das autoridades Americanas.
Ele começou o seu mandato em Boston com a tarefa de mudar o escritório do consulado para um novo local. Essa transição ocorreu em 2015. Teve também um papel importante na promoção da cultura e da língua Portuguesas, trabalhando em estreita colaboração com o Sr. João Caixinha, Coordenador da Língua Portuguesa nos EUA, assim como a participação em muitos dos eventos das organizações portuguesas em todo o estado de Massachusetts. .
Em setembro, iniciará uma nova posição como chefe do Centro Norte-Sul do Conselho da Europa no seu escritório em Lisboa. Onde irá encontrar novos desafios na sua carreira e continuar a representar Portugal ao seu mais alto nível.
Serafim Romano e Robert Sousa foram os mestres de cerimônias e o almoço foi preparado por Fernando e Clara Santos e outros voluntários do clube Luís de Camões. Após o almoço, os palestrantes tiveram a oportunidade de relembrar os momentos que compartilharam com o cônsul durante o seu mandato.
O trabalho de Cônsul Caroço foi reconhecido pelos seus colegas, o cônsul da Espanha, Fernando Alvargonzález San Martín e a cônsul do Brasil, Embaixadora Glivânia Maria de Oliveira, que elogiaram o seu relacionamento e proximidade com a comunidade.
Mark F. Sullivan, diretor executivo da Câmara de Comércio Internacional de Massachusetts, leu uma proclamação enviada pelo governador Charlie Baker e destacou o profissionalismo do Cônsul Caroço na organização da recente visita do Presidente de Portugal a Massachusetts.
Proclamações foram lidas pelo Senador do Estado de Massachusetts, Joan Lovely e pelo Representante do estado de Massachusetts, Thomas Walsh, e pelos vereadores da cidade de Peabody James Moutsoulas e Thomas Gould.
O prefeito de Peabody, Edward A. Bettencourt Jr., mencionou o afeto mútuo entre o cônsul Caroço e a comunidade de Peabody e com um grande sorriso no rosto indicou o Dr. Caroço como cidadão honorário da cidade de Peabody.
Liliana de Sousa, do Boston Portuguese Festival (BPF), agradeceu ao Dr. Caroço todo o seu apoio e envolvimento incansável com o Festival. Liliana e outros membros do BPF presentearam-no com um bonito relógio de parede em reconhecimento da sua dedicação.
John Silva, presidente do PPAO, agradeceu a todos os que ajudaram a organizar o evento. E junto com outros membros do PPAO apresentaram ao Dr. Caroço e à sua esposa, Silvia, um buquê de bonitas flores e um globo de cristal.
Paulo Martins, Conselheiro das Comunidades Portuguesas na Nova Inglaterra, agradeceu e reconheceu a dedicação do Dr. Caroço às nossas comunidades e destacou o seu esforço para aumentar, o tão necessário, funcionários consulares de forma a melhorar o serviço à comunidade portuguesa.
A comunidade Portuguesa residente no estado de Massachusetts homenageou desta forma todo o empenho e dedicação prestados pelo Cônsul Geral de Portugal durante estes cinco anos que agora terminaram.
Sobre o Dr. José Caroço:
O Dr. José Rui Velez Caroço iniciou a sua carreira no Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros em 1991. Depois de trabalhar no Gabinete dos Negócios Estrangeiros em Lisboa, foi nomeado Diplomata Português na Embaixada de Portugal em Pretória, na África do Sul. Seguido pela Representação Permanente de Portugal junto da União Europeia (REPER) em Bruxelas, Bélgica. Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros em Lisboa e depois na Embaixada de Portugal em Brasília. Em 2013, foi nomeado Cônsul Geral no Consulado Geral de Portugal em Boston. Em setembro, iniciou a sua nova posição como chefe do Centro Norte-Sul do Conselho da Europa no seu escritório em Lisboa.

“I would like to thank PPAO – Peabody Portuguese American Organizations – and everyone who is present here today. The Portuguese community in the Boston Consular area is very active and has many reasons to celebrate what has been accomplished in the month of June at Boston City Plaza when we received the President of Portugal.” Said The Consul General of Portugal in Boston, Dr. José Rui Caroço in his closing remarks at his farewell party.
The farewell luncheon was held at Club Luis de Camões (CLC), and organized by the Peabody Portuguese American Organizations (PPAO) an alliance of local organizations founded two years ago by the Portuguese clubs and associations from Peabody when the city celebrated its centennial anniversary.
Consul Caroço, who was responsible for the successful visit of Portugal’s President at this year’s Day of Portugal celebration in Boston, is now leaving his position, after 5 years as Consul General, where he served the Portuguese Community and represented the Portuguese Government to the American authorities.
He started his term in Boston with the task of moving the consulate office to a new location. The move took place in 2015. He also had an important role promoting the Portuguese Culture and Language by working closely with Mr. João Caixinha, the Coordinator of the Portuguese Language in the USA, as well as participating in many events with Portuguese organizations throughout Massachusetts.
This September he will start his new position as head of the North-South Center of the Council of Europe at its office in Lisbon. Where he will encounter new ventures in his career and continue representing Portugal at its highest level.
Serafim Romano and Robert Sousa were the masters of ceremonies and the luncheon was prepared by Fernando and Clara Santos and other volunteers from the CLC club. Following the luncheon, speakers had the opportunity to reminisce about the moments they had shared with the consul during his term.
Consul Caroço’s work was recognized by his colleagues, the Consul of Spain, Mr. Fernando Alvargonzález San Martín and, the Consul of Brazil, Ambassador Glivânia Maria de Oliveira, both of whom praised his relationship and proximity with the community.
Mark F. Sullivan, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Office of International Trade, read a Proclamation from Governor Charlie Baker and highlighted Dr. Caroço’s professionalism in organizing the recent visit of the President of Portugal to Massachusetts.
Proclamations were read by Massachusetts State Senator, Joan Lovely and Massachusetts State Representative, Thomas Walsh, also by the Peabody city councils James Moutsoulas and Thomas Gould.
Mayor of Peabody, Edward A. Bettencourt Jr., mentioned the mutual affection between Consul Caroço and the Peabody community and with a big smile on his face nominated Dr. Caroço as an honorary citizen of the city of Peabody.
Liliana de Sousa, from the Boston Portuguese Festival (BPF), thanked Dr. Caroco for his support and tireless involvement with the Festival. Liliana and other BPF members presented him a beautiful wall clock in appreciation for his dedication.
John Silva, president of PPAO, thanked everyone who helped organize the event. He and the other PPAO members presented Dr. Caroço and his wife, Silvia, a bouquet of beautiful flowers and an engraved crystal globe.
Paulo Martins, Counselor for the Portuguese Communities in New England, thanked and acknowledged Dr. Caroço’s dedication to our communities and highlighted his efforts to increase, the much needed, consular staff in order to improve service to the Portuguese community.
The Portuguese community resident in the state of Massachusetts had honored this way, all the commitment and, dedicated work rendered by the Consul General of Portugal during these five years that have now ended.
About Dr. José Caroço:
Dr. José Rui Velez Caroço started his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991. After serving in the Foreign Affairs Office in Lisbon, he was appointed as Portuguese Diplomat at the Embassy of Portugal in Pretoria, South Africa. Followed by Portuguese Permanent Representation to the European Union (REPER) in Brussels, Belgium. Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lisbon and then at the Embassy of Portugal in Brasília, Brazil. In 2013, he was nominated as Consul General at the Consulate General of Portugal in Boston. This September he started his new position as head of the North-South Center of the Council of Europe at its office in Lisbon.
